4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Measurement Principle

The LS237 uses two primary measurement principles:

  • Ferrous (Fe) Substrates: Utilizes the Hall effect.
  • Non-Ferrous (NFe) / Aluminum (Al) Substrates: Utilizes the Eddy current principle.

4.2 Taking a Measurement

Place the Ruby probe tip firmly and perpendicularly onto the surface to be measured. The device will automatically detect the substrate type (Fe, Al, or non-metal) and display the coating thickness. The measurement interval is approximately 0.5 seconds.

4.3 Interpreting the Display

The 128x48 dot matrix LCD will show the measurement in micrometers (μm) or mils (mil). The screen and buttons will illuminate in one of three colors to indicate different thickness ranges or conditions, providing a quick visual cue.

4.4 Identifying Ferrous Putty

In Fe/Al mode, the LS237 can automatically identify ferrous putty. If putty is detected, the instrument will display a specific message, such as 'Ferrous putty!', along with the thickness reading, often accompanied by a red backlight indicator.

5. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the device in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Probe Care: Keep the Ruby probe tip clean and free from debris to ensure accurate measurements. Avoid dropping or impacting the probe.
  • Battery Care: For optimal battery life, avoid fully discharging the battery frequently. Charge the device regularly, especially if it will be stored for an extended period.

6. Troubleshooting

6.1 Device Not Powering On

  • Ensure the battery is sufficiently charged. Connect the device to a charger and wait for a few minutes before attempting to power on again.
  • Verify the power button is pressed and held correctly.

6.2 Inaccurate Readings

  • Ensure the probe tip is clean and free from any foreign material.
  • Make sure the probe is placed firmly and perpendicularly on the measurement surface.
  • Verify the surface is clean and dry.
  • Check if the minimum substrate thickness requirements are met (Fe: 0.2mm / Al: 0.05mm).

6.3 Bluetooth Connection Issues

  • Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on both the LS237 and your mobile device.
  • Make sure the LS237 is within range of your mobile device.
  • Restart both the LS237 and your mobile device, then try pairing again.
  • Ensure the mobile application is up to date.

6.4 Charging Indicator Behavior

If the charging indicator appears to be 'running' or inconsistent, it typically signifies that the device is actively charging. A steady indicator or a specific color change usually indicates a full charge. Refer to the device's display for battery status or consult the app for detailed battery information.
