2. Safety Information

To ensure safe operation and avoid damage to the meter, please observe the following safety rules:

  • Always ensure the multimeter is set to the correct function and range before making measurements.
  • Do not exceed the maximum input values for any range.
  • Exercise extreme caution when working with live circuits. High voltage can cause electric shock.
  • Never connect the meter to a voltage source when the function switch is in the current, resistance, diode, or continuity mode.
  • Disconnect the test leads from the circuit before changing functions or ranges.
  • Inspect test leads for damaged insulation or exposed metal before use. Replace if damaged.
  • Do not operate the meter if it appears damaged or if the case is open.
  • Keep fingers behind the finger guards on the test probes during measurements.
  • Replace the battery as soon as the low battery indicator appears to ensure accurate readings.

5. Setup

5.1 Battery Installation

  1. Ensure the multimeter is powered off and disconnect all test leads.
  2. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the meter.
  3. Use a screwdriver to remove the screw securing the cover.
  4. Insert three AAA (Type 7) batteries, observing the correct polarity (+ and -).
  5. Replace the battery compartment cover and secure it with the screw.

5.2 Connecting Test Leads

  1. Insert the black test lead into the 'COM' (Common) jack.
  2. For most measurements (voltage, resistance, capacitance, frequency, diode, continuity, low current), insert the red test lead into the 'VΩmA' jack.
  3. For high current measurements (up to 10A, T21A/B/C/D only), insert the red test lead into the '10A' jack.

6. Operating Instructions

Before operating, ensure the test leads are correctly connected and the battery is sufficiently charged.

6.1 Power On/Off and Function Selection

  • Power On: Rotate the central rotary switch from 'OFF' to the desired measurement function.
  • Power Off: Rotate the central rotary switch to 'OFF'. The meter also features an Automatic Power Off (APO) function after 15 minutes of inactivity.
  • Function Selection (FUNC/Hz button): For ranges with multiple functions (e.g., voltage AC/DC, diode/continuity), press the 'FUNC/Hz' button to cycle through the available modes. For T21D/E, this button also selects frequency measurement.

6.2 Measuring AC/DC Voltage

  1. Set the rotary switch to the 'V' (Voltage) position. For manual range models (T21A/B/C), select the appropriate range (e.g., 200V, 600V). For auto-ranging models (T21D/E), the meter will automatically select the range.
  2. Press the 'FUNC/Hz' button if necessary to select AC (~) or DC (—) voltage.
  3. Connect the test leads in parallel to the circuit or component being measured.
  4. Read the voltage value on the display.

6.3 Measuring Resistance

Resistance measurement demonstration using T21E

Figure 5: Measuring resistance with the multimeter.

  1. Set the rotary switch to the 'Ω' (Resistance) position. For manual range models, select the appropriate range.
  2. Ensure the circuit is de-energized before measuring resistance.
  3. Connect the test leads across the component.
  4. Read the resistance value on the display.

6.4 Continuity Test (On-off Beep)

  1. Set the rotary switch to the 'Ω' (Resistance) or continuity position.
  2. Press 'FUNC/Hz' until the continuity symbol (speaker icon) is displayed.
  3. Connect the test leads across the circuit or component.
  4. If the resistance is below a certain threshold (typically <50Ω), the buzzer will sound, indicating continuity.

6.5 Diode/Triode Test

  1. Set the rotary switch to the diode symbol.
  2. Press 'FUNC/Hz' if necessary to select diode test.
  3. Connect the red test lead to the anode and the black test lead to the cathode of the diode.
  4. Read the forward voltage drop on the display. Reverse the leads; the display should show 'OL' (Open Line) for a good diode.

6.6 Measuring DC Current

  1. IMPORTANT: Ensure the circuit is de-energized before connecting the meter in series.
  2. For currents up to 200mA, set the rotary switch to 'mA' and connect the red lead to the 'VΩmA' jack.
  3. For currents up to 10A (T21A/B/C/D only), set the rotary switch to '10A' and connect the red lead to the '10A' jack.
  4. Connect the meter in series with the circuit.
  5. Apply power to the circuit and read the current value.

6.7 NCV (Non-Contact Voltage) Measurement

NCV (Non-Contact Voltage) measurement demonstration

Figure 6: Performing NCV measurement.

  1. Set the rotary switch to the 'NCV' position.
  2. Move the top part of the multimeter (NCV sensing area) close to the AC voltage source (e.g., a live wire or outlet).
  3. The meter will detect the AC voltage, and the NCV indicator will light up. A buzzer alarm with different frequencies will sound, indicating the intensity of the detected voltage.

6.8 Temperature Measurement (T21C/T21D Only)

Temperature measurement demonstration using T21D

Figure 7: Measuring temperature with T21D.

  1. Set the rotary switch to the '°C/°F' (Temperature) position.
  2. Connect a K-type thermocouple (not always included) to the 'VΩmA' and 'COM' jacks, observing polarity.
  3. Place the thermocouple probe on or near the object whose temperature is to be measured.
  4. Read the temperature on the display. Press 'FUNC/Hz' to switch between Celsius and Fahrenheit.

6.9 Infrared Remote Control Detection (T21B Only)

  1. Set the rotary switch to the 'IR' (Infrared) position.
  2. Point an infrared remote control at the IR sensor on the multimeter and press a button on the remote.
  3. The multimeter will indicate if an infrared signal is detected, typically by a visual indicator or a change on the display.

6.10 Frequency and Capacitance Measurement (T21D/T21E Only)

  1. Set the rotary switch to the 'Hz%' (Frequency/Duty Cycle) or 'Cap' (Capacitance) position.
  2. Press 'FUNC/Hz' to select the desired measurement mode.
  3. Connect the test leads across the component or circuit. Ensure capacitors are discharged before measuring.
  4. Read the value on the display.

6.11 Fire Wire Discrimination (T21E Only)

  1. Set the rotary switch to the 'Fire Wire' detection mode (specific symbol for T21E).

  • Flashlight: Press and hold the 'Backlight/Data Hold' button to turn the flashlight on/off.

7. Maintenance

7.1 Cleaning

Wipe the meter with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Keep the display clean and dry.

7.2 Battery Replacement

Replace the batteries when the low battery indicator appears on the display. Refer to Section 5.1 for battery installation instructions.

7.3 Fuse Replacement (T21A/B/C/D Current Protection)

If the current measurement function fails, the fuse may need replacement. This typically requires opening the meter's casing. Refer to a qualified technician or the full service manual for detailed instructions on fuse replacement to avoid damaging the device or voiding the warranty.

8. Troubleshooting

9. User Tips

  • For manual ranging models (T21A/B/C), always start with the highest range when measuring an unknown voltage or current to prevent overloading the meter.
  • When measuring resistance, ensure the component is isolated from the circuit to get an accurate reading.
  • The NCV function is excellent for quickly checking for live wires without direct contact, enhancing safety.
  • Utilize the backlight in dimly lit environments for better visibility of the display.
  • Remember that the T21E model offers True RMS for more accurate AC measurements, especially with non-sinusoidal waveforms.
