1. Introduction

The Neoteck Coating Thickness Gauge is a precision instrument designed for non-destructively measuring the thickness of plated and coated sheets on various metal substrates. Utilizing principles of electro-magnetic induction and the eddy current effect, it automatically detects the attribute of the substrate, making it suitable for both ferrous (Fe) metals like steel and non-ferrous (NFe) metals like aluminum and copper.

This gauge is an essential tool for material surface treatment, widely used in manufacturing, metal-processing, chemical industries, and commodity inspection. It performs reliably in laboratories, workshops, and outdoor environments.

5. Setup

5.1 Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the device.
  2. Open the battery cover.
  3. Insert 2 x AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Close the battery cover securely.

5.2 Calibration

To ensure accurate measurements, it is recommended to calibrate the gauge before first use or if you suspect inaccurate readings.

  1. Long press and hold the 'CALIB/ZERO' button to enter calibration mode. The display will show a calibration indicator.
  2. Place the gauge probe firmly and flatly on the provided Iron Substrate (FE) for magnetic induction calibration.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to perform zero-point calibration.
  4. Repeat the process with the Aluminum Substrate (NFE) for eddy current calibration.
  5. For multi-point calibration, use the provided calibration films of varying thicknesses on the substrates as instructed by the device or manual.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Power On/Off

  • To Power On: Press the 'ON/OFF' key (power button) for more than 0.5 seconds.
  • To Power Off: Press and hold the 'ON/OFF' key until the screen blanks.
  • Automatic Shut-off: The gauge will automatically switch off after 5 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery. This feature can be disabled via the device's menu/setup if available (refer to on-screen options).

6.2 Taking Measurements

  1. Ensure the gauge is powered on and calibrated.
  2. Place the probe of the gauge quickly and smoothly, vertically and lightly against the part to be measured.
  3. The measurement will be displayed on the LCD screen. The gauge automatically detects the substrate type (Fe or NFe).

6.3 Measurement Modes (SNG/CON)

The gauge supports two measurement modes: Single Point (SNG) and Continuous (CON).

  • Single Point (SNG): Takes a single measurement each time the probe is applied to the surface.
  • Continuous (CON): Allows for continuous scanning of a surface, providing real-time readings as the probe is moved. This mode is useful for quickly assessing larger areas.

To switch between SNG and CON modes, press the 'MODE/RESET' button.

6.4 Unit Switching (µm/mils)

To switch between micrometers (µm) and mils (mil) units, press the 'um/mils' button (Up Key).

7. Maintenance

  • Battery Care: If the thickness gauge is to remain unused for a long period, remove the batteries and store them separately. This prevents potential damage from battery leakage or malfunction.
  • Storage: Always store the thickness gauge in its carrying pouch when not in use to protect it from dust, moisture, and physical damage.
  • Cleaning: Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Probe Protection: Ensure the probe tip is kept clean and free from debris to maintain measurement accuracy.

8. Troubleshooting

  • No Display/Device Not Turning On: Check if the batteries are correctly installed and have sufficient charge. Replace batteries if necessary.
  • Inaccurate Readings: Perform a calibration using the provided calibration plates and films. Ensure the probe is clean and applied flat against the surface. Verify the substrate material matches the gauge's capabilities (Fe/NFe).
  • Display Error: Try turning the device off and on again. If the error persists, remove and reinsert batteries.
  • Gauge Not Detecting Substrate: Ensure the substrate is a metal (ferrous or non-ferrous) and within the minimum thickness requirements (0.5mm for Fe, 0.3mm for NFe).

9. User Tips

  • When measuring car paint, take multiple readings across different panels and average them for a more reliable assessment of paint consistency.
  • For curved surfaces, utilize the V-Groove design of the probe to ensure stable contact and accurate readings.
  • Always ensure the measurement surface is clean and dry for optimal accuracy.
  • Keep the calibration films and substrates in good condition, as they are crucial for maintaining the accuracy of your gauge.
