5. Setup Instructions

Follow these steps to set up your FOXWELL SD203 smoke machine for operation:

  1. Pour in Baby Oil:
    • Remove the oil filler cap on the top of the unit.
    • Use the provided funnel to carefully pour baby oil (test oil) into the oil filler.
    • Observe the liquid level window on the side of the unit. Do not overfill; adding too much test oil may cause oil spraying.
    • Replace the oil filler cap securely.

  2. Connect the Smoke Tube:
    • Connect one end of the smoke tube to the "Smoke Vent" port on the back of the SD203 unit.
    • Ensure a secure connection to prevent leaks.
  3. Connect the Power Cord:
    • Connect the power cord to the "DC 12V" input port on the back of the SD203 unit.
    • Attach the alligator clips of the power cord to a 12V vehicle battery (red clip to positive, black clip to negative).
  4. Prepare for Testing:
    • Identify the system you wish to test (e.g., intake, exhaust, EVAP).
    • Use the appropriate adaptor (e.g., intake adapter cone, inflatable adaptor, cap stoppers) to seal off the system's opening where smoke will be introduced.
    • Hang the SD203 unit using the provided hook in a stable position, ensuring it is level.

6. Operating Instructions

The FOXWELL SD203 offers dual-mode operation for efficient leak detection.

6.1. Powering On and Mode Selection

  1. Once connected to the 12V battery, the unit will power on.
  2. Use the "Switchover" button to select between Air Mode and Smoke Mode. The corresponding indicator light will illuminate.
  3. Press the "Start/Stop" button to begin the test.

6.2. Air Mode Operation

In Air Mode, the device pumps air into the system to quickly assess for leaks without consuming smoke oil.

  • Select Air Mode using the "Switchover" button.
  • Press "Start/Stop". The device will begin pumping air.
  • Observe the pressure gauge.
    • If the pressure gauge value remains constant (e.g., reaches 0.8 bar or above), the system has good tightness, and there is likely no leak.
    • If the pressure drops, it indicates a leak. Proceed to Smoke Mode for precise location.

6.3. Smoke Mode Operation

Smoke Mode is used to visually locate leaks by introducing non-toxic smoke into the system.

  • Select Smoke Mode using the "Switchover" button.
  • Press "Start/Stop". Smoke will begin to generate and exit the smoke tube within 2-3 seconds.
  • Insert the smoke tube into the sealed system.
  • Adjust Smoke Output: Use the adjustable flow meter knob to regulate the smoke output size as needed for your test.
  • Observe for visible smoke escaping from any part of the system to pinpoint the leak location.

6.4. Assessing Extent of Leakage

The pressure gauge and flow meter provide indications of the leak's severity:

  • NO Leak: When the pressure gauge value remains constant and the flow meter reads zero (ball at bottom of scale), there is no leakage in the system.
  • Small Leak: If the pressure gauge value drops and the ball in the flow meter slowly falls to the bottom of the scale, it indicates a small leak.
  • Massive Leak: When the pressure gauge value reaches zero and the flow meter ball never falls to the bottom of the scale, it indicates a large leak.

7. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your FOXWELL SD203.

  • Smoke Oil Management:
    • Always use high-quality baby oil or approved test oil.
    • Do not overfill the oil reservoir.
    • Regularly check the oil level through the liquid level window. Refill when low.
    • If the device is not used for an extended period, it is recommended to drain the smoke oil and store the unit dry.
  • Cleaning:
    • Wipe the exterior of the unit with a soft, damp cloth.
    • Ensure the smoke tube and adapters are clean and free from obstructions after each use.
  • Storage:
    • Store the device in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
    • Keep all accessories organized in the provided storage case to prevent loss or damage.
  • Temperature Control: The SD203 features an adaptive temperature control system. Avoid operating the device in conditions outside its specified temperature range (-68°F to 248°F) to prevent damage.

8. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with your SD203.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
No smoke output
  • Insufficient smoke oil.
  • Smoke tube blocked.
  • Device in Air Mode.
  • Power connection issue.
  • Refill smoke oil to the appropriate level.
  • Check and clear any blockages in the smoke tube.
  • Ensure the device is switched to Smoke Mode.
  • Verify secure connection to 12V battery.
Oil spraying from smoke vent
  • Overfilled smoke oil reservoir.
  • Drain excess smoke oil until the level is within the recommended range.
Inaccurate pressure gauge/flow meter readings
  • Loose connections in the system being tested.
  • Faulty gauge/meter.
  • Ensure all connections to the vehicle system are tight and properly sealed.
  • Contact support if you suspect a faulty component.
Device overheats
  • Prolonged use in extreme conditions.
  • Blocked ventilation.
  • Allow the device to cool down.
  • Ensure ventilation slots are clear and unobstructed.
  • The adaptive temperature control system should manage this, but extreme conditions may still cause issues.

9. User Tips

  • Oil Type: For optimal performance and safety, use baby oil (mineral oil) as the smoke-generating fluid. This is generally non-toxic and effective for leak detection.
  • Initial Air Test: Always start with the Air Mode to quickly check for significant leaks before switching to Smoke Mode. This saves smoke oil and time.
  • System Preparation: Before introducing smoke, ensure the system being tested is properly sealed at all entry and exit points, except where the smoke is introduced.
  • Safety First: Always work in a well-ventilated area. Although the smoke is non-toxic, prolonged exposure is not recommended.
