2. Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions when using the stud finder:

  • Read all instructions before use.
  • Do not rely solely on the detection results. Always use other sources of information to confirm the presence of objects before drilling, cutting, or performing any invasive work.
  • Exercise extreme caution when working near detected live AC wires. Disconnect power if necessary.
  • The detector's ability to detect objects can be affected by environmental factors such as moisture, the size of objects, metallic building materials, foil-laminated insulation materials, and conductive wallpaper.
  • Keep the device dry and clean. Do not expose it to extreme temperatures or humidity.

3. Product Overview

The HANMATEK SF1 Stud Finder is equipped with a clear digital LCD display and an audio alarm for easy and accurate detection. It features multiple scanning modes to adapt to different materials and detection needs.

Four scanning modes: Exact, Deep, Metals, AC Scan.
The SF1 Stud Finder offers four distinct scanning modes.

Key Features:

  • Accurate and Quick Detection: Provides precise location of hidden objects.
  • Four Scanning Modes: Exact Mode, Deep Mode (for wood studs), Metals Mode, and AC Scan Mode.
  • Live AC Wire Detection: Helps prevent drilling into live wires, indicating their presence with a flashing icon and rapid 'didi' sound.
  • Digital LCD Display: Easy-to-read screen shows detection depth, signal strength, and center point.
  • Audio Alarm: Provides audible alerts for detected objects.

4. Setup

Battery Installation:

  1. Locate the battery lid (9) on the back of the device.
  2. Open the battery lid.
  3. Insert one 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Close the battery lid securely.

5. Operating Instructions

General Operation Steps:

  1. Power On: Press the Power button (5) to turn on the device.
  2. Select Mode: Choose the appropriate scanning mode using the Wood Studs detection mode button (6) or the Metal and wires detection mode button (7). The available modes are Exact Mode, Deep Mode, Metals Mode, and AC Scan Mode.
  3. Calibration: Place the machine flat against the wall or surface you intend to scan. Press and hold the Power button (5) until calibration is complete (usually indicated by a stable display and a beep).
  4. Scanning: While keeping the device flat against the surface, move it slowly and steadily across the area.
  5. Interpreting Results: The display (4) will show icons and a signal strength indicator. An audio alarm will sound when an object is detected.

Understanding Detection Modes:

  • Exact Mode (Wood Studs): For precise location of wood studs up to 3/4" (20mm) deep.
  • Deep Mode (Wood Studs): For detecting wood studs up to 1-1/2" (38mm) deep. Useful for thicker drywall.
  • Metals Mode: Detects ferrous metals (like rebar) up to 4.7" (120mm) and non-ferrous metals (like copper pipes) up to 4" (100mm).
  • AC Scan Mode: Detects "live" AC wires (220V@50Hz / 110V@60Hz) up to 2" (50mm) deep. When an AC signal is received, the AC icon on the display will flash, and a rapid "didi" sound will be emitted.

6. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the device with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the stud finder in a dry, dust-free environment when not in use. Remove the battery if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace the 9V battery when the low battery indicator appears on the display.

7. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your stud finder, consider the following:

  • Inaccurate Readings: Ensure the device is properly calibrated against the wall before scanning. Environmental factors such as high moisture, metallic building materials, or foil-laminated insulation can affect accuracy.
  • No Detection: Check if the correct scanning mode is selected for the target object. Ensure the battery has sufficient charge.
  • Interference: Strong magnetic or electromagnetic fields from other equipment can interfere with detection. Try to operate the device away from such sources.

9. User Tips

  • PVC Pipe Detection: The SF1 Stud Finder is designed to detect metals and live AC wires. It does not specifically detect non-metallic objects like PVC water pipes. For such materials, consider alternative detection methods.
  • Drywall Scanning: When scanning drywall, ensure you switch to the appropriate wood stud detection mode (Exact or Deep) for accurate results.
  • Slow Movement: Always move the device slowly across the surface during scanning to allow it sufficient time to detect and process signals.
