Introduction

The Neoteck 0.005g/100g Professional Turntable Stylus Force Gauge is a high-precision instrument designed for accurately measuring and adjusting the tracking force of your turntable's phono cartridge. Proper stylus force is crucial for optimal sound quality and to prevent premature wear of your records and stylus. This gauge is suitable for MM/MC/MI and piezoelectric acoustical pickups. Its non-magnetic design ensures reliable readings without magnetic field interference.

Setup

  1. Install Batteries: Open the battery compartment on the back of the gauge and insert 2 AAA batteries, observing the correct polarity.
  2. Placement: Place the stylus force gauge on a stable, level, and non-vibrating surface, ideally the platter of your turntable or a surface at the same height as your turntable's platter.
  3. Power On: Press the Power button (usually marked with a power symbol) to turn on the device. The LCD backlight will illuminate.
  4. Tare (Zero) the Scale: If the display does not show "0.000g" after powering on, press the T (Tare) button to zero the scale. Ensure nothing is on the measuring platform when taring.

Operating Instructions

  1. Power On/Off: Press the Power button to turn the gauge on or off.
  2. Select Unit: Press the M (Mode) button repeatedly to cycle through the available measurement units: grams (g), ounces (oz), troy ounces (ozt), pennyweights (dwt), carats (ct), grains (gn), and taels (TL). Select 'g' for stylus force measurement.
  3. Tare Function: If you need to zero the scale at any point, press the T (Tare) button. This is useful if you place a small tray on the platform and want to exclude its weight from the measurement.
  4. Measure Stylus Force:
    • With the gauge powered on and tared to "0.000g", carefully lower your turntable's tonearm so that the stylus rests gently on the center of the measuring platform.
    • Ensure the stylus is positioned correctly in the small groove or indentation on the platform.
    • Read the displayed value. This is your current stylus tracking force.
    • Adjust your tonearm's counterweight or anti-skate settings as needed, re-measuring after each adjustment until the desired force is achieved.
  5. Automatic Shutdown: The gauge features an automatic shutdown function to conserve battery life. The shutdown time can be configured between 0 and 300 seconds. A setting of 0 seconds will disable the auto-off feature. (Specific steps for setting auto-off are typically found in the paper manual; refer to it for detailed instructions if needed.)

Calibration

To ensure the highest accuracy, it is recommended to calibrate the stylus force gauge periodically, especially if you suspect inaccurate readings or after long periods of non-use. Use the included 20g calibration weight.

  1. Place the gauge on a stable, level surface.
  2. Press the Power button to turn on the scale.
  3. Press and hold the M (Mode) button until "CAL" appears on the display, then release the button.
  4. Press the M button again. The display will flash "20.000".
  5. Carefully place the 20g calibration weight exactly in the center of the measuring platform.
  6. Wait for the display to show "PASS" and then "20.000". This indicates successful calibration.
  7. Remove the calibration weight from the platform. The scale is now calibrated and ready for use.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the gauge. Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse the device in water.
  • Storage: Store the gauge in its protective case when not in use to prevent dust and damage. Keep it in a cool, dry place.
  • Battery Care: If the gauge will not be used for an extended period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and potential damage to the device.
  • Handling: Handle the gauge with care. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to strong impacts, as this can affect its accuracy.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Display shows "Lo"Low battery power.Replace the 2 AAA batteries.
Display shows "O-Ld"Overload. The weight on the platform exceeds 100g.Remove the excess weight immediately to prevent damage.
Inaccurate readings
  • Gauge not on a stable, level surface.
  • Gauge needs calibration.
  • Measuring platform is dirty or obstructed.
  • Magnetic interference (unlikely with non-magnetic platform, but check surroundings).
  • Ensure the gauge is on a stable, level surface.
  • Perform a calibration using the 20g weight (refer to "Calibration" section).
  • Clean the measuring platform gently.
  • Move the gauge away from strong magnetic fields.
Gauge does not turn on
  • Dead or incorrectly installed batteries.
  • Power button malfunction.
  • Check battery installation and replace with fresh batteries.
  • If problem persists, contact customer support.

User Tips

  • Always ensure your turntable is perfectly level before adjusting tonearm settings or measuring stylus force.
  • For consistent readings, perform measurements on the turntable platter itself, or at the exact height of the platter.
  • Calibrate your gauge regularly, especially if it has been stored for a while or if you suspect any discrepancies in readings.
  • Refer to your phono cartridge manufacturer's recommended tracking force for optimal performance and stylus longevity.
