1. Product Overview

The SolarEpic MPPT Solar Charge Controller is designed to optimize the power generation from solar panels in real-time. It tracks the maximum voltage and current (VI) to ensure the battery charges at its peak power output. This controller is a core component in off-grid photovoltaic systems, coordinating the operation of solar panels, batteries, and loads.

The device features touch-key operation and settings, with additional monitoring and control capabilities via Bluetooth or RJ45 communication interfaces. Users can view operating parameters, logs, historical data, and modify settings to suit various system requirements. It supports the standard Modbus communication protocol for secondary development and includes comprehensive electronic fault self-test and protection functions to prevent damage from installation errors or system failures.

  • Communication: Supports standard Modbus protocol via 8-pin RJ45 interface/RS485 for host computer monitoring, and external Bluetooth/WIFI module expansion for app cloud monitoring.
  • Protection Mechanisms: Built-in overtemperature protection, temperature compensation, battery overtemperature protection, input/output over-voltage protection, and anti-reverse connection protection.

3. Setup and Installation

3.1 Unpacking and Inspection

Upon receiving your SolarEpic MPPT Solar Charge Controller, carefully unpack the unit and inspect it for any signs of damage. Ensure all components are present according to the packing list.

3.2 Mounting the Controller

Mount the controller in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, high temperatures, and moisture. Ensure sufficient clearance around the unit for proper fan cooling. The controller is designed for fan cooling.

3.3 Wiring Connections

Important Safety Note: Before making any connections, ensure that the solar panels are disconnected or covered to prevent power generation, and the battery bank is disconnected from any loads. Always connect the battery first, then the solar panels, and finally the load.

  1. Battery Connection: Connect the battery cables to the battery terminals on the controller. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -). The controller accepts a maximum of #3 AWG wire (approximately 25mm²).
  2. Solar Panel Connection: Connect the solar panel cables to the PV input terminals on the controller. Observe correct polarity.
  3. Load Connection (Optional): If connecting a DC load directly to the controller, connect the load cables to the load terminals.

  • 'S' Button: Used to cycle through different display screens and enter settings menus.
  • 'OK' Button: Used to confirm selections and save settings.

4.3 Setting Battery Type

The controller supports various battery types. It is crucial to select the correct battery type for optimal charging and battery longevity. Refer to your battery manufacturer's specifications for the recommended charging parameters.

  1. Press the 'S' button to navigate to the battery type setting screen.
  2. Use the 'S' button to cycle through options (e.g., Colloidal, Sealed, Open, Li-ion, User-defined).
  3. Press 'OK' to confirm your selection.

4.4 Load Control Methods

The controller offers multiple load control methods:

  • Normally Open/Closed Mode
  • Dual Period Control Mode
  • Light Control Mode
  • Light Control - Fixed Time Control Mode

Select the appropriate mode based on your application requirements using the 'S' and 'OK' buttons in the settings menu.

4.5 Communication and Monitoring

The controller can be connected to a computer or other devices for advanced monitoring and control:

  • RJ45/RS485 Interface: Use the 8-pin RJ45 interface for RS485 communication to connect to a host computer.
  • Bluetooth/WIFI Module (Optional): An external Bluetooth or WIFI module can be expanded to enable app-based cloud monitoring and remote control.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your solar charge controller.

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the exterior of the controller, especially the cooling fan and vents, to prevent dust buildup that can impede airflow. Use a dry, soft cloth.
  • Connections: Annually check all wiring connections for tightness and corrosion. Loose connections can lead to overheating and poor performance.
  • Environment: Ensure the installation environment remains within the specified operating temperature range (-20℃ to +55℃) and free from excessive moisture.
  • Firmware Updates: Check the manufacturer's website for any available firmware updates that may improve performance or add new features.

6. Troubleshooting

The controller is equipped with fault LED indications and various protection functions to help diagnose and prevent issues.

  • Fault LED (Red): If the 'ALARM' LED is illuminated, refer to the controller's display for specific error codes or messages.
  • Overtemperature Protection: If the controller's internal temperature exceeds a set value, the charging current will linearly decrease to prevent damage. Ensure adequate ventilation.
  • Input/Output Over-voltage Protection: The controller protects against excessive voltage from PV input or to the battery/load. Verify PV array voltage and battery bank configuration.
  • Anti-Reverse Connection Protection: Prevents damage from incorrect polarity connections during installation. Always double-check wiring before powering on.
  • Battery Drop Protection: Protects the battery from excessive discharge.

If you encounter persistent issues, consult the detailed troubleshooting section in the full product manual (if available) or contact customer support.
