5. Setup and Installation

5.1 Trigger Type Shifters (with indicator)

  1. Installation: Mount the shifter onto the handlebar bar as shown in Figure 6. Tighten shifters with a 5mm Allen key. (Tighten clockwise to secure).
  2. Adjustment:
    • Adjust the brake lever to a suitable position where it will not obstruct the brake lever operation and shift lever's shifting.
    • Press the upper lever of the left shifter until the indicator shows "1".
    • Press the upper lever of the right shifter until the indicator shows the maximum digit (e.g., 7 for 7-speed).
    • Connect and secure the inner cable to the front or rear derailleur and make sure the chain stays in the bottom chain ring (front) or smallest sprocket (rear). For more details, please refer to the derailleur installation instructions.
    • The adjusting barrel on shifters offers micro-adjustment for precise tuning.
  3. Inner Cable Replacement:
    • Release the inner cable from the derailleur.
    • Press the upper lever of the left shifter until the indicator shows "1".
    • Press the upper lever of the right shifter until the indicator shows the maximum digit.
    • Push the inner cable out from the cable hook and replace with a new one. See Figure 7 for cable insertion detail.

5.2 Front Derailleur (MTB)

  1. Installation:
    • Loosely attach the derailleur to the seat tube.
    • Position the derailleur so that the outer plate of the chain guide is directly above and parallel with the largest chainring, with 1-3mm clearance between the two. See Figure 9.
    • Securely tighten the front derailleur to 5-7Nm (44-60 in.lbs.).
  2. Low Adjustment: With the chain on the smallest front chainring and largest rear cog, turn the low adjustment screw until the clearance between the chain and the inner plate of the chain guide is 0-0.5mm. See Figure 9.
  3. Cable Installation: Route the inner cable from the shift/brake lever to the front derailleur. Pull the cable tight to remove slack and secure the cable fixing bolt. See Figure 9. Grab the cable along the underside of the down tube (Down-pull cable route) or grab the cable from the top of the seat tube (Top-pull cable route) and pull on it to stretch it. Then loosen the cable fixing bolt, pull the cable tight once again and secure it by tightening the cable fixing bolt to 5-7Nm.
  4. High Adjustment: With the chain on the largest chainring and smallest rear cog, turn the high adjustment screw until the clearance between the chain and the outer plate of the chain guide is 0-0.5mm. See Figure 9.
  5. Cable Tension Adjustment:
    • If the chain does not drop from the largest to smallest chainring during a downshift, loosen the knurled cable adjusting barrel (see Figure 9) 1/4 turn at a time to decrease cable tension.
    • If the chain does not climb from the smallest to largest chainring during an upshift, tighten the knurled cable adjusting barrel 1/4 turn at a time to increase cable tension.

5.3 Rear Derailleur (MTB)

  1. Installation:
    • Attach the derailleur to the rear frame dropout or derailleur hanger. See Figure 10.
    • Ensure that the B-tension adjustment screw does not contact the dropout tab in a way that would cause deformation.
    • Secure the derailleur attachment bolt to 8-10Nm (70-86 in.lbs.).
  2. High Adjustment: Turn the "H" adjustment screw until the derailleur guide pulley is centered directly beneath the outer edge of the smallest cog. See Figure 10.
  3. Cable Installation: Route the inner cable from the shift/brake lever to the rear derailleur. Pull the cable tight to remove slack and secure the cable fixing bolt. Be sure the cable is properly positioned under the cable fixing bolt washer (see Figure 10). Grab the cable along the underside of the down tube and pull on it to stretch it. Then loosen the cable fixing bolt, pull the cable tight once again and secure it by tightening the cable fixing bolt to 5-7Nm.
  4. Low Adjustment: Shift to the largest rear cog and turn the "L" adjustment screw until the derailleur guide pulley is centered directly beneath the largest cog. See Figure 10.
  5. B-Tension Adjustment: With the chain on the smallest chainring and largest rear cog, turn the crank backwards. Turn the B-tension adjustment screw to bring the guide pulley as close as possible to the large cog without touching it. Now move the chain to the smallest rear cog and adjust the B-tension screw to bring the guide pulley as close as possible to the smallest cog without touching it. See Figure 10.

6. Operation

The ZTTO shifting groupset uses trigger-type shifters for intuitive gear changes.

  • Downshifting (to a smaller gear/chainring): Push the lower lever of the shifter. This will move the chain to a smaller chainring (front) or a smaller sprocket (rear), making pedaling easier.
  • Upshifting (to a larger gear/chainring): Tap the upper lever of the shifter. This will move the chain to a larger chainring (front) or a larger sprocket (rear), making pedaling harder but allowing for higher speeds.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Regularly clean your derailleurs and shifters to remove dirt, mud, and grime. Use a bicycle-specific cleaner and a brush.
  • Lubrication: Keep your chain and derailleur pivots lubricated with appropriate bicycle chain lubricant. Avoid over-lubricating, which can attract more dirt.
  • Cable Inspection: Periodically check shift cables for fraying, rust, or kinks. Replace damaged cables promptly to ensure smooth shifting.
  • Adjustment Check: Over time, cables can stretch, and adjustments may be needed. Re-adjust the high (H) and low (L) limits and cable tension as described in the 'Setup and Installation' section if shifting becomes imprecise.
  • Tightness: Ensure all mounting bolts for shifters and derailleurs remain tight.

8. Troubleshooting

  • Difficulty Shifting: Check cable tension. If too loose, tighten the adjusting barrel. If too tight, loosen it. Ensure cables are clean and lubricated.
  • Chain Rubbing: If the chain rubs against the front derailleur cage, adjust the high (H) or low (L) limit screws, or fine-tune cable tension using the adjusting barrel.
  • Chain Drops Off Gears: This often indicates incorrect limit screw settings. Re-adjust the H and L screws for both front and rear derailleurs.
  • No Shifting Response: Check if the shift cable is broken or disconnected. Ensure the shifter mechanism is not jammed with debris.
  • Noisy Shifting: Could be due to lack of lubrication, misaligned derailleurs, or worn-out chain/cassette. Clean, lubricate, and check alignment.

9. User Tips

  • Initial Setup: Take your time during the initial setup. Precise adjustment of limit screws and cable tension is key to smooth and reliable shifting.
  • Cable Stretch: New shift cables will stretch slightly after the first few rides. Expect to perform a minor re-adjustment of cable tension after the first 50-100km of use.
  • Cleanliness is Key: A clean drivetrain shifts better and lasts longer. Make cleaning your shifting components a regular part of your bike maintenance routine.
  • Listen to Your Bike: Pay attention to any unusual noises during shifting. These can be early indicators of an issue that can be easily fixed before it becomes a bigger problem.
