4. Setup

Proper installation is crucial for the performance and longevity of your thruster. Ensure all connections are secure and waterproofed where necessary.

4.1 Mounting

  1. Choose a suitable location: Select a mounting point on your watercraft that allows for optimal thrust direction and clearance from obstacles.
  2. Secure the mounting bracket: Use appropriate fasteners (not included) to firmly attach the provided mounting bracket to your vessel. Ensure the bracket is stable and can withstand the forces generated by the thruster.
  3. Attach the thruster: Slide the thruster onto the mounting bracket and secure it using the designated screws or clamps. Verify that the thruster is aligned correctly and cannot rotate or detach during operation.

4.2 Electrical Connection

  1. Connect to ESC: Connect the thruster's 8AWG motor wires to a compatible Electronic Speed Controller (ESC). Ensure the ESC is rated for the thruster's peak current (200A) and voltage range (25.2-84V).
  2. Observe polarity: While brushless motors typically don't have strict polarity for initial connection, ensure consistent wiring for proper rotation direction. If the thruster spins in the wrong direction, swap any two of the three motor wires.
  3. Waterproof connections: For submerged applications, all electrical connections must be properly insulated and waterproofed using marine-grade heat shrink tubing, epoxy, or other suitable methods to maintain the IP68 rating.
  4. Battery connection: Connect the ESC to a battery pack within the specified voltage range (6-20S LiPo, 25.2-84V). Ensure the battery can supply the required peak current.

5. Operating Instructions

Before operating the thruster, ensure all setup steps have been completed and verified. Always perform a safety check before deploying your watercraft.

  1. Pre-operation check: Inspect the thruster for any visible damage, ensure the propeller is clear of debris, and all electrical connections are secure and dry.
  2. Power on: Connect the battery to the ESC. The ESC should initialize with a series of beeps.
  3. Control: Use your remote control or control system to gradually increase throttle. Observe the thruster's response and ensure smooth operation.
  4. Monitoring: During operation, monitor the thruster and ESC for any unusual noises, vibrations, or excessive heat.
  5. Post-operation: After use, disconnect the battery from the ESC. Rinse the thruster with fresh water, especially after saltwater use, to prevent corrosion.

6. Maintenance

Regular maintenance will extend the life and ensure optimal performance of your Flipsky thruster.

  • Cleaning: After each use, especially in saltwater, thoroughly rinse the thruster with fresh water to remove salt, sand, and other debris.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the propeller for damage (chips, cracks) and ensure it spins freely. Check the motor housing for any signs of leaks or damage.
  • Cable integrity: Examine all cables and connectors for fraying, cuts, or corrosion. Replace damaged components immediately.
  • Storage: Store the thruster in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and corrosive materials.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your thruster, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Thruster does not spinNo power, loose connection, faulty ESC/motorCheck battery, ESC, and all wiring connections. Test components individually if possible.
Thruster spins but no thrustPropeller damaged or obstructedInspect propeller for damage or debris. Clear any obstructions.
Excessive vibration or noiseDamaged propeller, bent shaft, loose mountingCheck propeller balance and integrity. Ensure thruster is securely mounted.
Motor overheatingOverload, insufficient cooling, faulty ESCReduce load, ensure proper water flow for cooling. Check ESC settings.
Water ingressDamaged seals, improper waterproofing of connectionsImmediately cease operation. Inspect seals and waterproofed connections. Repair or replace as needed.

8. User Tips

  • Saltwater Use: While the thruster is waterproof (IP68), prolonged exposure to saltwater requires thorough rinsing with fresh water after each use to prevent corrosion and salt buildup.
  • Voltage Compatibility: The thruster operates within a wide voltage range of 25.2V to 84V (6S to 20S LiPo). Ensure your battery and ESC are compatible with this range.
  • Mounting: The thruster is designed to be mounted with an included bracket, suitable for various applications like SUPs, ROVs, and boats. Ensure the mount is robust for your specific application.
  • Performance: The actual speed and performance on a vessel (e.g., a 300kg boat) will depend on many factors including hull design, propeller efficiency, battery capacity, and ESC settings.

9. Warranty and Support

The warranty period for consumable electronic products (e.g., ESC/Motor/Battery) is generally 2 months since the 7th day after shipment (the shipping date is checked by logistic record). For non-electronic products, the warranty period is 2 months since the 7th day after shipment (the shipping date is checked by logistic record).

You can return items to us for free repair or replacement when we get it and analyzed it as a manufacturing failure. We will bear the return back to you shipping cost only.
