3. Setup and Connection

3.1 Connecting for OBD2 Diagnostics

To perform OBD2 diagnostics, connect the KW870 to your vehicle's OBD2 port using the provided 16 Pin OBDII cable. The OBD2 port is typically located under the dashboard on the driver's side.

3.2 Connecting for Battery Testing

For battery testing, switch to the battery clip clamp. Connect the red clamp to the positive (+) terminal of the battery and the black clamp to the negative (-) terminal. Ensure a secure connection.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 General Navigation

Use the directional buttons (up, down, left, right) to navigate through menus. Press the "OK" button to confirm a selection and "ESC" to go back to the previous screen. The "I/M" button provides quick access to I/M Readiness status.

4.2 OBD2 Diagnostic Functions

The KW870 supports all 10 OBDII test modes for comprehensive engine system diagnostics:

  • Read Codes: Displays Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in the vehicle's computer.
  • Erase Codes: Clears DTCs from the vehicle's computer and turns off the Check Engine Light (MIL).
  • I/M Readiness: Checks the status of emission-related monitoring systems.
  • Data Stream: Displays live PCM data parameters in graphical and numerical formats.
  • Freeze Frame: Shows a snapshot of operating conditions at the time an emission-related fault occurred.
  • O2 Sensor Test: Retrieves O2 sensor monitor test results.
  • On-Board Monitoring Test: Retrieves test results for emission-related powertrain components and systems.
  • EVAP System Test: Initiates a test of the Evaporative Emission System.
  • Vehicle Information: Retrieves vehicle identification number (VIN), calibration ID (CIN), and calibration verification number (CVN).
  • DTC Lookup: Provides definitions for generic and manufacturer-specific trouble codes.

4.3 Battery Testing Functions

The KW870 provides three battery test modes to accurately assess battery health:

  • Battery Test: Analyzes the battery's overall health, including voltage, internal resistance, Cold Cranking Amps (CCA), and charge status.
  • Cranking Test: Tests the vehicle's starting system, including the starter motor.
  • Charging Test: Evaluates the vehicle's charging system, including the alternator.
  • Waveform Analysis: Displays real-time battery voltage in a waveform graph for detailed analysis.

4.4 Language Selection

The KW870 supports multiple languages. To change the language, navigate to the 'Languages' option in the main menu and select your preferred language from the list. Supported languages include English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Italian, and Polish.

5. Maintenance and Updates

5.1 Software Updates

The KW870 offers lifetime free software updates to ensure compatibility with new vehicles and improved functionality. To update the device:

  1. Press any button on the scanner BEFORE connecting it to your PC.
  2. Search online for the technical support website: www.itoscanner.com.
  3. Download the UPLINK OBD Upgrade Tool software and unzip it to your computer desktop.
  4. Open "Uplink" to upgrade and print data.

5.2 Cleaning

Clean the device with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.

6. Troubleshooting
