1. Introduction

The HDmatters 4K HDMI Audio Extractor is designed to separate audio signals from an HDMI video stream. This device allows you to output audio to external sound systems via analog stereo (3.5mm AUX) or high-definition multichannel digital optical (S/PDIF) outputs, while simultaneously passing the video signal to a display. It supports video resolutions up to 4K@30Hz and is fully compliant with HDMI 1.4b and HDCP 1.4 standards. This versatile audio splitter is compatible with a wide range of devices including PS4, PS5, HDTVs, and DVD players.

Ports and Controls:

  • HDMI Input: Connects to your HDMI source device (e.g., PS4, PS5, DVD Player).
  • HDMI Output: Connects to your display device (e.g., TV, Monitor, Projector).
  • 3.5mm Audio Interface (AUX): Analog stereo audio output for headphones or stereo speakers.
  • SPDIF (Optical): Digital optical audio output for 5.1 channel or stereo audio receivers.
  • DC 5V: Power input port (Micro USB).
  • EDID Switch (TV/2.0/5.1): Allows selection of audio output mode.

5. Setup Instructions

Follow these steps to set up your HDMI Audio Extractor:

  1. Connect HDMI Source: Plug an HDMI cable from your source device (e.g., PS4, PS5, Blu-ray player, TV Box, Laptop) into the HDMI Input port on the extractor.
  2. Connect Display: Plug another HDMI cable from the HDMI Output port on the extractor to your display device (e.g., TV, Monitor, Projector).
  3. Connect Audio Output:
    • For analog stereo audio, connect a 3.5mm audio cable from the 3.5mm Audio Interface (AUX) port to your headphones or stereo speakers.
    • For digital multichannel audio, connect an optical S/PDIF cable from the SPDIF port to your 5.1 channel audio system or soundbar.
  4. Power On: Connect the provided USB power cable to the DC 5V port on the extractor and plug the other end into a 5V USB power source (e.g., a USB wall adapter, TV USB port, or computer USB port).
  5. Select EDID Mode: Adjust the EDID switch to your desired audio output mode (see Section 6 for details).

6. Operating Instructions

The HDMI Audio Extractor features an EDID switch to control the audio output format. Select the appropriate mode based on your audio setup:

Figure 6.1: EDID Settings Explanation
  • TV Mode: In this mode, the S/PDIF and 3.5mm audio formats will depend on the EDID (Extended Display Identification Data) of your connected TV. The extractor will pass through the audio capabilities reported by your TV.
  • 2.0H Mode: This setting forces the S/PDIF and 3.5mm outputs to stereo audio. Use this mode if your audio receiver or headphones only support stereo sound.
  • 5.1CH Mode: When selected, the S/PDIF output will provide 5.1 channel audio. The 3.5mm output will not produce any sound in this mode. Important: Ensure your video source is truly outputting 5.1 channel audio for this mode to function correctly.

7. Troubleshooting

  • No 4K@30Hz Output: If your source devices (e.g., PS5, PS4 Pro, Xbox Series X/S) do not display 4K@30Hz, ensure that both your display and all connected devices are HDMI 2.0 compliant. This extractor supports HDMI 1.4b, which limits 4K to 30Hz.
  • No 5.1 Channel Audio: To get 5.1 channel audio, the video source must be configured to output 5.1 channel audio. Also, ensure the EDID switch is set to '5.1CH Mode'.
  • No Audio or Noise from 3.5mm AUX: When using the 3.5mm AUX audio port, set the audio mode of your HDMI video source to PCM 2CH. Incorrect settings may result in no audio or static noise.
  • No Audio when HDMI Output is connected to AV Receiver: This audio extractor does not support HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) or eARC. You cannot connect the HDMI output of this extractor to an AV receiver for HDMI audio extraction. The HDMI output is intended for video passthrough to a display.
  • Pink Screen or No Audio from AUX/SPDIF when connected to Monitor/Projector: If the HDMI output is connected to a monitor or projector with both VGA and HDMI ports, and you experience a pink screen or no audio, it is likely due to the EDID of your display device. The HDMI port on such displays might be based on VGA standards despite being a physical HDMI port. This is not a quality problem with the splitter.

10. User Tips

  • PS5/PS4 Pro Compatibility: While the extractor works with PS5 and PS4 Pro, achieving 4K output depends on your display and other connected devices being HDMI 2.0 compliant. The extractor itself supports up to 4K@30Hz (HDMI 1.4b).
  • 5.1 Channel Audio: Always verify that your source device is configured to output 5.1 channel audio if you intend to use the 5.1CH EDID mode.
  • Analog Audio (3.5mm AUX): For clear audio from the 3.5mm port, ensure your HDMI source's audio settings are set to PCM 2CH.
  • ARC Functionality: This device does NOT support HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel) or eARC. Do not attempt to connect the HDMI output to an AV receiver for audio extraction via ARC.
