5. Setup Instructions
5.1 Power Connection
Connect the provided power adapter to the POWER INTERFACE on the rear of the mixer and then to a suitable power outlet. Ensure the POWER SWITCH is in the 'OFF' position before connecting. The mixer supports various mains voltages depending on your region:
- USA/Canada: ~120V AC, 60 Hz
- U.K./Australia: ~240V AC, 50 Hz
- China: ~220V AC, 50 Hz
Please verify the correct plug type and voltage for your region. The mixer operates internally at 12V DC.
5.2 Microphone and Line Input Connection
Connect microphones or line-level instruments to the MIC / LINE inputs. For condenser microphones, activate the 48V PHANTOM switch. For high-level input sources, press the PAD switch to reduce the input signal by 26dB and prevent clipping.

6. Operating Instructions
6.1 Basic Operation
- Turn on the mixer using the POWER SWITCH.
- Adjust the GAIN knob for each input channel to achieve an optimal signal level without clipping (the PEAK LED should only flash occasionally).
- Use the HIGH, MID, and LOW EQ knobs to shape the tone of each channel.
- Adjust individual channel LEVEL knobs to balance the mix.
- Control the overall output volume with the STEREO fader.
6.2 Using DSP Effects
The TKL Z4 mixer includes 99 digital signal processing (DSP) effects:
- 00-39: Reverb
- 40-49: Delay
- 50-59: Pingpong Delay
- 60-69: Flanger
- 70-79: Key Echo
- 80-84: Chorus+Echo
- 85-89: Auto Wah+Echo
- 90-93: Voice Changer
- 94-96: Tremolo
- 97-99: Rotary Speaker
To apply effects:
- Turn the PROGRAM knob to select the desired effect number (00-99). The selected number will appear on the DSP display.
- Adjust the FX SEND knob on each channel to send the desired amount of that channel's signal to the effects processor.
- Use the PARAMETER knob to fine-tune the selected effect (e.g., decay time for reverb, delay time for delay).
Figure 7: DSP effects selection.
6.3 Equalization
Each channel features a 3-band EQ:
- HIGH: Adjusts frequencies around 10kHz.
- MID: Adjusts frequencies around 2.5kHz.
- LOW: Adjusts frequencies around 80Hz.
Figure 8: Equalization controls.
6.4 Low Cut Function
The HPF (High-Pass Filter) or Low Cut switch on each MIC/LINE channel attenuates frequencies below 80Hz. This is useful for reducing unwanted low-frequency rumble, stage noise, or microphone handling noise.

7. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the mixer's surface. Do not use liquid cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the mixer in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Cable Care: Always grasp the plug, not the cable, when disconnecting. Avoid bending or crimping cables.
- Ventilation: Ensure the ventilation openings are not blocked to prevent overheating.
8. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No sound output | Incorrect volume levels, incorrect connections, power issue. | Check all GAIN, LEVEL, and STEREO fader settings. Ensure speakers/headphones are connected correctly and powered on. Verify power adapter is securely connected. |
| Microphone not working | 48V Phantom power not activated (for condenser mics), incorrect input gain, faulty microphone/cable. | Activate 48V PHANTOM switch for condenser microphones. Adjust GAIN knob. Test with a different microphone or cable. |
| Distorted audio | Input signal too high, output signal too high. | Reduce GAIN for the input channel. Press the PAD switch if the input source is very loud. Lower channel LEVEL or STEREO fader. |
| Bluetooth not connecting | Mixer not in Bluetooth mode, device too far, interference. | Ensure mixer is in 'BLUE' mode. Move device closer to the mixer. Restart both devices. |
| USB connection to computer not working | Incorrect USB cable, computer driver issue, incorrect audio settings on computer. | Use a high-quality USB cable. Check computer's sound settings to ensure the mixer is selected as input/output device. Restart computer and mixer. |
| SD card/USB drive not playing | Unsupported file format, incorrect drive format, drive not inserted correctly. | Ensure audio files are MP3 format. Format the drive to FAT32. Reinsert the drive securely. |
| Echo/effects not working | Effect not selected, FX SEND knob too low. | Select an effect using the PROGRAM knob. Increase the FX SEND knob on the desired channel. |

10. User Tips
- Power Voltage: Always confirm the power supply voltage and plug type are compatible with your region before connecting. The mixer itself operates on 12V DC, but the external adapter handles the AC conversion.
- Auxiliary Input: The 3/4 RCA inputs are perfect for connecting mobile phones or other devices via an AUX cable for background music or additional audio sources.
- Computer Connectivity: If experiencing issues with computer connection (e.g., with a MacBook), ensure your operating system's audio input/output settings are correctly configured to recognize the mixer. Sometimes, a simple restart of both devices can resolve connection problems.
- SD Card Recording: While the mixer supports SD card playback via a USB card reader, direct recording to an SD card is not explicitly stated as a feature. For recording, use the USB connection to a computer with appropriate recording software.
- Active Speakers: The TKL Z4 audio mixer is compatible with active (powered) speakers. Connect them to the L STEREO OUT R (XLR) outputs.
