1. Introduction

The Symcode MJ-Q30 is a portable and lightweight Bluetooth pet microchip reader designed for efficient identification of animals. It supports FDX-B (ISO11784/11785) and EMID microchips, making it suitable for a wide range of animal management applications, including pet identification, resource management, and railway inspection.

Its user-friendly design features an OLED display for clear readability, even in sunlight, and multiple connection methods for versatile data transfer.

3. Device Overview

Familiarize yourself with the main components and controls of your MJ-Q30 reader:

  • Scan Position: The area where microchips are detected.
  • TFT Display Screen: Shows menu options, scan results, and device status.
  • Scan Button: Initiates the scanning process.
  • Page Up/Down Buttons: Navigate through menu options and history records.
  • Type-C Interface: Used for charging and wired data transfer.

4. Setup and Charging

4.1. Initial Charge

Before first use, fully charge the device using the provided Type-C USB cable. Connect the cable to the Type-C interface on the reader and the other end to a standard USB power adapter (not included) or a computer USB port. The device has an 800mAh battery, providing up to 15 hours of continuous working time and 3 days of standby time.

4.2. Power On/Off

  • Power On: Press and hold the Scan button for a few seconds until the screen lights up.
  • Power Off: If no tags are scanned, the device will shut down automatically after 120 seconds. Alternatively, long-press the Scan button for 3 seconds to manually shut down the device.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Scanning Microchips

  1. Power on the device.
  2. Select "Scan" from the main menu using the Page Up/Down buttons and confirm with the Scan button.
  3. Hold the reader near the animal's microchip implant location. The device is highly sensitive and designed to pick up chips instantly.
  4. The reading distance is typically >15cm for 30mm ear tags and >5cm for 2*12mm glass tags.
  5. Once a microchip is detected, the ID will be displayed on the OLED screen.

5.2. Viewing History

The MJ-Q30 can save up to 240 labels for mass storage.

  1. From the main menu, select "View History" using the Page Up/Down buttons and confirm with the Scan button.
  2. Use the Page Up/Down buttons to scroll through previously scanned microchip IDs.

5.3. Clearing Records

  1. From the main menu, select "Clear Records" using the Page Up/Down buttons and confirm with the Scan button.
  2. Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm clearing all stored records.

5.4. Uploading Data

The device supports data transfer to a computer or mobile phone via Bluetooth, 2.4G wireless, or USB cable.

  1. Connect the device to your computer using one of the methods described in Section 6.
  2. From the main menu, select "Upload" using the Page Up/Down buttons and confirm with the Scan button.
  3. To transfer data to a PC, open a notepad window or a compatible application on your connected computer. The data will transfer instantly.

6. Connectivity

The MJ-Q30 offers multiple ways to connect to other devices:

  • USB Wired Connection: Connect the reader directly to your computer using the provided Type-C USB cable. This allows for charging and direct data transfer.
  • 2.4GHz Wireless Connection: Insert the 2.4G receiver into a USB port on your computer. The reader will automatically connect wirelessly for data transfer.
  • Bluetooth Wireless Connection: Pair the reader with a Bluetooth-enabled computer or mobile phone. Refer to your device's Bluetooth pairing instructions. Once paired, data can be transferred wirelessly.

The device is compatible with Windows, Mac OS, and Linux operating systems for data upload.

8. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the device. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the device in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Battery Care: To prolong battery life, avoid fully discharging the battery frequently. Charge the device regularly, even if not in use for extended periods.

9. Troubleshooting

  • Device not powering on: Ensure the battery is charged. Connect to a power source using the Type-C cable and try again.
  • Unable to read microchips:
    • Ensure the microchip is compatible (FDX-B, EMID). FDX-A protocol is not supported.
    • Hold the scanner closer to the microchip.
    • Check for any obstructions between the scanner and the microchip.
  • Data transfer issues:
    • For USB connection, ensure the cable is securely connected to both the reader and the computer.
    • For 2.4G wireless, ensure the receiver is properly inserted into a USB port and the reader is within range.
    • For Bluetooth, ensure the reader is paired with your device and Bluetooth is enabled on both devices.
    • Try restarting both the reader and the connected device.

10. User Tips

  • For optimal scanning, ensure the scan position is directly over the microchip.
  • Keep the device updated with the latest firmware (if available from the manufacturer) to ensure best performance and compatibility.
  • Regularly back up stored microchip data to prevent loss.
