5. Setup

5.1 Headgear Adjustment

Proper headgear adjustment is crucial for comfort and stability. Follow these steps:

  1. Adjust Headgear Diameter: Use the twist knob on the back of the headgear. Push the knob in to unlock, then twist clockwise to tighten or counter-clockwise to loosen.
  2. Adjust Height: Snap the pin into the appropriate hole to lock the headgear securely in place on your head.
  3. Adjust Viewing Angle: Loosen the knob on both sides of the helmet and change the angle locker to the desired tilt position (five selections available). Once the desired angle is achieved, tighten the knobs until snug. The helmet should still swing up but not drift downward when in place for welding.
  4. Adjust Distance to Face: Loosen the knobs on both sides of the helmet until the headband can move back and forth freely. Reposition the headband at one of the three available slots. This should be done one side at a time, ensuring both sides are located at the same position for proper auto-darkening filter operation.

5.2 Battery Installation/Check

The helmet is powered by a solar cell and two replaceable CR2450 Lithium Batteries. The batteries are typically pre-installed. Ensure the batteries are correctly seated and functional. The solar panel assists in powering the helmet and extending battery life.

5.3 Protective Lens Installation

Ensure both the internal and external protective lenses are clean and securely installed. These lenses protect the auto-darkening filter from scratches and spatter.

6. Operating Instructions

The helmet features digital controls for precise adjustment of welding parameters.

6.1 Control Panel Overview

Digital control panel of the welding helmet
Close-up of the helmet's digital control panel, showing buttons for Sensitivity, Shade, Delay, Mode, and ON/OFF.
  • ON/OFF Switch: Powers the helmet on or off.
  • MODE Button: Cycles through different operating modes: Grind, Weld, Cut.
  • SHADE Button: Adjusts the dark state shade level.
  • SENSITIVITY Button: Adjusts the sensitivity of the arc sensors (5 grades available).
  • DELAY Button: Adjusts the time it takes for the filter to return from dark to light state.
  • LOW BATT Indicator: Illuminates when batteries are low and need replacement.

6.2 Operating Modes and Adjustments

Select the appropriate mode and adjust settings based on your welding task:

  • Grind Mode: Set to Shade 4. The filter remains in a light state, suitable for grinding operations.
  • Cut Mode: Shade range 5-8. Suitable for plasma cutting and similar applications.
  • Weld Mode: Shade range 9-13. Suitable for TIG, MIG, and ARC welding.

Delay Time: Adjustable from 0.1 to 1.0 seconds. A shorter delay is suitable for tack welding, while a longer delay is better for high amperage welding to prevent eye fatigue from afterglow.

Sensitivity: Adjustable from low to high (5 grades). Adjust sensitivity to prevent false triggering from ambient light or to ensure proper darkening in low-amperage TIG welding.

6.3 LED Light (Optional Feature)

Some models (e.g., ADL-MA900VL-AE) may include an integrated LED light. This feature helps welders view the workpiece more clearly in dark conditions without needing to lift the helmet or rely on external lighting.

The integrated LED light illuminates the workpiece, eliminating the need for additional lighting or assistance in dark environments.

7. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and proper functioning of your welding helmet.

  • Cleaning: Clean the helmet shell with a mild soap and water solution. Do not use harsh solvents. Clean the protective lenses and ADF with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid abrasive materials that could scratch the surfaces.
  • Battery Replacement: When the LOW BATT indicator illuminates, replace the two CR2450 lithium batteries. Ensure correct polarity.
  • Storage: Store the helmet in a clean, dry place within the specified storage temperature range (-20°C to +70°C). Use the provided convenient bag for protection.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect the headgear, lenses, and helmet shell for any signs of wear, cracks, or damage. Replace any damaged components immediately.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your welding helmet, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • Helmet does not darken:
    • Check if the helmet is turned ON.
    • Ensure the batteries are not depleted; replace if necessary.
    • Clean the arc sensors to ensure they are free from obstructions.
    • Adjust sensitivity settings.
  • Poor visibility through the filter:
    • Clean the internal and external protective lenses and the ADF.
    • Ensure the protective lenses are not scratched or damaged; replace if needed.
    • Verify the shade setting is appropriate for the welding process.
  • Helmet darkens intermittently or falsely triggers:
    • Adjust sensitivity to a lower setting.
    • Ensure no bright ambient light sources are directly hitting the arc sensors.
    • Clean the arc sensors.
  • Helmet is uncomfortable or unstable:
    • Re-adjust the headgear according to the instructions in Section 5.1.
    • Ensure all headgear components are securely fastened.

If problems persist after troubleshooting, contact customer support.

10. User Tips

  • Test Before Use: Always perform a quick test before starting to weld. Strike an arc briefly and ensure the helmet darkens instantly and correctly.
  • Optimal Sensitivity: Adjust the sensitivity to the lowest setting that reliably triggers the auto-darkening function for your specific welding environment to avoid false triggers.
  • Delay for Comfort: For prolonged welding or high amperage, a longer delay setting can reduce eye strain from the bright afterglow of the weld puddle.
  • Grind Mode Caution: Remember to switch to Grind mode when grinding to prevent the filter from darkening. Always switch back to Weld or Cut mode before striking an arc.
  • Cleanliness is Key: Keep the lenses and sensors clean. Even a small smudge can affect performance and visibility.
