The CM86B requires 3 x 1.5V AAA batteries (not included). To install or replace batteries:
- Ensure the meter is turned OFF.
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the meter.
- Use a screwdriver to open the battery compartment cover.
- Insert three AAA batteries, observing the correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
- Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.
5.2 Connecting Test Leads and Thermocouple
For voltage, resistance, capacitance, diode, and continuity measurements, connect the test leads:
- Insert the black test lead into the 'COM' (Common) input socket.
- Insert the red test lead into the 'INPUT' socket.
For temperature measurements, connect the thermocouple:
- Insert the thermocouple plugs into the 'COM' and 'INPUT' sockets, observing polarity if specified by the thermocouple.
6. Operating Instructions
The CM86B features an auto-ranging function, simplifying operation by automatically selecting the appropriate measurement range.
6.1 Function Selection
Rotate the function selection knob to choose the desired measurement mode:
- AC/DC Current (1000A): For measuring current by clamping the jaws around a single conductor.
- AC/DC Voltage: For measuring voltage.
- Resistance (Ω): For measuring resistance.
- Capacitance (F): For measuring capacitance.
- Temperature (°C/°F): For measuring temperature using the thermocouple.
- Diode/Continuity/Hz: For diode testing, continuity checks, and frequency measurement.
- NCV/LIVE: For non-contact voltage detection and live wire identification.
- VFD/INRUSH: For Variable Frequency Drive measurement and Inrush current measurement.
6.2 Specific Measurement Functions
6.2.1 AC/DC Current Measurement
- Rotate the knob to the AC/DC current position.
- Open the clamp jaws and enclose a single conductor. Ensure the jaws are fully closed.
- Read the current value on the LCD.
- For DC current, if the reading is unstable or below 0.4A, the signal input on the screen may flicker. Readings ≥0.5A will be stable.
- To clear DC current readings to zero, long-press the 'ZERO' button. This function is specifically for DC current and helps compensate for magnetic field effects.

Figure 5: DC Current Zero Clearing function.
6.2.2 AC/DC Voltage Measurement
- Rotate the knob to the AC/DC voltage position.
- Connect the test leads to the circuit points where voltage is to be measured.
- Read the voltage value on the LCD.
- For Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) measurement, short press the 'VFD' key while in AC voltage gear.

Figure 6: AC Voltage Measurement with VFD function.
6.2.3 Resistance, Capacitance, Diode, Continuity Measurement
- Rotate the knob to the respective function position (Ω, F, Diode/Continuity).
- Connect the test leads to the component under test.
- Read the value on the LCD.
- For Diode/Continuity, use the 'SEL' button to switch between modes.

Figure 7: Various detailed measurement functions.
6.2.4 Temperature Measurement
- Rotate the knob to the temperature gear.
- Plug in the thermocouple into the 'COM' and 'INPUT' sockets.
- Place the thermocouple probe on or in the object whose temperature is to be measured.
- Press the 'SEL' button to switch between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F).

Figure 8: Contact temperature measurement.
6.2.5 NCV (Non-Contact Voltage) Measurement
- Rotate the knob to the 'NCV/LIVE' position.
- Bring the NCV sensor head close to the circuit or conductor under test.
- The meter will issue different alarm prompts (audible and visual) according to the voltage intensity detected.

Figure 9: NCV Non-Contact Voltage Measurement.
6.2.6 Live Firewire Recognition
- Rotate the knob to the 'NCV/LIVE' position.
- Insert the red test lead into the neutral wire port of an outlet or circuit.
- If a live wire is detected, the buzzer will sound an alarm.
- If it is a neutral wire or ground wire, there will be no response.

Figure 10: Live Firewire Recognition.
6.2.7 Inrush Current Measurement
- Set the function knob to the AC or DC current gear.
- Short press the 'INRUSH' button to enter inrush measurement mode.

7. Maintenance
7.1 Cleaning
Wipe the meter with a dry, soft cloth. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Keep the jaws clean and free of debris.
7.2 Battery Replacement
Refer to Section 5.1 for battery replacement instructions. Always use new 1.5V AAA batteries and dispose of old batteries responsibly.
7.3 Storage
If the meter is not used for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and damage. Store the meter in its cloth bag in a cool, dry place.
8. Troubleshooting
- Display shows 'OL' or '-OL': This indicates an over-range condition. The measured value exceeds the meter's maximum range for the selected function. Select a higher range if available, or ensure the measurement is within the meter's capabilities.
- No display or faint display: Check battery levels and replace if necessary. Ensure batteries are inserted with correct polarity.
- Inaccurate readings: Ensure test leads are properly connected. Check for external interference (e.g., strong magnetic fields). For DC current, use the ZERO clearing function.
- Meter does not turn on: Check battery installation and charge.
