  4. Close the battery compartment cover securely.

The device is now ready for use.

7. Operating Instructions

The SH402 features a 5-in-1 detection mode for various materials. The device uses upgraded internal sensors to detect changes in density behind the wall, providing accurate location of objects.

7.1 Power On/Off and Mode Selection

  1. Press the Power button / Mode switch button (labeled 'MODE' on the device, see Figure 2) to turn on the detector.
  2. Press the Power button / Mode switch button repeatedly to cycle through the different detection modes: Wood (1/2", 1", 1 1/2" Deep), Metal, and AC Live Wire. The selected mode will be indicated on the LCD screen.
  3. To turn off the device, press and hold the Power button / Mode switch button for a few seconds.

7.2 Calibration

Before each use, especially when changing detection modes or moving to a new location, it is recommended to calibrate the device:

  • Place the detector flat against the wall surface where you intend to scan.
  • Ensure there are no known studs, metal, or live wires in the immediate area during calibration.
  • Press and hold the scan button (if available, otherwise the device may auto-calibrate upon mode selection). The device will emit a beep and the display will show a stable reading when calibrated.

7.3 Scanning and Detection

Hold the detector flat against the wall and slowly slide it horizontally across the surface. The LCD screen will provide visual feedback, and an audible beep will sound when an object is detected.

  • Select the desired wood detection depth: 1/2 inch (12.7mm), 1 inch (25.4mm), or 1 1/2 inch (38mm).
  • Slowly move the detector across the wall. The display will show indicators for stud edges and center.
  • When the Stud Center Indicator (Figure 2, item 1) lights up and the device beeps, you have located the center of a wood stud.

Metal Detection

  • Select the Metal detection mode.
  • Scan the wall slowly. The device can detect metal up to 2.36 inches (60mm) deep.
  • The display will indicate the presence of metal, and an audible alarm will sound.

AC Live Wire Detection

  • Select the AC detection mode.
  • Scan the wall slowly. The device can detect live AC wires up to 2 inches (51mm) deep.
  • The AC Wire Warning indicator (Figure 2, item 2) will light up, and the device will beep when a live AC wire is detected.

8. Maintenance

8.1 Cleaning

  • Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Do not immerse the device in water.

8.2 Battery Replacement

When the battery indicator on the LCD screen shows low power, replace the 9V dry battery as described in Section 6.1. Remove the battery if the device will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.

9. Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Device does not turn on Dead or incorrectly installed battery Replace battery or check polarity.
Inaccurate readings Improper calibration, moisture in wall, or interference Recalibrate on a clear section of wall. Ensure wall is dry. Avoid scanning near large metal objects or strong electromagnetic fields.
No detection in AC mode Wires are not live, too deep, or shielded Ensure power is on for the circuit. AC detection depth is limited to 2 inches (51mm). Some shielded wires may not be detectable.
Device beeps constantly Calibrated over an object, or strong interference Move to a different spot on the wall and recalibrate.

10. User Tips

  • For best results, hold the detector firmly against the wall and move it slowly and steadily.
  • Mark the edges of detected objects with a pencil before drilling or cutting.
  • When detecting studs, scan the area multiple times from different directions to confirm the location.
  • Always double-check AC wire detection, especially before performing any work that involves cutting or drilling into walls.
