4. Setup and Installation

4.1 Magnetic Attachment (MagSafe Compatible)

  1. Ensure your phone is an iPhone 12 or newer model, or has a magnetic metal ring installed.
  2. Align the back of the SmallRig Wireless Video Monitor with the MagSafe area on your phone or magnetic ring.
  3. The monitor will securely snap into place due to its ultra-strong 2500Gs magnetic hold.

4.2 Mounting with Pan & Tilt Head

  1. Attach the Pan & Tilt Head to your phone cage or other compatible accessory using its standard 1/4-20" screw or cold shoe mount.
  2. Secure the SmallRig Wireless Video Monitor to the Pan & Tilt Head.
  3. Adjust the angle of the monitor as needed for optimal viewing during your shoot.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Power On/Off

Locate the power button on the side of the monitor. Press and hold to power on or off the device.

5.2 Screen Mirroring

The monitor connects wirelessly to your smartphone via WiFi Direct, enabling real-time screen mirroring. Ensure your phone's WiFi is enabled and follow the on-screen prompts or your phone's casting instructions to connect to the monitor. The connection is stable up to 10m (32.8ft).

5.3 Mirror Mode Switching

To switch the display to mirror mode, double-tap the designated button on the monitor. This is useful for self-recording or reviewing footage from a different perspective.

5.4 Brightness Adjustment

The monitor features a 3-level brightness adjustment. Use the brightness +/- buttons on the monitor to cycle through the different brightness settings to suit your environment.

5.5 Wireless Remote Control

Pair the wireless remote control with your smartphone to enable remote photography and video recording. The remote operates wirelessly up to 10m (32.8ft), providing convenience for capturing shots from a distance.

5.6 Charging

The monitor is equipped with a USB-C charging port. Connect the provided charging cable to the monitor and a suitable power source to recharge the built-in 1500mAh battery.

6. Video Compatibility

  • iPhone Native Camera: Supports recording at 4K/24fps and 4K/30fps. Please note that there may be noticeable lag when recording at 4K/60fps and higher resolutions with the native iPhone camera app.
  • Blackmagic Camera App: Fully compatible with all 4K recording options available within the Blackmagic Camera App, offering a smoother experience for higher frame rates.

8. Troubleshooting

  • No Display/Power: Ensure the monitor is fully charged. Connect the charging cable and allow it to charge for at least 30 minutes before attempting to power on again.
  • Connection Issues: If the monitor fails to connect to your phone, ensure both devices have WiFi enabled. Try restarting both the monitor and your phone. Move closer to the monitor to rule out range issues.
  • Lag in 4K/60fps (iPhone Native Camera): As noted in the specifications, the iPhone native camera may experience lag at 4K/60fps and higher. For smoother performance at these settings, consider using the Blackmagic Camera App.
  • Remote Control Not Responding: Check the battery of the remote control. Ensure it is paired correctly with your phone.

9. User Tips

  • For optimal battery life, reduce screen brightness when not in bright environments.
  • When using the magnetic attachment, ensure the monitor is firmly secured to prevent accidental detachment during movement.
  • Experiment with different mounting positions using the Pan & Tilt Head to find the best angle for your specific shooting needs.
  • Keep the firmware of your smartphone and any camera apps updated for the best compatibility and performance with the monitor.

10. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the monitor screen and body. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that could damage the surface.
  • Storage: Store the monitor in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. When not in use for extended periods, ensure the battery is partially charged (around 50%) to prolong its lifespan.
  • Handling: Handle the monitor with care to avoid drops or impacts, which could damage internal components or the screen.
