Setup

  1. Attach to Rod: Securely mount the spinning reel onto the reel seat of your fishing rod. Ensure the reel foot is firmly seated and the locking mechanism is tightened.
  2. Spooling Line: Open the bail arm. Pass your fishing line through the rod guides, starting from the tip. Tie the line to the reel spool using an arbor knot or a similar secure knot. Close the bail arm.
  3. Winding Line: With the bail arm closed, begin to reel in the line. Keep slight tension on the line as it spools onto the reel. Ensure the line lays evenly across the spool. Do not overfill the spool; leave a small gap from the edge to prevent tangles.
  4. Adjust Drag: Before fishing, set your drag. Pull line directly from the spool (not through the rod guides) and adjust the drag knob until line pulls off smoothly with moderate resistance. This prevents line breakage when fighting a fish.

Operating Instructions

  1. Casting:
    • Hold the rod with the reel beneath it.
    • Use your index finger to hold the line against the rod handle.
    • Open the bail arm with your other hand.
    • Bring the rod back over your shoulder, then swiftly cast forward, releasing your index finger as the rod reaches the 10 o'clock position.
    • As the lure hits the water, close the bail arm manually or by turning the handle.
  2. Retrieving:
    • Turn the reel handle to retrieve your line and lure.
    • Maintain a steady retrieve speed appropriate for your lure and target fish.
    • The Infinite Antireverse system will prevent the handle from spinning backward, ensuring immediate hook sets.
  3. Fighting a Fish:
    • Keep the rod tip up to absorb shock and maintain tension on the line.
    • Let the drag do its job; do not overtighten it. If the fish pulls hard, let the line run.
    • Pump the rod by lifting it, then lowering it while reeling in the slack line.

Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the life and performance of your DAIWA RS spinning reel.

  1. Cleaning After Each Use: After every fishing trip, especially in saltwater, rinse the reel thoroughly with fresh water. Do not submerge the reel. Wipe it dry with a soft cloth.
  2. Regular Lubrication: Periodically apply a small amount of reel oil to moving parts such as the handle knob, bail arm pivot, and line roller. Use reel grease on gears and the main shaft. Refer to a general fishing reel maintenance guide for specific lubrication points.
  3. Check for Wear: Regularly inspect the line roller for smooth rotation, the bail arm for proper function, and the drag system for consistent performance. Replace worn parts as needed.
  4. Storage: Store your reel in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Consider using a reel cover to protect it from dust and scratches.

Troubleshooting

  • Line Tangles/Wind Knots:
    • Cause: Overfilling the spool, loose line, improper casting technique, or line twist.
    • Solution: Do not overfill the spool. Ensure line is spooled tightly. Practice smooth casting. If line twist is severe, let out a long length of line behind a boat or in a current without a lure to allow it to untwist.
  • Sticking/Jerky Drag:
    • Cause: Dirty or dry drag washers.
    • Solution: Disassemble the drag knob and washers (refer to a general reel diagram if unsure). Clean washers and apply a thin layer of drag grease.
  • Grinding/Rough Reeling:
    • Cause: Lack of lubrication, dirt in gears, or worn bearings.
    • Solution: Clean and lubricate internal gears and bearings. If the issue persists, professional servicing may be required. Note that a new reel may have a slight transmission sound, which is normal.
  • Bail Arm Not Closing Properly:
    • Cause: Debris, bent bail wire, or spring issue.
    • Solution: Check for and remove any debris. Gently inspect the bail wire for bends. If it's a spring issue, professional repair might be needed.

User Tips

  • Match Reel to Rod: Ensure your DAIWA RS reel is balanced with your fishing rod for optimal casting and comfort.
  • Line Selection: Choose a fishing line (Nylon or PE braid) that matches the reel's capacity and your target species. Refer to the line capacity specifications for each model.
  • Practice Drag Settings: Familiarize yourself with your reel's drag system. A properly set drag is crucial for preventing line breaks and landing fish effectively.
  • Smooth Retrieves: Maintain a consistent and smooth retrieve to impart natural action to your lures and detect subtle bites.
  • Environmental Awareness: The DAIWA RS reel is suitable for various environments. Always be mindful of local fishing regulations and conditions.
