3. Setup and Powering On

Before using your NF-308S, ensure it is properly powered and configured.

3.1 Battery Installation

The NF-308S requires a 9V alkaline battery (NEDA 1604/6F22 DC9V) for both the Emitter and Receiver units. Batteries are typically not included in the package and must be purchased separately.

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the Emitter and Receiver units.
  2. Open the battery cover.
  3. Insert a 9V alkaline battery, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
  4. Close the battery cover securely.

3.2 Initial Power On

Press the power button on the Emitter unit to turn it on. The LCD screen will light up, displaying the current software version (e.g., Ver.6.8 NF-308) and a menu of test options.

4. Operating Instructions

The NF-308S offers several testing modes for comprehensive cable analysis.

4.1 Wiremap Testing (Cable Continuity)

This function checks for open circuits, short circuits, jumper wires, and reverse connections in RJ45, RJ11, and BNC cables.

  1. Connect one end of the cable to the appropriate port on the Emitter (e.g., RJ45, RJ11, BNC).
  2. Connect the other end of the cable to the Remote unit.
  3. On the Emitter, select "1. WireMap" from the menu using the function buttons.
  4. Press the "SCAN" button to start the test.
  5. The LCD will display the wiremap results, indicating "PASS" for good cables or identifying specific faults (e.g., "Short 36" for a short circuit on pair 3-6, "Wire Map: FAIL" for a broken pair).

4.2 Cable Length Measurement and Fault Distance

Measure the length of RJ45 cables and pinpoint the location of a break or fault.

  1. Connect one end of the RJ45 cable to the Emitter's RJ45 port. The remote unit is not required for length measurement.
  2. On the Emitter, select "2. Pair&Length" from the menu.
  3. Press the "SCAN" button.
  4. The LCD will display the length for each pair. If a break is detected, it will show "Open" followed by the pair number and the distance to the break (e.g., "Open 45 30.5m"). The accuracy is approximately 98% for lengths up to 350m.

Figure 4: Cable length and broken distance measurement.

4.3 Port Finder (Hub Blink)

Quickly locate the corresponding network port on a Hub or Switch by making its light flash.

  1. Connect the Emitter to a network port on the Hub/Switch using an RJ45 cable.
  2. On the Emitter, select "4. Port Flash" from the menu.
  3. The Emitter will send a signal that causes the connected port's LED on the Hub/Switch to flash simultaneously, allowing for easy identification.

Figure 5: Using the Port Finder function to locate a network port.

4.4 Cable Tracing (Hunting)

Locate specific cables among a bundle of unknown cables using the Receiver (probe).

  1. Connect the cable to be traced to the appropriate port on the Emitter.
  2. Turn on the Receiver unit.
  3. Select the "SCAN" mode on the Emitter.
  4. Use the Receiver's probe to scan the bundle of cables. The Receiver will emit an audible tone when it detects the signal from the Emitter, indicating the target cable. Adjust the volume as needed.

4.5 Polarity Testing

Measure DC voltage (0.5V-60V) and determine polarity.

  1. Connect the alligator clips to the Emitter's polarity test terminals.
  2. Attach the clips to the voltage source you wish to test.
  3. The LCD will display the DC voltage and indicate the polarity (positive/negative) for the red and black clips.

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your NF-308S.

6. Troubleshooting

This section addresses common issues you might encounter with the NF-308S.

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Device does not power on.Low or dead battery; incorrect battery installation.Replace the 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity.
"Wire Map: FAIL" or specific fault displayed.Open circuit, short circuit, cross-over, or reverse connection in the cable.Inspect the cable and connectors for damage. Repair or replace the faulty cable.
Inaccurate cable length measurement.Cable length exceeds 350m for optimal accuracy; uncalibrated device.Ensure cable is within the recommended range. Perform calibration if necessary (refer to user manual for calibration procedure).
Cannot find target cable with Receiver.Emitter not in SCAN mode; Receiver volume too low; interference.Ensure Emitter is in SCAN mode. Increase Receiver volume. Minimize interference from other electronic devices.
Port Finder not working.Incorrect port selected on Emitter; Hub/Switch not compatible or port is faulty.Ensure "Port Flash" mode is selected. Verify the Hub/Switch port is functional.
