1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and effective use of your OWON Digital Oscilloscope Probes. These probes are designed for use with compatible digital oscilloscopes, such as the OWON XDS and HDS200 series, to accurately measure electrical signals. Please read this manual thoroughly before use.

2. Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions to prevent injury and damage to the equipment:

  • Do not exceed the maximum input voltage ratings specified for your probe model.
  • Ensure the probe's ground lead is properly connected to the circuit's ground before making any measurements.
  • Use only the accessories provided or approved by OWON.
  • Inspect the probe and cables for any damage before each use. Do not use damaged equipment.
  • Avoid touching exposed circuit components when the circuit is powered.
  • Always disconnect the probe from the circuit before disconnecting it from the oscilloscope.
  • The probes are designed for 'Electrical' DIY Supplies and are CE certified.

3. Package Contents

5. Setup and Connection

  1. Connect to Oscilloscope: Align the BNC connector of the probe with the input channel of your oscilloscope and twist clockwise to secure it.
  2. Attach Ground Lead: Connect the ground lead's alligator clip to the ground terminal of your circuit under test. Ensure a solid connection.
  3. Select Attenuation: Most OWON probes feature a 1X/10X attenuation switch. Set this switch to match the desired attenuation on your oscilloscope's input channel. For high voltage measurements, the P4100 probe offers 100X attenuation.
  4. Attach Probe Tip Accessories: Depending on your measurement needs, attach the probe hook tip for hands-free connection or use the protective cap for safety when not in use. Use color rings to identify different channels if using multiple probes.

6. Operation

Once connected, ensure your oscilloscope's channel settings (e.g., voltage scale, coupling) are appropriate for the signal you are measuring and match the probe's attenuation setting. Always perform probe compensation before making critical measurements.

Probe Compensation

Probe compensation ensures accurate signal reproduction on the oscilloscope screen. This procedure typically involves:

  1. Connect the probe to an oscilloscope channel and attach the probe tip to the oscilloscope's probe compensation output (usually a square wave signal).
  2. Set the probe to 10X attenuation.
  3. Adjust the compensation trimmer on the probe (using the provided adjustment tool) until a flat-top square wave is displayed on the oscilloscope.

Refer to your oscilloscope's user manual for specific instructions on probe compensation.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the probe. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. Ensure the probe is disconnected from all power sources before cleaning.
  • Storage: Store the probe in a clean, dry environment, away from extreme temperatures and humidity. Keep the protective cap on the probe tip when not in use.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the probe cable, connectors, and tip for any signs of wear or damage. Replace the probe if any damage is found.

8. Troubleshooting

  • No Signal on Screen: Check if the probe is securely connected to both the oscilloscope and the circuit. Verify the oscilloscope channel is enabled and set to the correct input.
  • Distorted Waveform: Perform probe compensation as described in Section 6. Ensure the attenuation setting on the probe matches the oscilloscope's channel setting. Check for damaged cables or connectors.
  • Excessive Noise: Ensure the ground lead is properly connected. Minimize loop area between the probe tip and ground lead. Check for external electromagnetic interference.

10. User Tips

  • For general-purpose measurements, the 10X attenuation setting is usually preferred as it reduces loading on the circuit and provides a wider voltage range.
  • Always ensure the probe's ground connection is as short as possible to minimize inductance and noise pickup.
  • When measuring high-frequency signals, use the shortest possible ground lead to maintain signal integrity.
  • Utilize the color rings to easily distinguish between multiple channels when performing multi-channel measurements.
