Installing Accessories

1. Installing/Removing the Antenna

Screw the antenna clockwise into the connector on the top of the radio until it is secure. To remove, unscrew counter-clockwise.

2. Installing the Belt Clip

Align the grooves of the belt clip with those on the radio and push down until it clicks into place. To remove, use a flat-bladed object to press the tab and slide the clip upward.

3. Installing the Battery Pack

Ensure the radio is turned off before installing or removing the battery.

1. Align the battery pack parallel to the radio body, with its lower edge about 1-2cm below the radio's edge.
2. Slide the battery upward along the guide-rails until it clicks and locks into place.

Removing the Battery Pack

Press the battery release button above the battery pack and slide the battery downward.

4. Installing Additional Speaker/Microphone (Optional)

Pry open the rubber MIC-Headset jack cover and insert the Speaker/Microphone plug into the double jack.

Charging the Battery

The Li-ion battery pack is not fully charged at the factory. Charge it before first use. For optimal performance, fully charge and discharge the battery two or three times.

WARNING!

• Use only the specified charger. Other chargers may cause explosion or personal injury.
• Do not charge or replace the battery in locations with fuels, chemicals, or explosive materials.
• Do not charge a wet, deformed, leaking, or overheated battery.
• Do not charge in locations with strong radiation.
• Avoid overcharging, as it shortens battery life.

How to Charge (Base Charger)

1. Plug the AC adaptor into an AC outlet, then connect the adaptor cable to the DC jack on the charger. The indicator light will blink orange, indicating it's ready.
2. Place the battery or radio into the charger. Ensure good contact with charging terminals. The indicator light turns red.
3. A full charge takes approximately 2-5 hours. The light turns green when charging is complete.
4. If charging the radio while it's powered on, the indicator may not turn green. For proper indication, turn off the radio during charging.

LED Indicator Status

NOTE: "Trouble" indicates the battery is too warm, short-circuited, or the charger is short-circuited.

Using the Type-C USB Charger

The UV-K61 supports Type-C USB charging, offering convenient charging options.

1. Ensure your radio is turned OFF.
2. Plug the Type-C USB cable into the Type-C USB charging port on your battery. Connect the other end to a wall power outlet, power bank, or laptop.
3. An empty battery will fully charge in approximately 4 hours.
4. The battery meter on the LCD will indicate charging progress.

Note: It is recommended to power OFF your radio while charging. For optimal battery life, remove the radio from the charger within 6 hours and do not store it connected to the charger.

Operating Instructions

Basic Operations

1. Power On/Off

To turn on: Rotate the Volume/Power knob clockwise until you hear a "click". The display will show a message or flash, then display a frequency or channel. If voice prompt is enabled, it will announce "frequency mode" or "channel mode".

To turn off: Rotate the Volume/Power knob counter-clockwise until you hear a "click".

2. Adjusting the Volume

Rotate the Volume/Power knob clockwise to increase volume, counter-clockwise to decrease. Use the monitor function (key below PTT) to adjust volume using un-squelched static.

3. Main Band/Sub Band Select

In standby mode, press the [A/B] key to switch between the upper (A) and lower (B) displays. The selected display becomes the active listening and transmit frequency/channel. Press and hold [A/B] to quickly switch Double Wait/Signal Wait modes.

4. VFO/Channel Switch

Press the [V/M] key to switch between VFO (Frequency) and Channel (MR) display modes. In MR mode, the channel number is displayed. In VFO mode, 'VFO' is displayed. Press and hold [V/M] in MR mode to switch between frequency, channel, and name display modes.

5. Frequency (VFO) Mode

In VFO mode, use the ∧/∨ keys to navigate up/down the band according to the set frequency step. You can also input frequencies directly using the numeric keypad. The scanning and receive functions for aviation (AM 108-136MHz) and police (350-390MHz) bands are limited to VFO mode and manual input.

WARNING!

Transmitting on unauthorized frequencies is illegal. Always verify local regulations. Listening is generally permitted.

