7. Operating Instructions
The HANMATEK SF3 offers multiple detection modes. Always ensure the device is properly calibrated before each scan.
7.1 General Operation Steps
- Power On and Select Mode: Press the Power Button to turn on the tool. Press the Mode Button (Foreign Body Detection Button or Metal & Wires Detection Mode Button) to switch to the desired detection mode (Stud, Metal, or AC Wire).

Figure 5: Powering on and selecting a detection mode. - Scan the Surface: Place the scanner flat against the wall. Move the scanner slowly along the wall in a straight line. Do not lift the instrument or apply additional pressure during the scan.

Figure 6: Move the scanner slowly and steadily along the wall. - Interpret Results: The progress bar on the screen will change with the distance to the object. When the signal is full, the indicator light flashes, and a ticking sound is emitted, indicating that the center of the object has been found.

7.2 Stud Mode Detection (Foreign Body Detection)
This mode is used to find wooden studs behind drywall, plywood sheathing, barewood floors, and coated wood walls.
- Start with Stud Scan (Exact Mode) for detection up to 0.79 inch (20mm).
- If a stud is not found, long press the Foreign Body Detection Button to switch to Stud Scan (Deep Mode) for detection up to 1.50 inch (38mm).
- Warm Tip: To minimize false positives, always start your scan in Exact Mode first.

7.3 Metal Mode Detection
This mode detects both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
- The Metal Scan Mode can recognize non-ferrous metals (e.g., copper pipes) up to 0.79 inch (20mm).
- It can detect ferrous metals (e.g., rebar) up to 1.50 inch (38mm).
- Warm Tip: To minimize false positives, always start your scan in Exact Mode first.

7.4 AC Wire Detection
The SF3 is equipped to detect live, unshielded electrical wiring.
- AC Wire detection indicates the presence of live, unshielded electrical wiring up to 1.5 inch (38mm) deep.
- For safety, this wall scanner always detects and indicates Live AC Wires in all modes.
- When AC power is detected, the AC symbol flashes on the screen and makes a "beep beep beep" sound.
- The Wire Warning Detection Icon will flash when live, unshielded wires are detected.

7.5 Flashlight and Sound Control
- Flashlight: Short press the Flashlight & Sound Button to turn the flashlight on or off. This is useful for working in dimly lit areas.

Figure 11: The SF3 features a built-in flashlight. - Sound/Mute: Long press the Flashlight & Sound Button to switch between the audio alarm being on or muted. The sound will be turned on automatically when you restart the machine.

8. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe the device with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the device in its storage bag in a cool, dry place when not in use. Remove batteries if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.
- Battery Replacement: Replace batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display to ensure optimal performance.
9. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Inaccurate readings or false positives. | Improper calibration, device moved too quickly, or surface material interference. | Ensure the device is calibrated correctly by holding it flat against the wall in an empty area. Move the scanner slowly and steadily. Recalibrate if the device is shaken or lifted carelessly. |
| Device not turning on or low performance. | Low or dead batteries. | Replace with fresh 1.5V AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity. |
| No AC wire detection or inconsistent AC warning. | AC wires are shielded, too deep, or not live. | The device detects unshielded live AC wires. Ensure the circuit is live. Detection depth is up to 1.5 inches (38mm). |
| Edge icon not appearing. | Object is too small or too deep. | This is normal behavior for very small or deeply embedded objects. Continue scanning to locate the center. |

11. User Tips
- Slow and Steady Wins: Always move the scanner slowly and consistently across the surface for the most accurate readings. Rapid movements can lead to missed detections or false signals.
- Calibrate Frequently: If you lift the device from the wall or move it to a different section, it's good practice to recalibrate it by briefly pressing the mode button in an area free of known objects.
- Understand the Display: Pay attention to both the visual cues on the LCD screen (signal strength, center/edge indicators, AC warning icon) and the audio alerts.
- Double-Check Critical Areas: For critical drilling or cutting, scan the area multiple times from different directions to confirm the location of hidden objects.
- Battery Life: Keep spare batteries on hand, especially for larger projects, as detection accuracy can decrease with low battery power.
