6. Operating Instructions

  1. Applying Coupling Agent:

Apply a small amount of coupling agent (e.g., glycerin, oil, or specialized ultrasonic gel) evenly to the surface of the material to be measured. This ensures good acoustic contact between the probe and the material, which is crucial for accurate readings.

Diagram showing the application of coupling agent and the probe placement for measurement, along with factors affecting accuracy.

Figure 6: Steps for applying coupling agent and placing the probe.

  2. Performing Measurements:

Gently press the probe onto the prepared surface. The display will show the thickness reading. The device supports two main measurement modes:

    • Single Measurement: For individual, static readings.
    • Continuous Measurement: For scanning surfaces and observing real-time thickness changes.

Use the "MODE/SAVE" button to switch between modes and save data.

7. Calibration

Regular calibration ensures the accuracy of your measurements. The BSIDE T7 comes with a 4mm thickness steel calibration block.

  1. Ensure the probe is clean and free of debris.
  2. Apply a small amount of coupling agent to the 4mm calibration block.
  3. Place the probe firmly on the calibration block.
  4. Navigate to the calibration menu on the device (usually via the "CALIB/MENU" button).
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to perform the calibration. The device will adjust its internal settings based on the known thickness of the block.
  6. Verify the calibration by taking a measurement of the 4mm block; the reading should be 4.00mm.

8. Care and Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe the probe and the device body with a soft, dry cloth to remove any residual coupling agent or dirt. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the device in its protective carrying pouch in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Battery Care: Recharge the battery regularly, even if not in frequent use, to maintain battery health. Avoid completely draining the battery for extended periods.
  • Probe Care: Handle the probe carefully. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to excessive force, as this can affect its accuracy.

9. Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No reading or unstable reading
  • Insufficient or incorrect coupling agent.
  • Poor contact between probe and material.
  • Rough or uneven surface.
  • Material outside measurement range.
  • Probe or material temperature too high/low.
  • Apply adequate coupling agent.
  • Ensure firm and perpendicular probe placement.
  • Prepare surface (clean, smooth).
  • Check material specifications against device range.
  • Allow device/material to reach ambient temperature.
Device does not power on
  • Battery is depleted.
  • Power button not held long enough.
  • Charge the device fully.
  • Press and hold the power button for 2-3 seconds.
Inaccurate readings
  • Device not calibrated.
  • Incorrect sound velocity setting for material.
