1. Introduction
The HW300PRO Digital Backlight LCD Film Thickness Meter is a versatile and essential tool designed for non-destructive measurement of coating and paint thickness on various metal substrates. It utilizes sophisticated integrated probe technology, automatically detecting the substrate type (magnetic or non-magnetic) using principles of electromagnetic induction and eddy current effect.
This instrument is widely used across manufacturing, metal processing, chemical industry, commodity inspection, and laboratory settings, offering reliable performance in both indoor and outdoor environments.

4. Setup
4.1. Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment on the back of the device.
- Open the battery cover.
- Insert two (2) 1.5V AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-).
- Close the battery cover securely.
4.2. Calibration
For accurate measurements, it is crucial to perform calibration. The HW300PRO supports Zero Calibration and Multi-point Calibration.
- Zero Calibration: Place the meter's probe directly onto the bare standard aluminum base sheet. Follow the on-screen prompts or refer to the manual for specific button presses to perform zero calibration.
- Multi-point Calibration: Use the provided calibration films of known thicknesses (0.05mm, 0.10mm, 0.25mm, 0.50mm, 1.00mm, 2.00mm) on the standard aluminum base sheet. Measure each film and adjust the meter if necessary according to the manual's instructions to match the known thickness.

- Unit Switching: Indicates current unit (μm micron, mm mm, Mill mils).
- Up Key (Unit Switch): Press to change measurement units.
- Right Key (Zero Calibration, Statistics): Used for zero calibration and switching between average/minimum/maximum/number display.
- Down Key (Backlight, Auto Shutdown): Controls backlight and automatic shutdown settings.
- Left Key (Probe Modes, Clear Statistics): Switches probe modes and clears statistical data.
- Switch Machine: Power On/Off button.
- Probe: The sensor for taking measurements.
5.2. Taking a Measurement
- Press the power button (12) to turn on the device. The large-screen LCD will display the working mode, number of readings, and current capacity.
- Ensure the device is calibrated (refer to Section 4.2).
- Place the probe (13) gently and perpendicularly onto the surface of the object you wish to measure.
- The device will automatically detect the substrate type (Fe or NFE) and display the measurement reading (2) in the selected unit (7).
- You can switch units using the Up Key (8) or view statistical data using the Right Key (9).
- To turn off the device, press and hold the power button (12), or it will automatically shut down after a period of inactivity (indicated by 4).

6. Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the meter in a dry, dust-free environment away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
- Battery Replacement: When the low power indicator (5) appears on the display, replace both 1.5V AAA batteries promptly to ensure accurate readings and proper device function.
- Probe Care: Keep the probe clean and free from debris. Avoid scratching or damaging the probe surface, as this can affect measurement accuracy.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Device does not turn on | Dead or incorrectly installed batteries | Replace batteries with new 1.5V AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity. |
| Inaccurate readings | Needs calibration; dirty probe; incorrect measurement technique | Perform zero and multi-point calibration. Clean the probe. Ensure the probe is placed perpendicularly and gently on the surface. |
| Low power indicator displayed | Batteries are running low | Replace both 1.5V AAA batteries. |
| Display is dim or flickering | Low battery power | Replace both 1.5V AAA batteries. |
8. User Tips
- Regular Calibration: To maintain the highest accuracy, especially for critical measurements, perform a zero calibration before each use or at least daily. If you notice inconsistent readings, recalibrate the device.
- Stable Placement: Always ensure the probe is placed firmly and perpendicularly on the surface being measured. Any wobbling or angled placement can lead to inaccurate results.
- Surface Preparation: For best results, ensure the measurement surface is clean and free of dust, dirt, or moisture.
