2. Setup Instructions

The NETUM L-Series scanners are designed for plug-and-play functionality, requiring no driver installation for basic operation.

2.1. Connection Types

Your scanner model determines the available connection methods:

  • NT-L5 (Wired): Connects directly via a USB cable.
  • NT-L8 (2.4G Wireless): Offers 2.4GHz wireless connection via a mini USB receiver and can also be used with a USB cable.
  • L8BL-W (Bluetooth Wireless): Provides three connection options: Bluetooth, 2.4GHz wireless via a mini USB receiver, and USB cable.

2.2. Initial Setup

  1. Connect the Scanner:
    • For Wired (NT-L5): Plug the USB cable into the scanner and then into an available USB port on your computer.
    • For 2.4G Wireless (NT-L8, L8BL-W): Insert the mini USB receiver into an available USB port on your computer. The scanner should automatically pair.
    • For Bluetooth (L8BL-W): Ensure the scanner is charged. Activate Bluetooth on your host device (PC, laptop, smartphone, tablet). Scan the Bluetooth pairing barcode (refer to your scanner's specific quick start guide for this barcode). Select the scanner from your device's Bluetooth settings to pair.
  2. Power On: If applicable for wireless models, ensure the scanner is powered on.
  3. Test Scan: Open a text editor (e.g., Notepad, Word) or any application where you want to input scanned data. Scan a test barcode. The data should appear on your screen.

2.3. Compatibility

The L-Series scanners are compatible with a wide range of operating systems and devices:

  • Operating Systems: Windows (7, 8, 10, XP), Linux, Mac OS, iOS, Android.
  • Devices: PC, Laptops, Smartphones, Tablets, POS systems.

Note: While compatible with many devices, direct connection to iPads or phones via USB cable is generally not supported for data transfer; Bluetooth is the preferred method for mobile devices.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1. Scanning Modes

The scanner supports multiple scanning modes to suit different operational needs:

  • Key Trigger Mode: Press the trigger button to initiate a scan.
  • Continuous Scan Mode: The scanner continuously emits a scan beam, reading barcodes as they pass through the field of view without needing to press the trigger for each scan.
  • Auto-induction Mode: The scanner automatically detects a barcode in its field of view and initiates a scan.

3.2. Barcode Compatibility

The L-Series scanners are equipped with a CMOS sensor and 32-bit decoding chip, enabling them to read a wide variety of 1D and 2D barcodes, even those that are frayed, folded, profiled, colored, or displayed on screens.

  • 1D Barcodes: UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-8, EAN-13, Code 39, Code 93, Code 32, Code39(ASCII), Industrial 2 of 5, Interleave 2 of 5, Matrix 2 of 5, NW7, Code 128, UCC/EAN128, USD-8, MSI/Plessey, UK/Plessey, GS1 DataBar, Postal Code.
  • 2D Barcodes: PDF417, Micro PDF417, Data Matrix, QR Code, Micro QR, Aztec, MaxiCode.

3.3. Data Upload Modes (Wireless Models)

Wireless models (NT-L8, L8BL-W) offer two data upload modes:

  • Instant Upload Mode: Scanned data is immediately transmitted to the connected device.
  • Storage Mode: Scanned data is stored in the scanner's internal memory (256 KB, up to 2600 codes) and can be uploaded later. This is useful when out of range or connection. To upload stored data, scan the "Manual data upload" barcode (found in the quick start guide or programming manual).

4. Maintenance

4.1. Cleaning

To maintain optimal performance, keep the scanner clean:

  • Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the exterior of the scanner.
  • For the scanning window, use a soft, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with a mild glass cleaner. Avoid abrasive materials or harsh chemicals.

4.2. Battery (Wireless Models)

Wireless models feature a long-life rechargeable battery:

  • NT-L8: Built-in 1800mAh Li-Ion battery.
  • L8BL-W: Built-in 2000mAh Li-Ion battery.

A full charge can provide continuous scanning for up to 100,000 times. Recharge the battery using the provided USB cable when the low battery indicator appears.

4.3. Durability

The scanner is constructed from durable ABS+PC material and features anti-shock silicone, passing a drop test of 5 feet (1.5 meters) to ensure resilience in various working environments.

5. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your scanner, refer to the following common problems and solutions:

  • Some barcodes cannot be read:
    1. Dirty or Unclear Barcodes: Ensure the barcode is clean, clear, and not excessively damaged.
    2. Digital Barcodes: While the CMOS sensor is capable, extremely low-contrast or poorly displayed digital barcodes might be challenging.
    3. Specific Barcode Types Disabled: Some less common barcode types (e.g., MaxiCode, Interleave 2 of 5) might be disabled by default. Refer to the scanner's programming manual for command barcodes to enable them. If you are unsure of the barcode type, contact customer support.
  • Data not sent to computer:
    1. Inventory Mode: If the scanner is in storage mode (inventory mode), it will store scans internally instead of transmitting them. Scan the "Manual data upload" barcode (from your programming manual) to send the stored data to your connected device.
    2. Connection Issues: For wireless models, ensure the USB receiver is properly plugged in or Bluetooth is correctly paired. Check if the scanner is within range (up to 25m/85ft with obstacles, 75m/250ft in barrier-free environments for 2.4G wireless).
  • Messy code problem with foreign languages:
    1. The default language setting is English. If you are scanning barcodes with characters from other languages and experience garbled output, you may need to change the scanner's language setting. Refer to the "Language Setting" chapter in your programming manual for instructions.
  • Scanner not turning on/charging:
    1. Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the scanner and a power source (for charging) or computer (for wired operation).
    2. For wireless models, check the battery level. If completely drained, it may take a few minutes to show charging status.
