5. Setup and Binding
The binding process is crucial for establishing communication between your RadioMaster transmitter and receiver. Ensure your transmitter is set to the correct protocol (D8, D16v1, or SFHSS) before proceeding.
5.1. Pinout Diagrams
Refer to the following diagrams for correct pin connections for each receiver model:

Detailed pinout diagrams for R84, R86, R86C, and R88 V2 receivers.
- R84: Features CH1/2, CH3/4, and power (+/-) pins.
- R86: Features CH1-CH6 and power (+/-) pins.
- R86C: Features CH1-CH6, S.BUS, and power (+/-) pins.
- R88: Features CH1-CH8, S (SBUS), and power (+/-) pins.
5.2. Binding Procedure
- Power off your transmitter and receiver.
- Connect power to the receiver while holding down the BIND button (or shorting the BIND pins if applicable). The LED on the receiver should start flashing rapidly, indicating it is in bind mode.
- On your RadioMaster transmitter, navigate to the model setup menu and select the appropriate protocol (D8, D16v1, or SFHSS).
- Initiate the BIND function on your transmitter.
- The receiver's LED should turn solid, indicating a successful bind.
- Power cycle both the receiver and transmitter. After restarting, the receiver's LED should be solid, confirming a successful connection.
Note: LBT Versions are limited to D16 LBT mode only and will not work with D8 or SFHSS. R8 series receivers have factory Firmware installed that can not be changed. Please purchase the correct version for your region.
Note: These receivers do not support Frysky transmitters; they are designed only for MPA radio systems.
6. Operating Instructions
6.1. PWM Output
For receivers with PWM output (R84, R86, R86C, R88), connect your servos, ESCs, or other PWM-controlled devices directly to the corresponding channel pins on the receiver. Ensure correct polarity (+, -, Signal) for each connection.
6.2. SBUS Output (R86C, R88)
The R86C and R88 receivers offer SBUS output, which allows for a single wire connection to a flight controller, simplifying wiring. Connect the SBUS pin on the receiver to the SBUS input on your flight controller. Configure your flight controller software to recognize SBUS input.
6.3. RSSI Return (R86C, R88)
The R86C and R88 models support RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) return. This feature allows your transmitter or flight controller to display the signal strength from the receiver, providing valuable telemetry data for flight safety. Consult your flight controller or transmitter manual for specific instructions on how to enable and display RSSI data.
7. Maintenance
- Keep the receiver clean and free from dust, dirt, and moisture.
- Regularly inspect antenna wires for any damage or kinks. Ensure antennas are positioned correctly for optimal signal reception.
- Avoid exposing the receiver to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight for prolonged periods.
- Do not attempt to modify the receiver's firmware, as it is factory installed and cannot be changed.
8. Troubleshooting
- Receiver not binding:
- Ensure your transmitter is set to the correct protocol (D8, D16v1, or SFHSS).
- Verify the receiver is in bind mode (rapidly flashing LED).
- Check power supply to the receiver (4.5-8.4V).
- Confirm the receiver is compatible with your transmitter (not Frysky). - No control after binding:
- Check all wiring connections between the receiver and servos/flight controller.
- Ensure the flight controller is correctly configured for the receiver's output type (PWM/SBUS).
- Power cycle both transmitter and receiver. - Short range or signal loss:
- Inspect antenna placement and ensure they are not obstructed or damaged.
- Avoid placing the receiver near noisy electronic components (ESCs, motors).
- Perform a range check in an open area.
9. User Tips
- Protocol Compatibility: Always double-check that your transmitter's protocol matches the receiver's. Remember that LBT versions are specifically for D16 LBT mode and won't work with D8 or SFHSS.
- Transmitter Brand: These receivers are designed for RadioMaster (MPA) radios and are not compatible with Frysky transmitters.
- Antenna Placement: For optimal range and signal quality, ensure your receiver antennas are mounted at a 90-degree angle to each other and away from carbon fiber or metal parts of your aircraft.
- Power Supply: While the receivers support up to 8.4V, ensure your power source provides stable voltage within the specified range to prevent brownouts or damage.
