4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
The HP-36D meter requires one 9V battery (NEDA 1604 or 6F22 type) for operation. The battery is typically included.
- Ensure the meter is OFF by rotating the Function Switch to the "OFF" position.
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the meter.
- Use a screwdriver (if necessary) to open the battery compartment.
- Insert a new 9V battery, observing the correct polarity (+ and -).
- Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it.

5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Capacitance Measurement
- Ensure the capacitor to be measured is fully discharged before connecting it to the meter.
- Rotate the Function Switch to the desired capacitance range (e.g., 200pF, 2nF, 20nF, etc.). If the capacitance value is unknown, start with the highest range and work downwards until a stable reading is obtained.
- Press the "ZERO" button to clear any residual capacitance from the test leads. The display should show "000" or close to it.
- Connect the test leads to the terminals of the capacitor.
- Read the capacitance value directly from the LCD display.

5.2 Data Hold Function
To hold the current reading on the display, press the "HOLD" button. Press it again to release the hold and resume live measurements.
5.3 Backlight Function
In low-light conditions, press the backlight button (indicated by a light bulb icon) to illuminate the LCD display. Press it again to turn off the backlight.

6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
Wipe the meter with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Keep the input jacks free from dust and debris.
6.2 Battery Replacement
When the low battery indicator appears on the display, replace the 9V battery as described in Section 4.1. Remove the battery if the meter is not going to be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
6.3 Storage
Store the meter in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Keep it in its original packaging or a protective case when not in use.
7. Troubleshooting
- No Display: Check if the meter is turned ON. Verify battery installation and replace if necessary.
- Unstable Readings: Ensure the capacitor is fully discharged. Check test lead connections. Try a different measurement range.
- "OL" or Overload Indication: The measured capacitance exceeds the selected range. Switch to a higher range.
- Inaccurate Readings: Perform a zero adjustment before measurement. Ensure test leads are not damaged.
