1. Introduction

The UNI-T UT387 series wall scanners are advanced tools designed to detect various objects hidden behind walls, ceilings, and floors. This series includes models UT387E, UT387S, and UT387LM, each offering a unique set of features tailored for home renovation, improvement, and DIY projects.

These instruments can detect metals (such as rebar and copper pipes), live AC cables, and foreign objects like wood studs. The UT387S and UT387LM models also incorporate laser distance measurement and wood moisture detection capabilities. Key features include a 2.4-inch color screen for clear data display, real-time voice broadcast of measurement results, and storage for up to 30 sets of historical data for convenient review. The devices are designed with 1-meter anti-fall protection and a plush back pad for steady movement and reduced error during operation.

2. Safety Information

Please read and understand all safety warnings before using the device to prevent injury or damage.

  • Electrical Safety: Do not rely solely on this instrument to determine the presence of live wires. Always verify using construction drawings or other reliable methods. Always disconnect power, water, and gas supplies before drilling or nailing into walls.
  • Environmental Conditions: Avoid use in damp environments, areas with strong electromagnetic fields, or locations subject to rapid temperature fluctuations.
  • Personal Safety: Avoid wearing metallic jewelry, as it may interfere with detection accuracy.

Power On/Off:

Press and hold the power button (usually marked with a power symbol) to turn the device on or off.

Initial Calibration:

Upon powering on or switching detection modes, the device may perform an automatic calibration. Ensure the device is held in the air, away from any objects, during this process for accurate results.

5. Operating Instructions

General Operation:

  1. Press the power button to turn on the device.
  2. Press the '+' button (or appropriate function key) to select the desired detection mode.
  3. Place the device flush against the surface to be tested and move it slowly and uniformly across the area.
  4. Monitor the screen for signal strength, object type, and depth indications.
  5. The device must remain fully flush against the surface throughout detection; do not lift it during operation.

Detection Modes:

  • Metal Detection: Calibrate in a metal-free environment. The device identifies ferrous metals (e.g., rebar) and non-ferrous metals (e.g., copper pipes). It emits rapid audible alerts when both metal and AC current are detected simultaneously. Maximum detection depth for ferrous metals is 100mm, and for non-ferrous metals is 80mm.
  • AC Signal Detection (Live Wires): Detects live AC wires up to 50mm deep. The device will indicate the presence of AC voltage.
  • Foreign Object Detection (Wood Studs, Cables): Press the '+' button briefly to calibrate after positioning the device vertically against the wall. Move slowly in one direction. The center icon illumination indicates the target's center (e.g., wood studs, cables). Wood detection depth is 38mm.

Laser Distance Measurement (UT387LM/S only):

These models can measure distances up to 40m. Refer to the on-screen interface for specific laser measurement functions, including single, continuous, and area measurements, as well as Pythagorean calculations.

Wood Moisture Measurement (UT387S only):

The UT387S model can measure wood moisture content between 6% and 40%. Use the integrated probe for this function.

Data Storage:

All models can store up to 30 sets of measurement data for convenient record query.

6. Maintenance

Cleaning:

Clean the device using a soft cloth dampened with clean water only. Do not use corrosive solvents.

Optical Lens Care:

Gently wipe the optical lens (laser aperture) with a clean, soft cloth or cotton swab.

Storage:

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or extreme cold/heat. Store the device in a dry environment.

General:

Do not disassemble the instrument yourself to prevent damage or laser-related injury.

7. Troubleshooting

Unstable Detection Results:

  • Verify that the environment is dry and free from strong electromagnetic interference.
  • Perform manual calibration again (press the '+' button briefly).
  • Avoid use on hollow-wall cavities or uncured paint surfaces.

Unable to Identify Metal Type or Depth:

  • Ensure calibration is performed in a metal-free environment.
  • Depth readings are for reference only and may vary depending on material composition, object shape, and spatial distribution.
  • Detection of fine-gauge wires or non-ferrous metals may be limited.

No Voice Prompt:

  • Check whether voice prompts have been disabled in the settings.
  • Confirm sufficient battery charge.
