Adjusting Length: The detector's stem is adjustable from 42 to 52 inches. Loosen the locking collars, extend or retract the stem to your desired length, and then tighten the collars to secure it.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Power On/Off and Sensitivity
To power on the detector, rotate the POWER/GAIN knob clockwise. Continue rotating to increase the sensitivity (GAIN). Rotate counter-clockwise to decrease sensitivity or turn off the unit.
5.2 Detection Modes
The GX850 offers two main detection modes, selectable via the MODE button:
- ALL Metal Mode: Detects all types of metal. This mode is ideal for general searching and when you want to find any metallic object. In this mode, you can adjust the Ground Balance (GND BAL) from 0 to 99.9 to compensate for mineralized soil.
- DISC Mode (Discrimination Mode): Allows you to filter out unwanted metals (junk) and focus on specific targets. In this mode, you can change the discrimination level (THERSHOLD) from 10 to 40. Higher numbers typically reject more ferrous metals.
5.3 Ground Balance
Ground Balance is crucial for stable operation, especially in mineralized ground. In ALL Metal Mode, use the controls to adjust the Ground Balance setting from 0 to 99.9. Refer to the display for the current GND BAL value. Proper ground balance minimizes false signals caused by ground minerals.
5.4 Pinpoint Function
Once a target is detected, press the GG/PINPOINT button to narrow down its exact location. This function helps you precisely locate the target before digging, reducing the size of the excavation needed.
5.5 Audio and Visual Indicators
- LCD Display: Provides visual information such as signal strength, target ID, depth, battery indication, and current mode settings.
- Voice Recognition/Target DIS: The detector provides audio feedback, and the display shows target identification to help you determine the type of metal detected.
- Depth Indication: The display shows target depth using 4 levels of tone volume.
- Earphone Jack: Connect headphones to the 1.2-inch earphone jack for clearer audio signals and to avoid disturbing others.
5.6 Screen Light
Press the SCREEN LIGHT button to activate the LCD backlight for improved visibility in low-light conditions.
5.7 Waterproof Search Coil
The 13-inch DD search coil is IP68 waterproof, allowing for detection in shallow water, rivers, and beaches. Ensure the control unit is not submerged unless explicitly stated as waterproof for the entire unit.

6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: After each use, especially in sandy or muddy conditions, wipe down the detector with a damp cloth. The search coil can be rinsed with fresh water due to its IP68 rating, but avoid submerging the control unit unless it is specifically designed for full submersion.
- Battery Care: Always remove the 9V battery if the detector will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage. Recharge the battery as needed.
- Storage: Store the detector in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Disassemble the stem if necessary for compact storage.
- Cable Inspection: Periodically check all cables and connections for wear or damage.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No power | Battery drained or incorrectly installed | Check battery installation, replace or recharge battery. |
| Constant false signals | High sensitivity, mineralized ground, electrical interference | Reduce sensitivity (GAIN), perform ground balance, move away from power lines or other electronics. |
| "Error Can't GG" message | Ground balance issue or pinpointing error | Re-perform ground balance. Ensure the coil is stable when using pinpoint. |
| Poor detection depth | Low sensitivity, incorrect ground balance, small target size | Increase sensitivity (GAIN), ensure proper ground balance, sweep slowly. |
| No audio from headphones | Headphones not connected properly, faulty headphones, volume too low | Check headphone connection, test with different headphones, increase volume. |

9. User Tips
- Practice Makes Perfect: Start by burying a few known metal objects (coins, rings) in your backyard and practice detecting them. This helps you get familiar with the detector's responses and settings.
- Sweep Slowly: For best results, sweep the search coil slowly and steadily over the ground. Rushing can cause you to miss targets.
- Use Headphones: Headphones can help you hear faint signals that might be missed with the built-in speaker, especially in noisy environments.
- Adjust Sensitivity: If you experience excessive false signals, try lowering the sensitivity (GAIN). Conversely, if you're not finding targets, increase it.
- Proper Ground Balance: Always perform a ground balance procedure when moving to a new search area or if the ground conditions change significantly. This ensures accurate detection and reduces false signals from ground mineralization.
- Target Identification: Pay attention to both the audio tones and the visual target ID on the LCD screen to better identify potential finds and avoid digging up junk.
