GPS RTK GNSS Data Controller

1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the operation and maintenance of the SOUTH H5 and H8 Data Collectors. These rugged and ergonomic devices are designed for precision data collection in GPS RTK GNSS surveying applications, assisting RTK equipment to collect and store observation data. Both models support multi-language switching for global usability.

2.1 SOUTH H5 Data Collector

The H5 model features a dual-energy battery system and is optimized for efficient data collection with its one-click evoke and collection functions. It boasts an ergonomic design for comfortable handling and a low-power large-scale display for clear visibility. The H5 runs on an Android version of the 'South Engineering Star' professional measurement software.

2.2 SOUTH H8 Data Collector

The H8 is a robust and ergonomic controller designed for demanding field surveying tasks. It operates on Android 12.0 with a powerful Qualcomm 8-core processor and features a 5.5-inch sunlight-readable display. The H8 is equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard and a high-capacity 9000mAh Li-Polymer battery.

4. Setup

4.1 Initial Charging

Before first use, fully charge your data collector. For the H8 model, the 9000mAh Li-Polymer battery supports QC 3.0 Super-Fast Charging and can be fully charged in approximately 5 hours. The H5 model uses a 3400mAh intelligent lithium battery.

4.2 Powering On/Off

  • To Power On: Press and hold the power button (usually red or marked with a power symbol) until the screen illuminates.
  • To Power Off: Press and hold the power button, then select 'Power Off' from the options that appear on the screen.

4.3 Software Installation & Language Switching

The device comes pre-installed with the 'South Engineering Star' professional measurement software. The device supports multi-language switching, which can typically be configured in the system settings under 'Language & Input'.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Basic Navigation

Use the touchscreen for direct interaction with the interface. For models with a physical keyboard (like H8), use the directional keys for menu navigation and the QWERTY keys for data entry.

5.2 Using 'South Engineering Star' Software

The 'South Engineering Star' software is designed for efficient surveying. It features a classic interface with optimized functions and algorithms, including expanded road design capabilities.

  • One-Click Evoke (H5): Configure frequently used applications to launch with a single button press.
  • One-Click Collection (H5): Set up data collection parameters for quick initiation of surveying tasks.
  • Project Management: Create, open, and manage surveying projects.
  • Survey Functions: Access various surveying modes and tools.
  • Data Input: Manually enter or edit data points and parameters.
  • Settings: Adjust software and device preferences.

5.3 Connectivity

Both H5 and H8 models support various connectivity options:

  • 4G: For cellular data communication.
  • Wi-Fi: Connect to wireless networks for internet access and data transfer.
  • Bluetooth®: For connecting to external devices such as RTK receivers or other peripherals. The H8 supports Ultra-Distance Bluetooth®.
  • NFC: For near-field communication (H8 model).

6. Maintenance

6.1 Battery Care

  • To maximize battery life, avoid fully discharging the battery frequently.
  • Store the device in a cool, dry place when not in use for extended periods.
  • The H8's 9000mAh battery provides over 30 hours of continuous operation.

6.2 Cleaning

  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean the screen and device body.
  • For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water or a mild screen cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals.
  • Ensure all ports are free from dust and debris.

6.3 Environmental Considerations

While the data collectors are designed to be rugged, avoid exposing them to extreme temperatures, direct sunlight for prolonged periods, or excessive moisture beyond their specified resistance.

7. Troubleshooting

7.1 Device Not Powering On

  • Ensure the battery is sufficiently charged. Connect the device to the charger and wait a few minutes before attempting to power on again.
  • Check the power button for any physical damage or obstruction.

7.2 Software Issues

  • If an application is unresponsive, try force-closing it through the Android system settings.
  • For persistent software problems, consider restarting the device.
  • Ensure the 'South Engineering Star' software is updated to the latest version.

7.3 Connectivity Problems

  • Wi-Fi/4G: Check network signal strength and ensure correct network settings.
  • Bluetooth: Ensure the external device is in pairing mode and within range. Try unpairing and re-pairing the device.
