Cautions in Use:

  • Do not disassemble: Attempting to disassemble the battery can cause damage, short circuits, or expose you to hazardous materials.
  • Do not dispose of in fire: Li-ion batteries can explode or catch fire if exposed to high heat or flames.
  • Avoid over-discharge/overcharge: Use only approved chargers and avoid leaving the battery connected to a charger indefinitely after it's full. Do not attempt to charge a severely depleted battery that shows signs of damage.
  • Avoid hot/humid locations: Store and use the battery in a cool, dry environment. High temperatures and humidity can degrade battery performance and safety.
  • Do not short-circuit the terminals: Avoid contact between the battery terminals and metal objects, which can cause short circuits, heat generation, and potential fire.
  • Proper disposal: This battery must be recycled or disposed of properly. Do not discard with household waste. Check local regulations for recycling facilities, as they may not exist in all areas.

5. Setup

5.1. Initial Charge

Before first use, fully charge the battery. This helps to condition the battery for optimal performance and longevity.

5.2. Installing the Battery

  1. Ensure your Baofeng UV-17 series radio is turned off.
  2. Align the battery with the battery compartment on the back of the radio.
  3. Slide the battery into place until it clicks securely. Ensure there is no gap between the battery and the radio body.

5.3. Charging the Battery

The BL-17UV battery features a convenient USB-C charging port. You can charge it directly or while attached to the radio.

  1. Connect a compatible USB-C charging cable to the battery's USB-C port.
  2. Connect the other end of the cable to a suitable USB power source (e.g., a wall adapter, computer USB port, or power bank).
  3. The charging indicator on the battery (if present) or radio will typically show the charging status. Refer to your radio's manual for specific charging indicators.
  4. Once fully charged, disconnect the charging cable.

6. Operating the Battery

Once installed and charged, the battery powers your Baofeng UV-17 series radio. Always monitor the radio's battery level indicator to avoid unexpected power loss during critical communications.

  • Regular Charging: For best performance, charge the battery regularly and avoid letting it completely drain before recharging.
  • Temperature: Operate the battery within the recommended temperature range specified in your radio's manual. Extreme cold or heat can affect battery life and performance.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Periodically clean the battery terminals and the radio's battery contacts with a clean, dry cloth to ensure good electrical connection.
  • Storage: If storing the battery for an extended period, charge it to approximately 50-70% capacity and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid storing fully charged or fully depleted batteries for long periods.
  • Inspection: Regularly inspect the battery for any signs of damage, swelling, or leakage. Discontinue use immediately if any damage is observed.

8. Troubleshooting

8.1. Battery Not Charging

  • Ensure the USB-C cable is securely connected to both the battery and the power source.
  • Verify that the USB power source is functional. Try a different USB port or wall adapter.
  • Check the battery terminals and radio contacts for dirt or obstructions.
  • If charging via the radio, ensure the radio is properly seated in its charging cradle (if applicable) or the USB-C port on the radio is clean.

8.2. Short Battery Life

  • Ensure the battery is fully charged before use.
  • Check if the radio's power saving features are enabled (refer to your radio's manual).
  • Extreme temperatures can reduce battery performance; ensure you are operating within recommended temperature ranges.
  • If the battery is old or has been used extensively, its capacity may have degraded, and replacement may be necessary.

8.3. Battery Not Fitting Correctly

  • Ensure you have the correct battery model (BL-17UV) for your specific Baofeng UV-17 series radio.
  • Check for any obstructions in the battery compartment of the radio.

9. User Tips

  • Consider purchasing a spare battery for extended use, especially during outdoor activities or emergencies.
  • Always carry a compatible USB-C cable and a portable power bank for on-the-go charging.
  • For optimal battery health, avoid frequently draining the battery completely. Partial discharges and more frequent charges are generally better for Li-ion batteries.

10. Warranty and Support

For warranty information and technical support, please refer to the documentation provided with your original Baofeng radio or contact the authorized Baofeng dealer or service center where you purchased the battery. Keep your proof of purchase for warranty claims.
