Setup and Preparation

The JS AB1 key blanks are raw materials that require professional cutting to match a specific lock. This process should only be performed by a qualified locksmith using appropriate key cutting machinery.

  1. Selection: Ensure the JS AB1 key blank matches the profile of the original key or the lock cylinder.
  2. Material Check: Note that key blanks are shipped in either copper or white copper materials. Both are suitable for standard key cutting processes.
  3. Cutting: A locksmith will use a key cutting machine to duplicate the bitting (tooth pattern) from an existing key onto the blank. Precision is crucial for proper function.
  4. Deburring: After cutting, the key may have sharp edges or burrs. These should be carefully removed to ensure smooth operation and prevent damage to the lock.

Operating Instructions (After Cutting)

Once the key blank has been professionally cut and deburred, it functions as a standard key.

  1. Insertion: Gently insert the cut key into the lock's keyway. Do not force the key.
  2. Turning: Once fully inserted, turn the key in the appropriate direction (clockwise or counter-clockwise) to engage the lock mechanism.
  3. Removal: After unlocking or locking, return the key to its original position and gently pull it out.

Note: If the key does not insert smoothly or turn easily, do not force it. Forcing the key can damage both the key and the lock.

Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the key with a soft, dry cloth to remove dirt and grime. Avoid harsh chemicals that may corrode the metal.
  • Lubrication: If the lock mechanism becomes stiff, apply a small amount of graphite-based lubricant to the key and insert it into the lock several times. Do not use oil-based lubricants in locks as they can attract dust and cause clogging.
  • Storage: Store keys in a dry place to prevent oxidation, especially for copper keys.

Troubleshooting

  • Key does not insert smoothly:
    • Check for burrs or rough edges on the key. If found, carefully deburr with a fine file or sandpaper.
    • Ensure the key profile matches the lock's keyway.
    • Inspect the lock's keyway for obstructions.
  • Key inserts but does not turn:
    • The key may be incorrectly cut. Consult a professional locksmith for re-evaluation or recutting.
    • The lock mechanism might be jammed or faulty.
    • Try lubricating the lock as described in the Maintenance section.
  • Key feels loose or wobbly in the lock:
    • This could indicate an incorrect key blank profile was used or excessive wear on the lock cylinder. Consult a locksmith.
