Setup and Assembly (DIY Kit)
This product is a DIY kit requiring assembly. Basic soldering skills and familiarity with electronic components are recommended. Please follow these general steps. A more detailed, separate assembly guide may be included with your kit for specific component placement and soldering instructions.
- Unpack and Verify: Carefully unpack all components and compare them against the packing list and component layout diagram (Figure 2).
- Prepare Workspace: Ensure a clean, well-lit workspace with appropriate tools (soldering iron, solder, wire cutters, multimeter, small screwdrivers).
- Solder Components to PCB:
- Start with smaller components like resistors and diodes, paying attention to polarity where applicable.
- Proceed to capacitors, IC sockets (if provided, otherwise ICs directly), and other through-hole components.
- Ensure all solder joints are clean and strong.
- Install VFD Tubes: Carefully insert the IV-11 VFD tubes into their designated sockets on the PCB. Be gentle as tubes are fragile.
- Assemble Acrylic Case: Once the PCB is fully assembled and tested (if possible before final enclosure), mount the PCB into the acrylic case using the provided standoffs and screws. Ensure proper alignment of the tubes and any external connectors (e.g., power jack, remote sensor).
- Connect Power: Plug the DC 5V power adapter into the clock and then into a wall outlet.

General Functions:
- Power On/Off: Use the power button on the remote.
- Time Display: The clock displays time in either 12-hour or 24-hour format. This setting can be toggled via the remote.
- Date Display: View the current date, configurable for lunar or solar calendar display.
- Temperature Display: Shows ambient temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit.
- Alarm Clock: Set and manage alarms through the remote control interface.
- LED Backlight: The LED backlight under the tubes can be adjusted for color and intensity, offering various visual effects.
- Menu Navigation: Use the directional and 'OK' buttons on the remote to navigate through settings and options.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Gently wipe the acrylic case and VFD tubes with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Tube Handling: VFD tubes are delicate. Avoid touching them directly with bare hands to prevent smudges, and handle with care during assembly or if replacement is needed.
- Power Supply: Always use the provided DC 5V power adapter. Using an incorrect power supply can damage the device.
- Environment: Keep the clock in a dry environment, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity.
Troubleshooting
- No Display:
- Check if the power adapter is securely connected to both the clock and the power outlet.
- Ensure the power outlet is functional.
- Verify all soldered connections on the PCB, especially power-related circuits and tube connections.
- Confirm the VFD tubes are correctly seated in their sockets.
- Incorrect Time/Date:
- Use the remote control to access the settings menu and adjust the time and date.
- Ensure the clock chip (DS3231) is correctly installed and functioning.
- Remote Control Not Responding:
- Check the battery in the remote control and replace if necessary.
- Ensure there are no obstructions between the remote and the clock's IR receiver.
- Confirm the IR receiver on the clock's PCB is correctly installed and not damaged.
- Inconsistent Tube Brightness/Segments:
- Inspect the soldering of the affected tube's pins and associated driver ICs.
- Ensure the tube is fully inserted into its socket.
User Tips
- Soldering Practice: If you are new to soldering, consider practicing on scrap components or a practice board before assembling the VFD clock kit.
- Component Orientation: Always double-check the orientation of polarized components (diodes, electrolytic capacitors, ICs) before soldering to prevent damage.
- Gentle Handling: VFD tubes are glass and can be fragile. Handle them by their bases or leads, not the glass envelope, and avoid applying excessive force.
- Power Cycle: If the clock behaves unexpectedly, try disconnecting the power for a few seconds and then reconnecting it to perform a soft reset.
