5. Setup

5.1 Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the radio.
  2. Carefully remove the screws securing the battery cover.
  3. Before installing the batteries, ensure the surface of the rubber ring (seal) is clean and free of any particles to maintain waterproofing.
  4. Insert the 3 x AA Ni-MH 1200mAh rechargeable batteries into the compartment, observing the correct polarity.
  5. Replace the battery cover and screw it down firmly until it cannot be moved, ensuring a tight seal.

5.2 Charging the Batteries

The AR-9R Walkie Talkie offers convenient multi-charging options:

  1. Place the radio(s) into the drop-in charging tray.
  2. Connect the USB charging cable to the charging tray and then to the charger adapter.
  3. Plug the charger adapter into a standard power outlet.
  4. Alternatively, the USB connector allows charging via a PC, car charger, or power bank for added flexibility.
  5. The charging indicator on the radio or charging tray will show the charging status. Ensure batteries are fully charged before first use.

6. Operating Instructions

6.1 Power On/Off

Long press the Power On/Off/Call Tone button to turn the radio on or off.

6.2 Basic Communication

  1. Select a Channel: Use the Up/Down arrow buttons to select one of the 16 available PMR channels.
  2. Set Privacy Codes (CTCSS/DCS): To avoid interference and ensure private communication, set a CTCSS (Continuous Tone-Coded Squelch System) or DCS (Digitally Coded Squelch) code. The AR-9R supports 121 privacy codes, offering 2662 combinations. Refer to the full user manual for detailed instructions on setting these codes.
  3. Transmit: Press and hold the Push to Talk (PTT) button. Speak clearly into the microphone.
  4. Receive: Release the PTT button to listen for incoming transmissions.

6.3 VOX Function (Hands-Free Operation)

The VOX (Voice Operated Exchange) function allows for hands-free communication. When activated, the radio will automatically transmit when it detects your voice, eliminating the need to press the PTT button. This is useful when your hands are busy.

6.4 Keypad Lock

To prevent accidental changes to settings, you can lock the keypad. Refer to the full user manual for specific instructions on how to activate and deactivate the keypad lock.

6.5 Built-in LED Flashlight

Press the Lamp On/Off button to activate the built-in LED flashlight. This feature is useful for navigating in low-light conditions. The flashlight has a diameter of 10mm.

6.6 SOS Emergency Function

In an emergency, press the dedicated SOS button to activate a red flashlight, signaling for help.

6.7 IP67 Waterproof and Floating Design

The AR-9R is IP67 rated, providing complete protection from dust and allowing it to withstand water immersion for 30 minutes in 1-meter deep water. Its design also allows it to float on water. A water-activated white LED will flash automatically if the radio drops into water, making it easy to locate in dark conditions.

6.8 NOAA Weather Alerts (US Only)

For users in the US, the AR-9R can receive NOAA Weather Alerts, providing critical information during extreme weather conditions.

6.9 Communication Range

The effective communication range of the AR-9R varies significantly based on environmental conditions:

  • Between mountains: Up to 32 miles
  • On the sea: Up to 14 miles
  • In urban areas: Up to 3 miles

7. Maintenance

7.1 General Care

  • Clean the radio's exterior with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
  • Keep the charging ports and accessory ports free from dust and debris.
  • Store the radio in a cool, dry place when not in use.

7.2 Waterproof Seal Maintenance

To ensure the IP67 waterproof rating, proper maintenance of the battery compartment seal is crucial:

  • Before each use, especially after opening the battery compartment, inspect the rubber ring (seal) for any dirt, damage, or particles.
  • Clean the rubber ring and its seating area with a clean, lint-free cloth.
  • Ensure the battery cover is securely fastened with all screws tightened to prevent water ingress.

7.3 Battery Care

  • Use only the specified 1200mAh Ni-MH AA rechargeable batteries.
  • Avoid overcharging or completely draining the batteries to prolong their lifespan.
  • If the radio will not be used for an extended period, remove the batteries.

8. Troubleshooting
