6. Setup

6.1. Battery Installation

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the device.
  2. Slide open the battery cover.
  3. Insert two (2) 1.5V AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  4. Close the battery cover securely.

6.2. Power On/Off

  • To power on the device, press and hold the Power Button (12) until the display illuminates.
  • To power off the device, press and hold the Power Button (12) again until the display turns off. The device also features an automatic shutdown function to conserve battery life.

6.3. Initial Calibration (Zero Calibration)

For accurate measurements, it is recommended to perform a zero calibration before first use and periodically thereafter.

  1. Ensure the device is powered on.
  2. Place the probe (13) firmly and flatly on the bare metal (standard aluminum base sheet provided) surface.
  3. Press the Right Key (9) to initiate zero calibration. The display should show '0.00' or a similar indication of successful calibration.
  4. Repeat this process on both magnetic (Fe) and non-magnetic (NFE) base materials if you intend to measure both types of substrates.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Device does not power onDead or incorrectly installed batteriesReplace batteries with new 1.5V AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity.
Inaccurate readingsDevice not calibrated; dirty probe; unstable contact with surfacePerform zero calibration. Clean the probe. Ensure firm and perpendicular contact with the surface.
Low power indicator (5) is onBatteries are lowReplace both 1.5V AAA batteries.
Display is dim or flickeringLow batteries; backlight settingReplace batteries. Press the Down Key (10) to adjust backlight brightness.
Device shuts off unexpectedlyAutomatic shutdown activated; low batteriesThis is a normal power-saving feature. If it happens too frequently, replace batteries.

10. User Tips

  • Consistent Placement: For best results, try to place the probe on the surface in the same manner each time – firmly and perpendicularly.
  • Multiple Readings: Take several readings in different spots on the same area and use the statistical functions (AVG, MIN, MAX) to get a more reliable assessment of the coating thickness.
  • Surface Preparation: Ensure the measurement surface is clean and dry, free from dust, dirt, or moisture, which can affect accuracy.
  • Calibration Check: Periodically check calibration with the provided films to ensure continued accuracy, especially if you suspect inconsistent readings.
  • Understanding Readings: A higher paint thickness on a vehicle might indicate previous repairs or repainting. Compare readings across different panels to identify inconsistencies.
