3. Setup

3.1 Package Contents

Before starting, ensure all components are present. The package typically includes:

  • 73B Welding Pen (1pc)
  • Copper Wire with Connector (1pc, optional, depending on version)
  • 1.5mm wrench for dismounting welding needles
  • Key for adjustment of welding pressure
  • 3mm screwdriver

3.2 Connecting the Welding Pen

  1. Ensure your spot welding machine (e.g., 737G+, 737DH, 709AD+) is turned off and unplugged.
  2. Identify the correct connector type (O-shaped or U-shaped) on your welding pen's copper wire.
  3. Connect the copper wire from the 73B welding pen to the output terminals of your spot welding machine. Ensure a secure connection to maintain good conductivity.
  4. Plug the DC wire (65cm length) from the welding pen into the 2.5 port on your spot welding machine for automatic welding function.

3.3 Adjusting Welding Needle Distance

The distance between the welding needles can be adjusted from 3mm to 7mm to suit different welding tasks and battery sizes (e.g., 18650, 26650, 32650 lithium iron phosphate batteries).

  1. Use the provided 3mm screwdriver to loosen the screws holding the welding needles.
  2. Adjust the needles to the desired distance.
  3. Tighten the screws to secure the needles in place.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Powering On and Initial Checks

  1. Once the welding pen is securely connected to your spot welding machine, plug in and turn on the spot welding machine.
  2. Ensure the welding machine is set to the appropriate power level for your material.
  3. The 73B welding pen features two indicator lights (blue and yellow) that provide real-time welding status, indicating high security welding.

4.2 Adjusting Welding Pressure

The welding pressure can be adjusted using the knob on the welding pen. This allows for optimal welding results on different material thicknesses.

  • Twist the knob to adjust the welding pressure.
  • A maximum welding pressure of 1200g is suitable for welding 0.3mm nickel strip.
  • A minimum welding pressure of 600g is suitable for welding 0.1mm nickel strip.

4.3 Performing a Spot Weld

  1. Place the materials to be welded (e.g., nickel strip to battery terminal) firmly together.
  2. Position the welding needles squarely on the desired welding spot.
  3. Apply slight downward pressure on the welding pen. The automatic trigger switch will activate the welding process.
  4. Observe the indicator lights for confirmation of a successful weld.
  5. The 73B pen is designed for welding thicknesses up to 0.25mm, including 0.15mm aluminum-nickel composite sheets.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Cleaning and Replacing Welding Needles

Regular cleaning and timely replacement of welding needles are crucial for consistent welding quality and performance.

  • After use, inspect the welding needles for any residue or wear.
  • Clean the tips of the needles with a fine abrasive or specialized cleaning tool if necessary.
  • To replace worn needles, use the provided 1.5mm wrench to loosen the retaining screws, remove the old needles, insert new ones, and tighten the screws.

5.2 Heat Dissipation

The 73B welding pen is designed with good conductivity and fast heat dissipation, allowing for extended use (up to 8 hours) without overheating. The temperature typically remains around 38 degrees Celsius during operation.

6. Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions:

  • Poor Weld Quality / Welding Spot Not Fastening:
    • Check the power settings on your spot welding machine.
    • Ensure the welding needles are clean and sharp. Replace if worn.
    • Adjust the welding pressure. Increase pressure for thicker materials.
    • Verify the material is within the maximum welding thickness of 0.25mm.
    • Ensure good contact between the welding needles and the workpiece.
  • Overheating of Welding Pen:
    • While the 73B has good heat dissipation, prolonged continuous use at very high power settings might cause excessive heat. Allow the pen to cool down if it feels excessively hot.
  • Inconsistent Welding:
    • Ensure stable power supply to your spot welding machine.
    • Check for loose connections in the copper wire or DC wire.
    • Verify the welding needle distance is appropriate and consistent.

  • Practice on Scrap Material: Before welding critical components, practice on similar scrap materials to fine-tune your spot welder's settings and the welding pen's pressure.
