5. Setup

5.1 Choosing Your Sensor Version

The MTD085 sensor is available in two versions: WiFi and Zigbee. Ensure you have the correct version for your smart home ecosystem.

  • WiFi Version: Connects directly to your 2.4GHz WiFi network. No additional hub is required.
  • Zigbee Version: Requires a Tuya Zigbee Hub (gateway) to operate. The Zigbee hub acts as a central bridge for all your Tuya Zigbee smart devices.

Note: The Zigbee version will NOT work on Home Assistant directly without specific integration. If you do not have a Zigbee bridge, please purchase the WiFi type.

5.2 Physical Installation

The sensor offers flexible installation options:

  • No Holder Version: The sensor has a magnetic attraction function, allowing it to directly attach to iron surfaces (e.g., table corners, metal frames). Alternatively, use double-sided tape to secure it to any desired position.
  • Version with Bracket: The sensor magnetically attaches to the provided bracket. The bracket can then be bonded to a wall or ceiling using double-sided tape. The bracket allows for angle adjustment to optimize detection.

The back of the sensor contains a magnet, and the bracket is metal, enabling the magnetic attachment.

5.3 App Integration (Tuya Smart Life)

  1. Download the Tuya Smart Life app from your smartphone's app store (iOS or Android).
  2. Register or log in to your Tuya Smart Life account.
  3. Plug in the sensor using the USB Type-C cable and a 5V 1A power adapter. The sensor should be constantly powered.
  4. Open the Tuya Smart Life app and tap '+' to add a new device.
  5. Follow the in-app instructions to pair your sensor. For Zigbee versions, ensure your Tuya Zigbee Hub is already set up and connected.
  6. Once paired, you can rename the device and assign it to a room.

5.4 Zigbee2MQTT Integration (Advanced Users)

For advanced users who wish to integrate the Zigbee version of this sensor with Zigbee2MQTT, a specific JS file is required. This file helps in proper communication and functionality.

Download the JS file from: https://github.com/ExcelluxZ2MZHA/Excellux-ZigBee2mqtt

Please note that this is an advanced setup and requires familiarity with Zigbee2MQTT configurations.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Detection Capabilities

The MTD085 sensor utilizes millimeter wave radar to provide highly accurate human presence detection, distinguishing between various states:

  • Human Motion Detection: Detects active movement within its range.
  • Human Static Detection: Identifies the presence of a stationary person.
  • Human Micro Motion Detection: Capable of detecting subtle movements, such as typing or slight shifts in posture.
  • Breathing and Heartbeat Detection: Even detects the presence of a sleeping person by sensing breathing and heartbeat.

6.2 Luminance Detection

The integrated illuminance sensor measures ambient light levels (0-9999.9 LUX). This feature allows for smart scene linkage, such as automatically turning lights ON/OFF based on room brightness, protecting your eyes and saving energy.

6.3 Distance Detection

The sensor can detect presence within a configurable distance range of 1 to 10 meters. This allows you to define specific detection zones and avoid unnecessary triggers.

6.4 App Remote Control and Smart Linkage

The Tuya Smart Life app provides a comprehensive interface for controlling and monitoring your sensor. You can view real-time status, adjust parameters, and set up automation scenarios.

  • Real-time Monitoring: View current presence status, luminance levels, and distance detection.
  • Automation Scenarios: Create rules to link the sensor with other smart devices (e.g., turn on AC when presence is detected, activate security alarms).
  • History Record: Review past detection events and data logs within the app.

7. Adjustable Parameters

The sensor offers precise parameter settings via the Tuya Smart Life app to customize its behavior. Understanding these parameters is key to optimal performance:

  • Detection Shield: The closest detectable distance for a target.
  • Detection Range: The farthest detectable distance for a target.
  • Trigger Distance: The distance at which the sensor is triggered from an 'unoccupied' state to an 'occupied' state.
  • Maintain Sensitivity: The sensitivity level for continuous detection of targets when already in an 'occupied' state.
  • Trigger Sensitivity: The sensitivity level for triggering the sensor from an 'unoccupied' state.
  • Departure Delay: The time delay before reporting an 'unoccupied' state after a target disappears from the detection zone.
  • Entry Filter Time: The time required to confirm and report an 'occupied' state after a target is initially detected.
  • Block Time: After transitioning from an 'occupied' to an 'unoccupied' state, the sensor will not detect targets during this lockout period.
  • Status Indication: Controls the sensor's indicator light.
  • Sensor: Displays the sensor's operational status.
  • Range Report Mode: Configures how target distance information is reported. Setting it to "report at trigger" can reduce reporting logs and network congestion for Zigbee networks.

8. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Gently wipe the sensor's surface with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Firmware Updates: Periodically check the Tuya Smart Life app for available firmware updates to ensure optimal performance and access to new features.
  • Power Supply: Ensure a stable 5V 1A USB power supply is continuously connected for uninterrupted operation.

9. Troubleshooting

  • Sensor Not Detecting Presence:
    • Ensure the sensor is powered on and connected to the network.
    • Check the detection range and sensitivity settings in the app. Adjust if necessary.
    • Verify the sensor's placement. Obstructions or incorrect mounting height can affect detection.
    • Use the 'Debug Mode' in the app to find the most suitable detection distance and eliminate interference.
  • Connectivity Issues (WiFi):
    • Ensure your WiFi network is 2.4GHz. The sensor does not support 5GHz networks.
    • Check your router's signal strength at the sensor's location.
    • Restart your router and the sensor.
  • Connectivity Issues (Zigbee):
    • Ensure your Tuya Zigbee Hub is powered on and connected to your network.
    • Verify the sensor is within range of the Zigbee hub.
    • Check for potential Zigbee network congestion. Using 'report at trigger' mode can help.
  • Sensor Not Working with Home Assistant:
    • This product is not designed to work directly with Home Assistant. For Zigbee2MQTT integration, refer to Section 5.4.

10. User Tips

  • Optimal Placement: Experiment with different mounting heights and angles to achieve the best detection coverage for your specific room layout. Consider placing it where it has a clear line of sight to the primary area of activity.
  • Fine-tuning Parameters: Take the time to adjust the 'Detection Shield', 'Detection Range', and 'Sensitivity' settings in the app. Small adjustments can significantly improve accuracy and reduce false triggers.
  • Power Source: Always use a reliable 5V 1A USB power adapter to ensure consistent performance. The sensor is not battery-powered and requires continuous power.
  • Zigbee Network Health: If using the Zigbee version, ensure your Zigbee network is robust. A strong mesh network with multiple devices can improve reliability.

11. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
