6. Setup and Installation
6.1 Wiring Diagram
Proper wiring is crucial for the safe and correct operation of the device. This device is designed for a 3-phase, 4-wire system. Always ensure all phases are connected due to phase loss protection.

Figure 4: Application 1 - Wiring in a standard 3-phase 4-wire AC system (Grid to Load)

Figure 5: Application 2 - Wiring in an AC + PV (Solar) bi-directional metering system
6.2 Single-Phase Test Wiring
If you need to test the device in a single-phase system, follow the diagram below. Note: This configuration is for testing only and not for long-term operation.

Figure 6: Test Wiring in a Single Phase System. All input terminals N, L1, L2, L3 must be connected as shown. If one of the terminals is not connected, the device will not work, and WiFi pairing may fail due to open-phase protection.
6.3 App Installation and Device Pairing
- Download and Install App: Download the 'Tuya Smart' or 'Smart Life' app from your mobile app store (available for iOS and Android). Register an account if you don't have one.
- Power On and Enter Pairing Mode: Power on the protector. After a short delay countdown, the signal indicator will flash rapidly to indicate it's in pairing mode. If it doesn't enter pairing mode automatically, long-press the 'down' key for a few seconds until the WiFi signal indicator flashes rapidly.
- Add Device in App:

8. Maintenance
The SMTONOFF Smart Energy Meter is designed for minimal maintenance. Ensure the device is installed in a dry, well-ventilated area, free from excessive dust or moisture. Periodically check wiring connections for tightness and signs of wear. For cleaning, use a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents. If any issues arise, refer to the troubleshooting section or consult a qualified electrician.
9. Troubleshooting
- Device not powering on or WiFi pairing fails: Ensure all N, L1, L2, L3 input terminals are correctly connected. This device has phase loss protection, and incomplete connections will prevent operation. If the prepaid function is enabled, ensure sufficient energy balance.
- Device trips frequently due to leakage: If the protector trips 3 times due to leakage, it will not auto-reclose. You must identify and fix the underlying electrical fault causing the leakage before manually resetting the device.
- Prepaid function issues: If the device is not turning on due to the prepaid function, either disable the prepaid switch in the 'Expense' section of the Tuya Smart app or charge energy within the app. Remember the default password is 1234.
- Inaccurate readings: Verify that the wiring is correct and secure. Ensure the device is operating within its specified voltage and current ranges.
- No data in app: Check your WiFi connection and ensure the device is successfully paired with the Tuya Smart app.
10. User Tips
- For single-phase testing: While the device is primarily for three-phase, you can test it in a single-phase setup by connecting N+L1+L2+L3. Remember this is for testing only, not permanent use.
- Bi-directional energy monitoring: This meter is capable of measuring both energy consumed from the grid (positive active energy) and energy generated back to the grid (negative active energy), making it ideal for solar PV installations. The app provides detailed statistics for both.
- Hourly consumption data: The Tuya Smart app provides detailed electricity statistics, including hourly consumption, which can be useful for understanding energy usage patterns and optimizing tariffs.
- Security: Change the default password (1234) for the prepaid function and other sensitive settings in the app to enhance security.
