5. Setup Instructions

Before using the Aermotor EM285, ensure your vehicle's battery is accessible and the ignition is off, unless specific tests require it to be on.

6.1 Basic Testing Functions

  • Test for Continuity: Touch the probe tip to the component or wire you want to test. If the circuit is continuous, the tester will indicate.
  • Test for Polarity of a Voltage: Touch the probe tip to a power source. The 'POSITIVE' (red) or 'NEGATIVE' (green) LED will illuminate to indicate the polarity.
  • Check Switches, Relays, Diodes, Fuses, and Circuits: Apply the probe tip to the component. Use the power switch to apply positive or negative battery current to the tip as needed for testing. Observe the LEDs for correct operation.
  • Test for Polarity of Electric Cables and Plugs: Similar to voltage polarity testing, touch the probe to the cable or plug contact to determine its polarity.
  • Track and Locate Short Circuits: The tester can help pinpoint short circuits by following the circuit path and observing where the current drops or changes unexpectedly. The 8A overload protection helps prevent damage during this process.
  • Test for Bad Ground Contacts: Connect the probe to a suspected ground point. If the ground is good, the 'NEGATIVE' LED should illuminate when the power switch is rocked to apply negative current.

6.2 Applying Power/Ground to Components

To apply a positive or negative battery current to a component for testing:

  1. Touch the probe tip to the component's terminal.
  2. Rock the power switch forward (towards the probe tip) to apply positive (+) battery current. The 'POSITIVE' LED will light up.
  3. Rock the power switch backward (away from the probe tip) to apply negative (-) battery current (ground). The 'NEGATIVE' LED will light up.

This feature is useful for activating components like motors, lights, or relays directly to check their functionality.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: After each use, wipe the probe tip and the unit with a clean, dry cloth to remove any dirt, grease, or moisture.
  • Storage: Store the tester in a dry, cool place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Ensure the cable is neatly coiled to prevent damage.
  • Cable Inspection: Periodically inspect the cable and clips for any signs of wear, cuts, or damage. Do not use the device if the cable insulation is compromised.

8. Troubleshooting

  • No Power/Indicators Not Lighting Up:
    • Ensure the red and black alligator clips are securely connected to the correct battery terminals (+ and -).
    • Check the vehicle's battery for sufficient charge (must be within 6-24V DC).
    • Inspect the power cable for any breaks or damage.
  • Overload Protection Activates (No Current Output):
    • The device has detected a current draw exceeding 8A. This indicates a short circuit in the component or circuit being tested.
    • Disconnect the probe immediately and investigate the circuit for the short.
  • Incorrect Polarity Indication:
    • Double-check your connections to the battery.
    • Ensure the component or wire being tested is part of a standard DC automotive circuit.

  • For intermittent issues, try wiggling wires and connectors while testing to identify loose connections.
  • Always start with a visual inspection of fuses and wiring before using the tester.
  • When testing components, apply power for short bursts to avoid overheating or damage, especially if you suspect a fault.
  • Keep the probe tip clean and sharp for accurate readings and to easily pierce wire insulation if necessary.
