1. Introduction

The TASI TA650A Digital Sound Level Meter is an environmental sound level instrument designed for accurate measurement of sound levels. It is suitable for a wide range of applications, including factories, workshops, schools, residential areas, offices, traffic roads, and audio environments.

2. Key Features

  • Large Measurement Range: Capable of measuring sound levels from 30.0 to 130 dBA with an accuracy of ±1.5dB.
  • Maximum/Minimum Value Hold: Easily capture and display the maximum or minimum sound level recorded during a measurement session.
  • High Definition Large LCD Screen: Features a clear LCD screen with white backlight, ensuring readability even in low-light conditions.
  • Time Weighting Options: Switch between Fast (0.125s) and Slow (1s) time weighting to suit different measurement requirements.

  • Auto Power Off: Automatically powers off after 15 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery life (can be disabled).

3. Package Contents

4. Setup

4.1. Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the device.
  2. Slide or unclip the cover to open the compartment.
  3. Insert two (2) 1.5V AAA (R03/LR03) batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

4.2. Windshield Installation

Gently place the foam windshield over the microphone at the top of the device. This helps to reduce wind noise and improve measurement accuracy in outdoor environments.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Power On/Off

Press the Power button (red circle with a line) located on the front panel to turn the device on or off.

5.2. Taking Measurements

Once powered on, the device will immediately begin displaying sound level measurements in dBA. Hold the meter in the area where you wish to measure the sound level, ensuring the microphone is pointed towards the sound source.

5.3. MAX/MIN Value Hold

Press the MAX button to display the maximum sound level recorded since the device was powered on or the MAX function was activated. Press the MIN button to display the minimum sound level recorded. Press the respective button again to exit MAX/MIN mode.

5.4. Data Hold

Press the HOLD button to freeze the current reading on the display. Press it again to release the hold and resume live measurements.

5.5. Time Weighting (FAST/SLOW)

Press the F/S button to toggle between Fast (0.125s) and Slow (1s) time weighting. Fast weighting is suitable for capturing sudden noise peaks, while slow weighting provides a more averaged reading for stable noise levels.

5.6. Backlight

Press the Backlight button (light bulb icon) to turn the LCD backlight on or off for improved visibility in various lighting conditions.

5.7. Auto Power Off

The device is configured to automatically power off after 15 minutes of inactivity. This feature can be disabled if continuous operation is required (refer to advanced settings in the full user manual if available).

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the device. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: When not in use for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and store the device in a dry environment between -10℃ and 50℃ with maximum 70% relative humidity.
  • Microphone Care: Keep the microphone clean and free from dust or debris. Always use the windshield to protect the microphone.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Device does not power on: Check if the batteries are inserted correctly and have sufficient charge. Replace batteries if necessary.
  • Inaccurate readings: Ensure the microphone is clean and the windshield is properly installed. Avoid measuring in extremely windy conditions without proper shielding. Verify the device is within its specified operating environment.
  • Display is dim or blank: Check battery level. If the backlight is off, press the backlight button.

9. User Tips

  • For best accuracy, hold the meter steady and avoid obstructing the microphone.
  • When measuring intermittent noise, use the MAX hold function to capture the highest sound level.
  • Consider the environment: high humidity or extreme temperatures can affect measurement accuracy.
