1. Introduction

3. Setup Guide

Follow these steps to set up your ThinkScan Max 2 device for the first time:

3.1 Initial Power On and Language Selection

  1. Press and hold the power button on the device to turn it on.
  2. Once the device boots up, you will be prompted to select your preferred language. The device supports 15 languages including English, Portuguese, French, Russian, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, German, Traditional Chinese, Hungarian, Polish, Italian, Greek, Arabic, and Slovak.

3.2 Network Connection

  1. After selecting the language, connect the device to a Wi-Fi network. This is essential for software updates and online features.
  2. Navigate to 'Network Setting' and select your Wi-Fi network, then enter the password.

3.3 Registration and Activation

  1. Select your timezone.
  2. Review and agree to the registration terms.
  3. Create a new account by entering a username (email address) and setting a password. A 6-digit verification code will be sent to your email.
  4. Enter the verification code and complete the registration.
  5. Activate your device using the unique serial number and activation code found in the 'PASSWORD LETTER' included in your package.

3.4 Connecting to Vehicle

The ThinkScan Max 2 uses a wireless VCI (Vehicle Communication Interface) dongle for diagnosis. Locate your vehicle's OBD2 port (usually under the dashboard) and plug in the VCI dongle. The device will connect wirelessly via Bluetooth.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Full System Diagnostics

The ThinkScan Max 2 performs OE-level diagnostics for all vehicle systems, including Engine, Auto Transmission, Airbags, ABS, Immobilizer, and more. This allows for comprehensive fault detection and analysis.

  1. From the main menu, tap 'Scan'.
  2. Select 'AUTOSEARCH' to automatically detect the vehicle's VIN, or choose 'American', 'European', or 'Asian' to manually select the vehicle make.
  3. The device will scan all available systems. Once complete, you can view detailed information for each module.
  4. Functions available include:
    • Read Fault Codes (DTCs): Displays detailed descriptions of diagnostic trouble codes.
    • Clear Fault Codes: Erases DTCs and turns off the Check Engine Light (MIL) after repairs.
    • Read Data Stream: Shows live ECU/PCM data, often with graphical plotting for dynamic analysis. Up to 4 data streams can be combined to generate graphs.
    • Retrieve ECU Information: Accesses vehicle information such as VIN, CID, and CVN.

4.4 Advanced Functions: ECU Coding & Active Test

The ThinkScan Max 2 supports advanced functions such as ECU Coding and Active Test (Bi-directional Control), which are typically found in higher-end diagnostic tools.

  • ECU Coding: This function allows you to re-flash vehicle control modules, update software to the latest version, and reprogram adaptive data for certain components after repairs or replacements. It can customize vehicle settings like alarms, door locks, and lighting.
  • Active Test (Bi-directional Control): This feature enables the tester to send commands to the ECU to activate specific actuators (e.g., turn on the radiator fan, adjust throttle, open/close windows) to verify system integrity and component functionality.

Note: ECU Coding and Active Test functions may require an optional subscription for specific car makes/models. Please check compatibility with your vehicle's VIN before purchase.

4.5 Diagnostic Report Generation and Sharing

After completing a diagnostic scan, the device can generate a comprehensive report. This report can be shared wirelessly via email or by scanning a QR code, allowing for easy record-keeping or sharing with clients/technicians.

4.6 Built-in Google Chrome

5. Maintenance

5.1 Software Updates

The ThinkScan Max 2 offers lifetime free updates for all system diagnostic functions, OBD2 functions, and the 28 reset functions. Regular updates ensure your device has the latest vehicle coverage and diagnostic capabilities.

  1. Connect the device to a stable Wi-Fi network.
  2. From the main menu, tap 'Update'.
  3. The device will check for available updates. Tap 'Download' or 'Update All' to install.
  4. Ensure the device remains connected to power during updates to prevent interruption.

5.2 Cleaning and Storage

  • Clean the device with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Store the device in its EVA storage bag when not in use to protect it from dust and physical damage.
  • Keep the device away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.

6. Troubleshooting

  • Mileage Correction: The ODO Reset function is primarily for correcting inaccurate mileage readings due to sensor damage or odometer failure, not for arbitrary mileage adjustments.
  • FCA Vehicles: For specific advanced functions on FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) vehicles, additional authorization (e.g., FCA AutoAuth) might be required, even if the brand is generally supported. Verify specific feature compatibility.
  • Older Vehicles: While the device supports a wide range of vehicles, for very old models (pre-OBD2 standard), you might need specific adapters not included in the standard package.
