Figure 8: Smart Measurement Mode in action
  1. Press the power button to turn on the instrument. The instrument will display "---" and enter the intelligent measurement mode.
  2. The meter will automatically recognize the current measured signal by touching the positive probe (1) to the power supply or the resistance (parallel), and connecting the negative clamp (7) to ground.
  3. Read the measurement results from the display screen (4).

Note:

  • The minimum discernible voltage in this mode is 0.8 V.
  • When measuring resistance, if Resistance < 50Ω, the buzzer will sound.
  • When the measuring circuit is on or off, the reading may be affected by other channels between the meter and pen.

5.3. Data Hold

After booting, when data is measured, press the HOLD key (5) for 1 second to lock the data on the display. Press it again to release the lock.

5.4. Flashlight

Press the Light/Backlight key (6) for 2 seconds to turn the flashlight (2) on or off.

9. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your GVDA GD181 Voltage Detector Pen.

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Instrument does not power on. Battery is dead or incorrectly installed. Check battery polarity and replace with a new 1.5V AAA battery if necessary. Ensure the power button is pressed for 2 seconds.
Inaccurate readings or "OL" displayed when not expected. Low battery; measuring outside the specified range; instrument damage. Replace battery. Ensure the voltage/resistance being measured is within the instrument's range. If the issue persists, the instrument may be damaged and should not be used.
Buzzer does not sound during continuity test. Resistance is above 50Ω; circuit is open. Verify the circuit is closed and the resistance is below 50Ω. Check for breaks in the wire or faulty components.
Flashlight or backlight not working. Feature not activated; low battery. Press the Light/Backlight key for the specified duration (2s for flashlight, 1s for backlight). Replace battery if low.

10. User Tips

  • Always ensure the negative clamp is securely connected to a good ground point when testing automotive circuits for accurate voltage readings.
  • For quick checks, the Smart Measurement Mode is highly convenient as it automatically detects the type of measurement.
  • Utilize the data hold function when working in confined spaces or when the display is not easily visible during measurement.
  • The compact size makes it ideal for carrying in a toolbox or pocket for on-the-go diagnostics.