6. Channel (MR) Mode and Channel Selection

Channel (MR) mode is practical for everyday use with pre-programmed channels. VFO mode is useful for experimentation and programming. In MR mode, use the ∧/∨ keys or encoder to navigate channels, or input channel numbers directly via the keypad (e.g., [0][1][2] for channel 12).

7. Making a Call

• Channel mode call: Select a channel, then hold down the [PTT] key to transmit. Speak into the microphone. The red LED will be on.
• Frequency mode call: Press [V/M] to switch to frequency mode, input the desired frequency, then hold down the [PTT] key to transmit. The red LED will be on.
• Receive a call: Release the [PTT] key. The green LED will be on when receiving.

Note: For best reception, keep the microphone 2.5-5 cm from your mouth during transmission.

8. Using the Flashlight

Press the [SK1] key once to turn on the high-intensity LED flashlight (Always On mode). Press [SK1] again for Strobe Light (emergency signal). Press [SK1] a third time to turn it off.

9. Emergency Alert

Press and hold the [SK1] key for 3 seconds to activate. The radio will emit a loud siren and the flashlight will flash. Press [SK1] to exit. WARNING: Use only in actual emergencies.

10. FM Radio (FM)

The radio can receive FM frequencies from 65-108MHz.

1. In frequency or channel mode, press [SK2] to turn on the radio.
2. Select the desired frequency with the ∧/∨ keys or input it directly. Alternatively, press #Z to automatically search for a station.
3. Press [SK2] to exit FM radio.

Note: If an A/B receiving signal is detected while listening to FM, the radio will automatically switch to that frequency/channel for normal transmission/reception, then return to FM mode when the signal disappears.

11. Monitor

In standby, press and hold [SK2] to enter Monitor mode, allowing you to hear weak signals. Release [SK2] to exit. If no signal is present, it will emit noise.

12. Keypad Lock

To enable/disable the keypad lock, press and hold the * key for about two seconds. The radio can also be set to automatically lock the keypad after ten seconds via the menu.

13. Frequency Reversal

A short press of the * key enables the reverse function, swapping your transmit and receive frequencies. An "R" will appear on the LCD.

14. TX Repeaters Tone

Press [PTT] + [SK2] to send a 1750Hz repeater tone, useful for communicating through repeaters. This works even with keypad lock enabled.

15. One-Touch Frequency Search (Wireless Copy Frequency)

This feature allows you to quickly copy frequencies from another walkie talkie.

1. Press and hold the * key. The screen will display "SEARCH SWEEK...". The radio acts as a receiver.
2. Have the other walkie talkie transmit. If an effective frequency is received, it will be displayed along with any CTCSS or DCS values.
3. Press the [MENU] key to save the searched frequency and CTCSS/DCS to a channel.

Note: During frequency search, press the #Z key to switch between UHF or VHF bands.

16. NOAA Weather Radio/Scan Weather Channel

Your radio has a NOAA Weather Radio function to receive weather reports and scan 10 NOAA channels.

1. To turn on NOAA Weather Scan, press the [OSQL] key for 3 seconds. An icon will appear, and the radio will enter Weather band mode.
2. Press and hold the #Z key for 3 seconds to start automatic scanning of all 10 channels. Press and hold #Z again to stop scanning.
3. After stopping scan, you can manually select weather channels using the ∧/∨ key.
4. To exit Weather Radio broadcast mode, press [EXIT] or [PTT].

NOAA Weather Channel Frequencies

Note: These are Receive-only channels for NOAA and Canadian weather broadcasts. You cannot transmit on these channels.

Advanced Features

1. Working the Menu System

The radio's menu system allows customization of various settings. Each menu item has a numerical value for direct access.

Basic Use:

1. Press [MENU] to enter.
2. Use ∧/∨ keys to navigate.
3. Press [MENU] again to select an item.
4. Use ∧/∨ keys to select a parameter.
5. Press [MENU] to confirm and save, or [EXIT] to cancel.

2. Scanning

The radio features a built-in scanner for VHF and UHF bands. It scans in steps in VFO mode and channels in MR mode.

To enable: Press and hold #Z for about two seconds. Press and hold #Z again to exit.

Scanning Modes:

Configurable via Menu 19.

