Tuya ZigBee Smart Smoke Detector User Manual

Model: DY-YG400A | Brand: Tuya

1. Introduction

The Tuya ZigBee Smart Smoke Detector is an intelligent photoelectric smoke detector designed for home security and fire protection. Utilizing a low-power MCU design, it provides real-time monitoring of smoke presence. This device is an early warning system, capable of detecting visible smoke particles (indicative of a smoldering fire) faster than traditional ionization smoke detectors. Upon detection of smoke or fire hazards, the detector activates a loud 85dB alarm and triggers a red LED indicator light, simultaneously sending notifications to your mobile application. It is important to note that this device is an early warning tool and cannot sense gas, heat, or flame, nor can it prevent or extinguish a fire.

Smoke detectors should be strategically installed in various areas of your home, including guest rooms, living rooms, storage areas, and basements, to ensure comprehensive coverage where fire hazards may arise.

Key Features:

  • Smart Smoke Detection: Efficiently detects smoke and fire for enhanced home safety.
  • 85dB Alarm Sound: Built-in loud alarm ensures timely response to potential fire incidents.
  • Remote Monitoring: Observe smoke dynamics in real-time and receive mobile app notifications via the Smart Life/Tuya app, providing peace of mind even when away from home.
  • High Sensitivity: Features an exclusive smoke intelligent algorithm for high sensitivity, minimizing false alarms and offering strong anti-interference capabilities.
  • Low Voltage Reminder: Automatically notifies you via the app when battery levels are low, ensuring continuous protection.
  • Wide Application: Suitable for homes, factories, schools, shops, offices, villas, and residential areas.
  • Smart Home Integration: Compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Home for seamless integration into your smart ecosystem.
  • RoHS Certified: Guarantees adherence to safety and quality standards.

2. Important Notes

  • ZigBee Hub Required: This product is a ZigBee version. A Tuya ZigBee gateway hub is essential for its operation. Without a compatible ZigBee hub, this smoke detector will not function.
  • Stable Network Environment: Ensure the installation location has a stable network environment for optimal performance and reliable notifications.
  • New Battery for First Connection: When connecting to the internet for the first time, it is recommended to use new batteries to ensure sufficient power for the pairing process.
  • No Real Fire Testing: For safety reasons, do not use real fire to test the detector. Use the built-in test function or controlled smoke sources (e.g., cotton rope) as described in the 'Operating Instructions' section.

5. Installation

Proper installation is crucial for the effective operation of your smoke detector. Follow these guidelines:

Ceiling Installation:

Smoke, heat, and combustion products typically spread laterally when they rise to the ceiling. Therefore, installing the smoke detector on the ceiling is the preferred location for early detection.

  • Maintain a distance of at least 30cm from lamps or decorative objects.
  • Ensure it is at least 15cm away from walls and corners.
  • If a hall exceeds 12 meters in length, install detectors at both ends.

Inclined Ceiling Installation:

If your ceiling is sloped, install the detector along the ceiling, maintaining a distance of 90cm from the horizontal direction at the highest point.

6. Setup and Pairing

Follow these steps to set up and pair your smoke detector with the Smart Life/Tuya app:

6.1. Battery Installation:

  1. Gently open the battery compartment cover on the back of the detector.
  2. Insert two AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely. The indicator light will turn ON briefly and then OFF.

6.2. App Download and Gateway Setup:

  1. Download the Smart Life or Tuya Smart app from your device's app store (Google Play for Android, App Store for iOS). You can also scan the QR code provided in the manual or product images.
  2. Register and log in to the app using your mobile phone number.
  3. On the 'My Home' page, tap '+' or 'Add Device'.
  4. Select 'Gateway' and then choose 'Gateway (Zigbee)' or 'Wireless Gateway' to add your ZigBee hub.

6.3. Pairing the Smoke Detector:

  1. Once your ZigBee gateway is successfully added to the app, tap on the gateway device.
  2. Select 'Add sub-device'.
  3. Using a pin (like a SIM ejector tool), press the RESET button on the smoke detector for approximately 5 seconds until the indicator light flashes quickly. This puts the detector into pairing mode.
  4. The app will begin searching for the device. The adding process may take about 25 seconds.
  5. When the indicator light on the detector remains ON continuously, the app should display the smoke detector. Tap 'DONE' to complete the pairing process.

7. Operating Instructions

7.1. Testing the Detector:

Regular testing ensures your smoke detector is functioning correctly.

  • Manual Test: Long press the TEST button on the detector. The buzzer will sound 'DI-DI-DI', the app will receive a 'Smoke detected' notification, and the smoke detector will alarm. Release the TEST button, and the app should display 'Normal'.
  • Smoke Test: To perform a smoke test, burn a cotton rope to produce smoke and direct it towards the detector. When the detector emits a beeping alarm, press the test/mute button on the panel to stop the beeping.

Warning: Do not use real fire for testing the detector.

7.2. Mute Function:

The mute function is used to temporarily silence the alarm in situations where there is no actual fire hazard (e.g., cooking smoke).

  • Press the test/mute button on the detector to reduce sensitivity and temporarily stop unnecessary alarms.
  • Ensure there is no real fire hazard before using the mute function. Do not block or otherwise prohibit the detector's function during known non-fire alarms.

8. Troubleshooting

If your smoke detector is not functioning as expected, refer to the following table and common issues:

8.1. Status Indicators and Alarms:

StatusIndicatorAlarm
Normal StateRed LED flashes once every 40 secondsNone
Low BatteryApp pushes low battery alert; LED goes out after 15 seconds in sleep/test stateNone
Test StatusRed LED is always ONRapid ticking sound
Alarm StatusRed LED is always ONRapid ticking sound
Network ConfigurationGreen LED flashes once per 1 secondNone

8.2. Common Issues and Solutions:

  • Detector not alarming or connecting:
    • Battery: Check if the battery has reached its effective service life. Replace batteries promptly if they are low.
    • Dust/Oil: If a fault occurs due to dust, oil, or other debris, clean the detector correctly according to maintenance guidelines.
    • Installation: Ensure the detector is correctly rotated and securely installed on its base.
    • Network Range: If there are no notifications when alarming, verify that the installation location and the ZigBee gateway/router are within a 10-meter range for optimal signal strength.
  • Difficulty connecting to the app:
    • Confirm you have a Tuya ZigBee gateway hub. This detector requires a hub to function.
    • Ensure your mobile device's Bluetooth is turned on during the pairing process.
    • Follow the pairing steps precisely, especially pressing the RESET button for 5 seconds until the light flashes quickly.
    • Try using new batteries for the initial connection.

9. User Tips

  • Gateway is Key: Remember, this is a ZigBee device. It absolutely requires a Tuya ZigBee gateway hub to connect to your Smart Life/Tuya app and function. It cannot connect directly to Wi-Fi.
  • Initial Pairing: For the smoothest first-time connection, ensure you have fresh batteries installed and your phone's Bluetooth is enabled when adding the sub-device through the gateway.
  • Testing Safely: Never use an open flame to test your smoke detector. Use the designated test button or a safe, controlled smoke source like a smoldering cotton rope.
  • Network Stability: A stable network connection between your ZigBee gateway and your home Wi-Fi is crucial for receiving timely alerts.
