5. Setup & Installation

Proper setup and installation are crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of your controller. Please read the following instructions carefully.

5.1 Motor Parameter Matching

It is essential to provide the matched motor parameters when ordering or setting up the controller. This allows for optimal configuration before delivery or during initial setup.

  • For Hub Motors: Please provide the motor speed, polar number, motor size, and model.
  • For Mid-Drive Motors: Please provide the motor power.

Note: This controller is designed to match well with QS Motors. It may not work properly with motors from other brands without significant parameter adjustments.

5.2 General Installation Considerations

The VOTOL EM50-4 controller is a universal version. After installation, some auxiliary functions of the original vehicle (such as speedometer display) may require modification to work correctly. Most functional interfaces are not plug-and-play and will need careful wiring and configuration.

Before making any modifications, carefully check the function lines on your original vehicle and the communication signals for components like the speedometer.

6. Wiring Diagram

Refer to the following diagrams for detailed wiring instructions. Ensure all connections are secure and correctly matched to avoid damage to the controller or motor.

Figure 7: Detailed circuit diagrams for VOTOL controllers, applicable for both hub motor and mid-drive motor setups. This diagram illustrates connections for power, motor phases, Hall signals, throttle, brakes, ignition, and programming ports.

Key Wiring Connections:

  • Power: Connect the main battery positive and negative terminals to the corresponding controller inputs.
  • Motor Phases: Connect the three motor phase wires (U, V, W) to the controller's phase outputs.
  • Hall Signal Line: Connect the Hall sensor wires from the motor to the controller's Hall input.
  • Throttle Handle: Connect the pink, green, and black wires for the throttle handle.
  • Brakes: Connect the low brake (or offset line) and purple high brake wire.
  • Electric Door Lock Cable: Connect the gray/purple electric door lock cable.
  • One Line Meter: Connect for meter display.
  • Curise: Connect the cruise function wire.
  • Three Speed: Connect the three-speed control wires.
  • Anti-theft: Connect the anti-theft positive/negative wires and the anti-theft cable.

8. Maintenance

The VOTOL EM50-4 controller is designed for durability with an IP65 waterproof rating. Regular maintenance is minimal but important for long-term performance:

  • Keep the controller clean and free from excessive dust or debris.
  • Periodically check all wiring connections for tightness and signs of wear or corrosion.
  • Ensure the controller's heat sink fins (Figure 2) are not obstructed to allow for proper cooling.
  • Avoid exposing the controller to extreme temperatures or harsh chemicals.

9. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your EM50-4 controller, consider the following common troubleshooting points:

9.1 Common Issues

  • Auxiliary functions not working (e.g., speedometer): As the controller is a universal version, some original vehicle auxiliary functions may require modification or specific wiring to function correctly. Verify the wiring and communication signals.
  • Motor not responding or erratic behavior:
    • Check all power and motor phase connections.
    • Verify Hall sensor connections.
    • Ensure motor parameters in the controller's programming match your motor's specifications.
    • Inspect the throttle connection.
  • Controller overheating: Ensure adequate airflow around the controller and that the heat sink fins are clean and unobstructed. Check for excessive current draw.

9.2 General Advice

If you experience persistent problems, please feel free to contact the seller for assistance. Providing detailed information about the issue and your motor's specifications will help in diagnosing the problem.

10. User Tips

Based on common user experiences and questions, here are some helpful tips:

  • Technical Knowledge: If you lack knowledge in electric kit assembly and wiring, it is advisable to seek professional assistance for installation to prevent potential damage.