• Time Operation (TO): Scanner stops on a signal, then resumes after a preset time.
• Carrier Operation (CO): Scanner stops on a signal, then resumes when the signal disappears.
• Search Operation (SE): Scanner stops on a signal and remains stopped. Press #Z to resume.

Frequency Scanning:

In frequency mode, press #Z for more than 2 seconds to start. Use ∧/∨ keys to change direction. Press #Z to stop.

Channel Scanning:

In channel mode, press #Z for more than 2 seconds to start. Use ∧/∨ keys to change direction. Press #Z to stop.

Scan CTCSS/DCS:

In standby, press [MENU] [1][6] for CTCSS or [MENU] [1][7] for DCS. Press [MENU] to start scanning. This function works only in VFO mode when a signal is detected.

3. Manual Programming (Channels Memory)

The radio has 999 memory channels to store frequencies, transmit power, signaling info, bandwidth, ANI/PTT-ID settings, and a 6-character alphanumeric identifier.

Example: Programming a Channel Repeater Offset with CTCSS Tone

To program a new memory in Channel 10 with RX = 432.55000 MHz, TX = 437.55000 MHz (+5 Offset), and TX CTCSS tone 123.0:

1. Press [EXIT] to switch menus.
2. Press [V/M] to set the radio to VFO mode.
3. [MENU] [1][4] [MENU] [1][0] [MENU] [EXIT] (Deletes prior data in Channel 10)
4. [MENU] [0][5] [MENU] 123.0 [MENU] [EXIT] (Selects desired TX encode tone)
5. Enter RX frequency (e.g., 43255000).
6. [MENU] [1][3] [MENU] [1][0] [MENU] [EXIT] (Enters desired channel 10, RX added)
7. Enter TX frequency (e.g., 43755000).
8. [MENU] [1][3] [MENU] [1][0] [MENU] [EXIT] (Enters same channel 10, TX added)
9. Press [V/M] to return to MR mode.

Example: Programming a Simplex Channel with CTCSS Tone

To program a new memory in Channel 10 with RX = 432.6625 MHz and TX CTCSS tone 123.0:

1. Press [EXIT] to switch menus.
2. Press [V/M] to set the radio to VFO mode.
3. [MENU] [1][4] [MENU] [1][0] [MENU] [EXIT] (Deletes prior data in Channel 10)
4. [MENU] [0][5] [MENU] 123.0 [MENU] [EXIT] (Selects desired TX encode tone)
5. Enter RX frequency (e.g., 43266250).
6. [MENU] [1][3] [MENU] [1][0] [MENU] [EXIT] (Enters desired channel 10, RX added)
7. Press [V/M] to return to MR mode.

4. Repeaters Programming

To program repeaters, you need to know the transmit and receive frequencies and have authorization.

1. Press [V/M] to set the radio to VFO mode.
2. Use the numeric keypad to enter the repeater's output (receiving) frequency.
3. Press [MENU].
4. Enter [1][2] for frequency offset. Press [MENU].
5. Enter the specified frequency offset (refer to "12 OFFSET - Frequency shift amount" in Appendix C). Press [MENU] to confirm.
6. Enter [1][1] for offset direction. Press [MENU].
7. Use ∧/∨ keys to select + (positive) or - (negative) offset. Press [MENU] to confirm.
8. (Optional) Save to memory and set up CTCSS (refer to "Manual programming" and "CTCSS" sections).
9. Press [EXIT] to exit.

5. VOX (Voice Activated Transmit)

1. In standby, press [MENU] + 25. Screen displays "VOX Switch". Press [MENU].

6. Dual Watch

Dual Watch allows monitoring two channels simultaneously.

7. Stopwatch Timer

In standby, press [MENU] + 57. Screen displays "STOP WATCH". Press [MENU] to start/restart counting. Stop counting, then press [EXIT] to exit.

8. DTMF (Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency)

DTMF is used for automation and remote control in two-way radio systems, often for activating repeaters.

DTMF Frequencies and Corresponding Codes:

To send DTMF codes, press the corresponding key(s) while holding down the PTT key. This works even with keypad lock enabled.
