6. Operating Instructions

The MOES Human Presence Sensor offers several adjustable parameters to optimize its performance for your specific environment and needs. These settings are typically configured within the MOES App.

6.1. Detection Distance

  • The sensor has a detection range of 0 to 9 meters, with a default setting of 7 meters.
  • You can adjust the minimum and maximum detection range in the app (e.g., 0.00m to 9.5m).
  • Recommendation: If the installation height is low or the area is narrow, consider reducing the detection distance to avoid unnecessary interference from reflections or objects outside the intended monitoring zone.
App screenshot showing the 'Minimum range' and 'Maximum range' settings for detection distance, with values 0.00m and 9.50m respectively. A diagram illustrates the detection cone from the ceiling.
Figure 5: Adjusting Detection Distance in the App

6.2. Sensitivity

  • Sensitivity can be set from 0 (lowest) to 9 (highest), with a default of 7.
  • Lower Sensitivity: Requires greater micro-motion or breathing amplitude, and closer proximity for detection. This can reduce false alarms in busy environments.
  • Higher Sensitivity: Can detect weaker movements but may be more prone to false alarms from minor environmental interferences.
Three app screenshots demonstrating sensitivity settings from 1 to 9. A person is shown in a room, with red detection beams indicating presence. Lower sensitivity (1) shows no detection, while higher sensitivity (5 and 9) shows 'Presence True'.
Figure 6: Adjusting Sensitivity Levels (0-9)

6.3. Delay Time

There are two delay time parameters:

  • Target Detection Confirmation Time: Configures the time (0-0.5s) after a target is detected before reporting "presence". A larger value reduces false alarms but increases reporting time.
  • Target Disappearance Delay Time: Configures the time (20s-25min) after a target disappears before reporting "absence". A larger value reduces false alarms due to accidental brief disappearances (e.g., respiratory pause). It is recommended not to set this below 15 seconds.
App screenshot showing 'Detection latency' setting, with a slider set to 7.0 seconds. Two images show a person in a room, one with 'Presence True' (>7s) and another with 'Presence False' (<7s), illustrating how latency affects detection reporting.
Figure 7: Setting Detection Latency to Reduce False Alarms

6.4. Hold Time

  • The "Hold time" setting (0-1500s) is available in the app for more accurate monitoring. This parameter helps maintain the 'presence' status for a set duration even if minor movements cease, preventing rapid toggling of status.
App screenshot showing 'Hold time' setting with a value of 0.5. Two images show a person moving ('Presence True') and standing still ('Presence False' after hold time expires), demonstrating how hold time affects detection.
Figure 8: Setting Hold Time for Accurate Monitoring

6.5. Illuminance Monitor

  • The sensor includes a photometric function that monitors real-time luminance (0-2000Lux).
  • This allows for smart scene linkage, such as automatically turning lights ON/OFF based on changes in ambient brightness, helping to protect eyes and save energy.

7. User Tips

  • Understanding Detection: Unlike traditional PIR motion sensors, this mmWave radar sensor can detect even subtle movements like breathing, making it highly effective for detecting static presence (e.g., someone sleeping or reading quietly).
  • Optimizing for False Alarms: If you experience false detections (detecting presence when no one is there), try shortening the detection distance and adjusting sensitivity. Look for environmental interferences like reflective surfaces or objects that might cause radar reflections.
  • Addressing Missed Detections: Ensure individuals are within the effective detection area. For static presence, body parts with micro-movements (like breathing) should be inclined towards or facing the sensor.
  • Delay Time Settings: To prevent missed reports due to brief pauses in movement (e.g., holding breath), set the "target disappearance delay time" to at least 15 seconds.
  • Installation Height Considerations: In areas with low or narrow installation heights (e.g., bathrooms, washing rooms, kitchens), it's advisable to set the detection distance smaller than the installation height and fine-tune sensitivity to prevent unwanted detections.

8. Troubleshooting

8.1. Common Problems and Solutions

  • Detecting presence when no one is there (False Alarms):
    • Action: Reduce the detection distance in the app.
    • Action: Adjust sensitivity to a lower setting (e.g., from 7 to 5 or lower).
    • Action: Investigate the environment for potential interferences such as strong reflections, moving objects (curtains, pets), or vibrations. Limit the farthest detection distance and consider adjusting the installation method if possible.
  • Cannot detect when human is present (Missed Detections):
    • Action: Ensure individuals are within the effective detection area.
    • Action: For static presence, body parts with micro-movements (like breathing) should be inclined towards or facing the sensor.
    • Action: Increase the "target disappearance delay time" (recommended not to be less than 15 seconds) to prevent missing reports due to accidental respiratory pauses or brief cessations of movement.
    • Action: In areas with low and narrow installation heights (e.g., bathrooms, washing rooms, kitchens), ensure the detection distance is set appropriately (smaller than installation height) and adjust sensitivity.
  • Device not pairing with App:
    • Action: Ensure your ZigBee gateway is powered on and successfully added to the MOES App.
    • Action: Confirm the sensor is in pairing mode (blue indicator light flashing quickly). If not, long-press the reset button.
    • Action: Make sure the sensor is within close proximity and effective signal coverage of the ZigBee gateway.
    • Action: For WiFi models, ensure your phone is connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network.

9. Maintenance

The MOES Human Presence Sensor requires minimal maintenance.

  • Cleaning: Periodically wipe the sensor's surface with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
