6. Initial Setup

6.1. Battery Installation/Replacement

The meter comes with batteries installed. If the low battery indicator flashes, replace the batteries:

  1. Open the battery compartment.
  2. Remove the old batteries.
  3. Insert 3 new 1.5V (LR44) button batteries, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Close the battery compartment securely.

6.2. First Use

The meter is factory calibrated and ready for direct use. Remove the protective cap before use.

7. Operation

7.1. Power On/Off

  • Press the ON/OFF button to turn the meter on.
  • Press the ON/OFF button again to turn the meter off.
  • The meter will automatically shut off after 5 minutes of inactivity to conserve battery.

7.2. Mode Switching

The YY-1010 supports 10 different measurement modes. To switch between modes:

  • Press the MODE/CAL key to cycle through PH, EC, TDS, ORP, H2, Fertility, Salinity, S.G., Resistivity, and Temperature displays.

7.3. HOLD / TEMP Function

  • Hold Reading: During measurement, briefly press the HOLD/TEMP key to freeze the current reading on the display. Press again to release.
  • Temperature Unit Conversion: Long press the HOLD/TEMP key for 3 seconds to switch the temperature unit between Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F).

7.4. Taking Measurements

  1. Remove the protective cap.
  2. Rinse the electrode with distilled water and gently wipe it dry.
  3. Immerse the electrode into the sample solution, ensuring the probe is fully submerged.
  4. Gently stir the meter several times to remove any air bubbles around the electrode.
  5. Wait for the reading to stabilize on the display.
  6. Record the measurement.
  7. After use, rinse the electrode with pure water and replace the protective cap.

8. Calibration

Regular calibration ensures the accuracy of your meter. Always use fresh buffer solutions for calibration.

8.1. PH Calibration (3-point)

You will need pH 4.00, pH 6.86, and pH 9.18 buffer solutions.

  1. Dissolve each package of pH powder with 250ml of 25°C distilled water into separate cups.
  2. Turn on the meter and press MODE/CAL to convert to PH Mode.
  3. Calibrate pH 6.86:
    a. Put the electrode into the pH 6.86 solution. Wait for the value to stabilize.
    b. Press and hold MODE/CAL for 5 seconds. The screen will display "CAL".
    c. Release the button and wait for "6.86" to flash 3 times to complete the 6.86 calibration. Rinse the electrode with distilled water.
  4. Calibrate pH 4.00:
    a. Put the electrode into the pH 4.00 solution. Wait for the value to stabilize.
    b. Press and hold MODE/CAL for 5 seconds. The screen will display "CAL".
    c. Release the button and wait for "4.00" to flash 3 times to complete the 4.00 calibration. Rinse the electrode with distilled water.
  5. Calibrate pH 9.18:
    a. Put the electrode into the pH 9.18 solution. Wait for the value to stabilize.
    b. Press and hold MODE/CAL for 5 seconds. The screen will display "CAL".
    c. Release the button and wait for "9.18" to flash 3 times to complete the 9.18 calibration. Rinse the electrode with distilled water.

8.2. EC Calibration (2-point)

You will need 1413 µs/cm and 12.88 mS/cm buffer solutions.

  1. Turn on the meter and press MODE/CAL to convert to EC Mode.
  2. Calibrate 1413 µs/cm:
    a. Put the electrode into the 1413 µs/cm solution. Wait for the value to stabilize.
    b. Press and hold MODE/CAL for 5 seconds. The screen displays the test value.
    c. Use the Up/Down buttons to adjust the value until it reads "1413".
    d. Wait for "1413" to flash 3 times to complete the calibration. Rinse the electrode with distilled water.
  3. Calibrate 12.88 mS/cm:
    a. Put the electrode into the 12.88 mS/cm solution. Wait for the value to stabilize.
    b. Press and hold MODE/CAL for 5 seconds. The screen displays the test value.
    c. Use the Up/Down buttons to adjust the value until it reads "12.88".
    d. Wait for "12.88" to flash 3 times to complete the calibration. Rinse the electrode with distilled water.

8.3. ORP Calibration (1-point)

You will need a 256mV ORP buffer solution.

  1. Turn on the meter and press MODE/CAL to convert to ORP Mode.
  2. Put the electrode into the 256mV solution. Wait for the value to stabilize.
  3. Press and hold MODE/CAL for 5 seconds. The screen displays the test value "256".
  4. The ORP calibration is complete. Rinse the electrode with distilled water.

9. Maintenance

9.1. Electrode Cleaning and Care

  • Always clean the electrode with pure water (distilled or purified water) after each use.
  • Gently wipe the electrode dry.
  • Ensure no air bubbles are trapped around the electrode during use.
  • Avoid colliding or rubbing the electrode to prevent damage.
  • Always replace the protective cap when the meter is not in use to keep the electrode moist and protected.

9.2. Storage

  • Store the meter in a dry place.
  • Do not disassemble the meter without permission to avoid damage.

10. Troubleshooting

10.1. General Issues

  • Meter not turning on: Check battery installation and ensure batteries are not depleted. Replace if necessary.
  • Inaccurate readings: Recalibrate the meter according to the instructions in Section 8. Ensure the electrode is clean.
  • Low battery indicator flashing: Replace the 3*1.5V (LR44) button batteries.

10.2. Resetting to Factory Settings

If you encounter persistent issues or incorrect pH calibration, you can reset the meter to factory settings:

  1. With the meter powered on, press and hold both the HOLD/TEMP button and the MODE/CAL button simultaneously.
  2. Continue holding until the screen displays "del".
  3. Release all buttons. The meter is now reset to factory defaults.

11. User Tips

  • Calibration Solutions: Always use fresh and appropriate buffer solutions for accurate calibration. Expired or contaminated solutions can lead to incorrect readings.
  • Electrode Immersion: Ensure the electrode is fully immersed in the solution during measurement and calibration to get stable and accurate results.
  • Gentle Stirring: A gentle stir helps remove air bubbles and ensures proper contact between the electrode and the sample.
  • Regular Cleaning: Consistent cleaning of the electrode after each use with distilled water is crucial for maintaining accuracy and extending the life of the probe.
