4. Setup

Before using your Yieryi 3-in-1 EC Meter, ensure the battery is correctly installed and the protective cap is removed.

4.1 Battery Installation

The device requires one 3V CR2032 battery. Open the battery compartment (refer to Figure 2 for location), insert the battery with the correct polarity, and close the compartment securely.

4.2 Initial Preparation

  1. Remove the electrode protective cap from the bottom of the meter.
  2. Ensure the electrode is clean. If not, rinse it with distilled water and gently wipe it dry.

5. Operating Instructions

Follow these steps for accurate water quality measurements:

  1. Power On: Press the ON/OFF button to turn on the meter.
  2. Immerse the Meter: Gently immerse the electrode part of the meter into the solution you wish to test. Ensure the solution does not go above the immersion line (refer to Figure 2).
  3. Wait for Stable Reading: Allow the numerical display to stabilize. This usually takes a few seconds.
  4. Hold Reading: Once the display is steady, press the HOLD button to freeze the reading. You can then remove the meter from the solution to view the result more comfortably.
  5. Switch Modes (Optional): To switch between different display units (PPM & °C, us/cm & °C, ppm & °F, us/cm & °F), press the SHIFT button. The meter has 4 different modes. (Refer to Figure 5 for visual representation of modes).
  6. Power Off: After use, press the ON/OFF button to turn off the meter.

Understanding TDS Values

The TDS value indicates the total amount of dissolved solids in the water. Generally, a lower TDS value suggests purer water quality. However, a high TDS value does not automatically mean the water is harmful, as it can include beneficial minerals. Refer to the following general guidelines:

Chart illustrating TDS values and corresponding water quality levels
Figure 6: TDS value interpretation chart.
  • 0 ~ 9 ppm: Pure water
  • 10 ~ 60 ppm: Mountain spring water
  • 60 ~ 100 ppm: Purified water
  • 100 ~ 300 ppm: Tap water
  • More than 300 ppm: Polluted water

The meter can detect various impurities including ionic organic compounds (e.g., ammonium acetate, sodium sulfate), heavy metal ions (e.g., chromium, zinc, lead, copper), and soluble salts (e.g., calcium ion, magnesium ion).

6. Calibration

To ensure the accuracy of your EC meter, periodic calibration is recommended using a standard buffer solution.

6.1 EC Pen Calibration Method

  1. Prepare a standard EC buffer solution (e.g., 1413 us/cm or 12.88 mS/cm).
  2. Turn on the meter and immerse the electrode into the standard buffer solution.
  3. Long press the SHIFT key for 5 seconds. Release the button, and the displayed value will start to flash.
  4. Use the ON/OFF key to decrease the value or the HOLD key to increase the value until it matches the known value of your standard buffer solution.
  5. Press the SHIFT key again to confirm the calibration. The value will stop flashing, indicating that calibration is complete.

7. Maintenance

Proper maintenance will extend the lifespan and ensure the accuracy of your meter.

  • Cleaning the Electrode: After each use, rinse the electrode with distilled water and gently wipe it clean with a soft cloth or tissue.
  • Storage: Always replace the electrode protective cap after use. Store the meter in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat.
  • Battery Replacement: Replace the CR2032 battery when the display becomes dim or the meter fails to power on.
  • Avoid Immersion Beyond Line: The instrument is not waterproof. Do not immerse the meter beyond the immersion line to prevent short-circuiting the internal circuit board.
  • Professional Use: This is a professional instrument; use it according to these instructions to avoid damage.

8. Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Yieryi 3-in-1 EC Meter, consider the following:

  • Inaccurate Readings:
    - Ensure the electrode is clean. Residue can affect accuracy.
    - Calibrate the meter regularly using a fresh standard buffer solution. Incorrect calibration is a common cause of errors.
  • Meter Not Turning On:
    - Check the battery. Replace the 3V CR2032 battery if it's depleted or incorrectly installed.
  • Display Flashing During Calibration:
    - This is normal during the calibration process. Adjust the value using the ON/OFF and HOLD buttons, then press SHIFT to confirm.
  • No Reading or Erratic Readings:
    - Ensure the electrode is fully immersed in the solution, but not beyond the immersion line.
    - Check for any visible damage to the electrode.
  • Instrument Damage:
    - Avoid dropping the instrument or exposing it to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight.
    - Do not immerse the entire instrument in water, as it is not waterproof.

9. User Tips

  • For best accuracy, always use fresh calibration solutions and ensure they are at a stable temperature.
  • When taking multiple readings, rinse the electrode with distilled water between samples to prevent cross-contamination.
  • The HOLD function is particularly useful when testing solutions in hard-to-reach areas or when you need to record the reading manually.
  • Keep the protective cap on the electrode when not in use to prevent it from drying out or getting damaged.
