5. Setup and Installation

Careful installation is crucial for the proper functioning and longevity of your ESC. Follow these steps:

  1. Mounting the ESC

The HAKRC 8B35A ESC features a 20mm x 20mm mounting hole pattern. Use the provided yellow rubber grommets/spacers to isolate the ESC from vibrations and prevent short circuits with the frame. Ensure the ESC is securely mounted, typically as part of a flight stack with a compatible flight controller.

  2. Wiring Connections

Refer to the wiring diagram below for proper connections. Solder the main power wires (red for positive, blue for negative) to the designated '+' and '-' pads. Connect the four motor wires (M1, M2, M3, M4) to your brushless motors. Use the included signal cable to connect the ESC to your flight controller's corresponding signal and telemetry pads. The capacitor should be soldered to the main battery pads for filtering power noise.

Figure 4: Wiring diagram showing motor, power, and signal connections.
    • Power Input: Connect your battery's positive (+) and negative (-) leads to the large pads marked '+' and '-' on the ESC.
    • Motor Connections: Solder motor wires to M1, M2, M3, M4 pads. The order may need adjustment in software for correct motor direction.
    • Signal/Telemetry: Use the provided cable to connect the ESC's signal pads (1, 2, 3, 4) and telemetry (CURR) to your flight controller. The '+' and '-' pads on the signal connector provide 5V and GND for the flight controller.
    • Capacitor: Solder the included electrolytic capacitor to the main battery pads, ensuring correct polarity (long lead is positive).

6. Operating Instructions

Once the ESC is physically installed and wired, configure it using appropriate software:

  1. Firmware Configuration

The HAKRC 8B35A ESC comes pre-flashed with BLHeli_S firmware (G_ H_ 20- Rev. 16.7- Multi). Connect your flight controller to a computer and use the BLHeliSuite32 or Betaflight Configurator (if your FC supports passthrough) to access and configure the ESCs. You can adjust settings such as motor direction, Damped Light mode, and various timing options.

  2. Protocol Selection

This ESC supports a wide range of protocols including PWM, Oneshot125, Oneshot42, Multishot, Dshot150, Dshot300, and Dshot600. For optimal performance and reliability, Dshot600 is generally recommended when supported by your flight controller.

  3. Motor Direction

After initial setup, verify motor direction in your flight controller's software (e.g., Betaflight Motors tab). If a motor spins in the wrong direction, reverse it in the BLHeliSuite32 software or by swapping any two motor wires.

7. Maintenance

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and reliability of your ESC:

  • Regular Inspection: Periodically check for loose solder joints, damaged wires, or signs of physical damage.
  • Cleaning: Keep the ESC free from dust, dirt, and debris. Use a soft brush or compressed air for cleaning. Avoid using liquids.
  • Heat Management: Ensure the ESC has adequate airflow during operation. Avoid covering it with excessive tape or components that restrict cooling.
  • Firmware Updates: Check for new BLHeli_S firmware versions periodically. Updating can improve performance and fix bugs.

8. Troubleshooting

Here are some common issues and their potential solutions:

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Motor not spinning Loose motor wire, incorrect signal connection, motor desync, damaged motor/ESC. Check all motor solder joints. Verify signal cable connection to FC. Try different motor timing in BLHeliSuite. Test with a different motor.
ESC overheating Insufficient airflow, motor desync, over-propped, damaged motor. Ensure proper ventilation. Check motor timing. Use appropriate propellers for your motors. Inspect motors for damage.
Random motor twitching/stuttering Motor desync, electrical noise, loose connection. Increase motor timing in BLHeliSuite. Ensure capacitor is properly installed. Check all power and signal connections.
No power to flight controller Incorrect power connection, damaged 5V regulator on ESC. Verify main battery connection and signal cable 5V/GND connections. Check for short circuits.

9. User Tips

  • Solder Quality: Always ensure clean and strong solder joints for all connections, especially power and motor wires, to prevent intermittent issues or failures.
  • Capacitor Installation: Do not skip installing the included electrolytic capacitor. It helps filter electrical noise from the battery, protecting the ESC and other sensitive electronics.
  • Motor Wire Length: Keep motor wires as short as possible to minimize electrical interference and improve efficiency.
  • Testing: Before flying, always perform a bench test with propellers removed to verify motor direction and smooth operation.
