5. Setup
5.1 Battery Installation
To avoid shock, injury, or damage to the equipment, remove all connections before opening the battery doors.
- Ensure both the Transmitter and Receiver are switched off.
- Locate and open the battery doors on both units.
- Install the batteries:
- Transmitter: Insert 3 x 1.5V AA (R6) batteries.
- Receiver: Insert 1 x 9V (6F22) battery.
- Close the battery doors securely.
Replace batteries when the low battery indicator flashes or if the receiver cannot be switched on.
6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Tracing Cables (Wire Tracking)
This function helps locate specific cables within a bundle.
- Power On Transmitter: Press the Power button or the "SCAN" button to activate the cable tracing functions. "SCAN" and "L1" will appear on the display, indicating readiness for analog tracing.
- Select Signal Type: Press the "Hz" button on the Transmitter to cycle through signal types:
- L1: Analog 1 Signals
- L2: Digital Signals
- L3: Analog 2 Signals
- Connect Cable to Transmitter: Plug the cable to be traced into the RJ45 jack on the Transmitter. For cables without connectors, use the provided alligator clips to connect the wire pairs or individual wires.
- Activate Receiver:
- Digital Signal Tracing (Audio): Press the MODE button on the Receiver once. The blue indicator will light up. Move the receiver tip near each cable; the loudest tone indicates the target cable.
- Analog Signal Tracing (Audio): Press the MODE button on the Receiver twice. The red indicator will light up. Move the receiver tip near each cable; the loudest tone indicates the target cable.
- Digital Signal Tracing (Vibration - ET613 only): Press the MODE button on the Receiver once. The blue indicator will flash. Move the receiver tip near each cable; the strongest vibration indicates the target cable.
- Adjust Sensitivity: Use the Volume Adjusting Wheel on the Receiver to fine-tune sensitivity. Decrease sensitivity for strong signals, increase for weak signals.
Figure 6.2: Adjusting the sensitivity on the Receiver. - Power Off: After tracing, press the MODE button on the Receiver for 3 seconds to power it off. Press the Power button on the Transmitter for 3 seconds to power it off.
6.2 Cable Testing (Intelligent Wiremap)
Never use the Cable Testing features on live circuits.
This function tests various cable types, including network cables (IEEE 10Base-T, EIA/TIA 568A, EIA/TIA 568B, AT&T258A, Token Ring), phone lines (2 and 4 lines), and other metallic connection cables.
- Power On Transmitter: Press the "TEST" button.
- Connect Cables: Connect the cable to be tested to both the Transmitter and Receiver.
- Observe Results: The Wiremap Indicator on the Transmitter's display will show lines moving from 1 to 8 continuously. If the cable is connected correctly, the corresponding lines will appear. Alternatively, observe the green LEDs on the Receiver; if lines are connected correctly, the number of green LEDs will match the moving numbers on the Transmitter's display.
6.3 PoE Voltage Testing
This function tests standard and non-standard PoE devices, including PoE voltage, power supply polarity, and power supply mode.
- Activate PoE Test Mode: Press the "V" button on the Transmitter twice. "Voltage" and "PoE" will appear on the display.
- Connect to PoE Device: Use a network cable to connect the Transmitter's PoE special interface to the PoE equipment.
- Read Results: The display will show the measured PoE voltage and polarity. Flashing numbers on the Wiremap Indicator indicate positive voltage lines.
6.4 Voltage Test
Never use the equipment to test AC voltage and other high-voltage circuits.
This function checks the positive and negative polarity of batteries or phone line voltage.
- Activate Voltage Test Mode: Press the "V" button on the Transmitter once. "Voltage" will appear on the display.
- Connect to Power Source: Plug the alligator clip provided into the RJ45 jack on the Transmitter. Connect the red clip to the positive terminal and the black clip to the negative terminal of the battery or phone line.
- Read Results: The LCD will display the voltage value. Flashing numbers indicate positive voltage on that cable.
6.5 Continuity Test
This function checks if a circuit is complete (current can pass through).
- Connect Cables: Plug the alligator clip provided into the Transmitter. Connect the alligator clip to the two ends of the cable to be tested.
- Activate Continuity Test: Switch on the Transmitter and press the "OHM" button.
- Read Results:
- "00" will appear on the display if the cable is good enough for current to pass through.
- "OL" will appear if the current cannot pass through (open circuit).
6.6 Remote Identification (Optional Accessory)
This function requires the optional Remote Identification Unit, which is not included in the standard package.
- Connect the cable to be identified to the Remote Identification Unit.
- Plug the other end of the cable into the Transmitter.
- The Remote Identity Number will be shown on the Transmitter's display.
7. Maintenance
7.1 Cleaning
To avoid damaging the equipment, do NOT submerge the equipment in water. Do not use abrasive cleaners, as they will damage the case. Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent only. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Dirt or moisture in the jacks can affect the measurement accuracy.
7.2 Auto Power Off
The equipment will automatically switch off if there is no function or button press for about 20 minutes to conserve battery life.
8. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Network Cable Tester, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- Device not powering on or erratic behavior: Check the battery levels. If the low battery indicator is flashing, replace the batteries in both the Transmitter (3x AA) and Receiver (1x 9V).
- No signal detected during cable tracing: Ensure the cable is properly connected to the Transmitter. Verify that the correct signal type (Analog or Digital) is selected. Adjust the Receiver's sensitivity using the Volume Adjusting Wheel.
- Cable testing (Wiremap) shows incorrect results: Ensure the cable is not connected to a live circuit. Check for proper connection between the Transmitter and Receiver.
- Does not measure cable distance: This device is designed for tracing, testing continuity, and identifying cable characteristics, not for measuring cable length or distance.
- Can it identify single wires or only pairs? The device can identify single wires when tracing in analog or digital mode. For wiremap testing, it checks the continuity and pairing of wires within a cable.
9. User Tips
- Optimize Tracing: When receiving a strong signal, reduce the Receiver's sensitivity to pinpoint the cable more accurately. For weak signals, increase sensitivity.
- Work in Dark Environments: Utilize the built-in LED flashlight on the Receiver to illuminate your workspace, making detection and searching more convenient.
- Consider ET613 for Noisy Areas: If working in environments with significant background noise, the ET613 model's vibration indication feature can be particularly useful for silent tracing.
- Always Double-Check: Before performing any test, especially continuity or wiremap, ensure the cables are not connected to any active power source to prevent damage to the device or injury.
