Assembly Instructions

This is a DIY kit and requires careful assembly. Follow these steps:

  1. Prepare the PCB: Identify the main PCB. Solder all resistors and other small components according to the markings on the board.
  2. Solder LEDs: Carefully solder the 25 LED segments onto the PCB, ensuring correct polarity and alignment.
  3. Install Main Chip: Note the direction of the main chip (U1, STC 12C5A08S2) as indicated on the PCB. Solder it securely.
  4. Test the Board: Before installing the microphone, it is recommended to debug the board to ensure it functions correctly. Power it on and check if the LEDs light up.
  5. Install Microphone: Once the board is confirmed to be working, install the independent MIC module at the designated spot.
  6. Assemble Plexiglass Layers: Stack the plexiglass segments around the LED array, securing them with the provided screws, nuts, and spacers. Ensure the layers are aligned to form the crystal column.
  7. Attach Base: Secure the base of the unit, which typically includes suction cups for stability.

Operating Instructions

The KS25 VU Meter offers various modes and settings controlled by a single button. All settings are saved with power-down memory.

Power On/Off

Connect the device to a 5V DC power source using the provided USB cable. The device will power on automatically.

Key Operations

  • Short Press: Cycles through the 8 display modes.
  • Long Press (1 second): Adjusts the drop speed (10 levels). The top LEDs will display the current speed setting (default is 4; 1-10, brighter means slower drop speed).
  • Long Press (3 seconds): Adjusts the 7-level gain setting. The bottom blue LEDs will show the corresponding gain level (default is 4).
  • Long Press (6 seconds): Switches between channel and voice activation modes.
    • Pink LED light ON: Left channel (pink L)
    • Red LED light ON: Right channel (orange R)
    • Orange LED light ON: Voice activated (line input is automatically turned off in this state)

Gain Adjustment Details

The 7-level gain adjustment is indicated by the right top LEDs. The default value is 4.

  • Levels 5, 6, 7: Enlarge the gain by 1, 2, or 3 times, respectively.
  • Levels 1, 2, 3: Reduce the gain by 3, 2, or 1 times, respectively.

Display Modes

The KS25 features 8 classic display modes:

  1. Columnar mode
  2. Cylindrical peak hold mode
  3. Cylindrical peak, peak up mode
  4. Mirror mode (middle to both sides)
  5. Single point mode
  6. Peak up mode
  7. Single peak mode
  8. Mute all-bright mode (useful for testing LEDs)

Maintenance

To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your KS25 VU Meter:

  • Keep the device clean and free from dust. Use a soft, dry cloth for cleaning.
  • Avoid exposing the device to extreme temperatures or humidity.
  • Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials for cleaning, as they may damage the plexiglass or electronic components.
  • Ensure proper ventilation if used for extended periods.

Troubleshooting

  • LEDs are beating without sound input: This may be due to excessive power supply ripple. Replace the power supply with a low-ripple 5V DC power supply, or use a computer USB port or a power bank for testing.
  • Audio input connected to amplifier/speaker output: If connecting the audio input to an amplifier output or speaker, use a high-to-low signal attenuator. Ensure the audio signal input voltage is controlled within 5V to prevent damage to the sound column.
  • Device not powering on: Check the USB power connection. Ensure the 5V DC power source is functioning correctly.
  • LEDs not responding to sound: Verify the audio input cable is securely connected. If using MIC mode, ensure the microphone is correctly installed and the mode is selected. Check gain settings.

User Tips

  • Careful Assembly: As this is a DIY kit, take your time during assembly, especially with soldering. Double-check component orientations (e.g., chip direction, LED polarity) before soldering to avoid damage.
  • Power Source Quality: If you notice erratic LED behavior without audio input, try using a different 5V power source, such as a computer's USB port or a high-quality power bank, to minimize power ripple.
  • Audio Input Level: Always ensure the audio input signal voltage does not exceed 5V. If connecting to a powerful audio output, use an attenuator to protect the device.
  • Experiment with Modes: Explore the different display modes and gain settings to find the visual effect that best suits your audio and environment.
